Feb 24 2024 - Housing Bylaw & North Central Revitalization

News from the Feb 14 2024 city council meeting: Bylaw changes inspired by the federal Housing Accelerator Fund have passed but there are concerns about how the housing-friendly measures will interact with the city's various housing-unfriendly neighbourhood plans. Then, council unanimously passes the North Cental Revitalization Initiative and it includes direction to establish a community-led land trust. Overall, a pretty exciting council meeting. We celebrate CJTR’s 2023 Radiothon by taking the Queen City Improvement Bureau out of the subbasement and recording our. meeting before a living-human audience in the Rebellion Taproom in the heart of the Warehouse District. We talk to some of the fine folks who came out to support community radio. On the mic with us, we have CJTR station manager Neil Adams along with QCIB listeners Lauren, Deron Staffen, local legend Jim Elliot, and CJTR board member Alan Hall. And in a special podcast bonus, we run a solo interview Paul had with ward 8 councillor Shanon Zachidniak. Oct 07 2022 - Catalyst Committee Interview With Councillor Hawkins

The Catalyst Committee was formed in July to develop a long-range plan for the siting and financing of a new downtown hockey arena to replace the Brandt Centre, a new aquatic centre to replace the Lawson, and a new, pro-quality baseball facility to replace the Red Sox’s home at Currie Field. It will also be considering the plans to rebuild the main branch of the library. The Catalyst Committee will be starting public consultations about all of these projects in mid-October so we cornered committee co-chair, Councillor Bob Hawkins, and peppered him with questions about what the Catalyst Committee has been doing.
