Affected by Altitude Episode 106: Like Being Attacked by a Giant Ape

This week Skyler and Evan discuss the disastrous start to the Colorado Rockies' season in which they were absolutely trounced in their Opening Day matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks 16-1 in the desert. Leading up to that, the Rockies made several roster decisions including adding Alan Trejo and Victor Vodnik to the Opening Day roster and designating prospect Warming Bernabel for assignment. The Rockies also announced the cable option for watching games this season. Meanwhile, owner Dick Monfort said some weird stuff in public again and we discuss how Rockies fans should temper their expectations for the 2024 campaign. Evan makes a vague promise. The caveat is that the players couldn't have appeared in more than two seasons with the team. In this new episode of Every Rockie Ever, Skyler and Dustin look back on a pair of center fielders from Rockies past. They marvel at the incredible 2003 season of Preston Wilson in the lone All-Star season of his career when he led the NL with 143 RBI. Unfortunately, injuries plagued the rest of his career after that but he still left a lasting impact on Rockies history during his brief. Every Rockie Ever #22: Don Baylor

In 1993, the newly born Colorado Rockies were about to begin their first season in MLB, One of the very first moves they had made in the 1992 offseason was the hiring on their first manager in team history: Don Baylor. For the first six years of their existence, Baylor captained the ship helping lay a foundation for Rockies baseball that has persevered over 30 years. Skyler and Dustin look back on not only his time as the manager, but his legacy as a player, a leader, and most importantly as a man. He was known as a giant among men, commanding respect everywhere he went. He was a baseball lifer until he passed away from cancer in 2017. The boys do their best to honor and remember one of the most important non-player Rockies in franchise history. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Every Rockie Ever #21: Mike Hampton & Other SP Free Agent Busts

An inability to draw top-tier free agents to the thin air of Coors Field has been a struggle for the Rockies for decades. However, in 2001 the team took a gamble and spent big on a pair of pitchers. Mike Hampton was signed to a 8-year deal while Denny Neagle signed a 5-year deal. Despite the effort to bolster the rotation, both pitchers failed to deliver on their respective contracts. Later in 2015, the team spent $5 million on Kyle Kendrick to eat innings, but it was one the worst pitching seasons in team history. These three pitchers are examples that the Rockies use to justify not spending big on starting pitching, opting for homegrown and bargain-bin talent. Dustin and Skyler try to look back on these signings and why they ended up being busts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Every Rockie Ever #20: The Super Bullpen

Following the 2017 season, Jeff Bridich and the Colorado Rockies decided to spend $106 million dollars on the bullpen, signing Jake McGee, Bryan Shaw, and Wade Davis. Unfortunately for the Rockies, none of the players finished out their contract as ineffectiveness, injury, and other circumstances forced the Rockies to cut ties with each of them. Skyler and Dustin do their best to reflect on the initial hopeful reactions to the signings and lament that none of the deals made the most sense with the money that was offered. McGee had solid years prior to the new contract, Davis led the NL in saves in 2018, and Shaw ate innings. The Super Bullpen was shortlived and one of the biggest blunders by the Rockies in recent memory. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Every Rockie Ever #19: The Boys Play Guess the Rockie

There are nearly 700 players to ever suit up for the Colorado Rockies, and unfortunately, not all of them garner a full episode on their own. To give them some recognition for better or for worse, Skyler and Dustin decided to play a round of Guess the Rockie. Dustin selected four hitters and Skyler picked four pitchers for the other to guess. The players were meant to be less notable players who didn't do much of anything of significance or mainly spent one season in Colorado. Learn more about your ad choices. Every Rockie Ever #18: Troy Tulowitzki

Since his debut in 2006, Troy Tulowitzki quickly cemented himself as one of the best players in MLB of his generation and helped revolutionize what a shortstop could be and do at the MLB level. For years he dazzled fans with his incredible defensive prowess and imposing presence in the batters box. The brothers reflect on his career from his rookie days to his peak years, to the sadness of his trade to the Blue Jays and his fractured relationship with the Rockies. Affected by Altitude Episode 92: All I want for Christmas is the Rockies to do something

Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the house, Skyler and Evan desperately hope that the Colorado Rockies do, well... anything at all this offseason. While the other NL West teams are making moves or figuring out a trajectory, the Rockies have been very quiet. Even the Kansas City Royals are showing free agents a vision and making moves to improve after their 106 loss campaign, but the Rockies seem to have no vision at all. Every Rockie Ever #17: The Rockies from Asia

In this new episode of Every Rockie Ever Skyler and Dustin look back on the Rockies' brief history with players from Asia. While it's well known the team is quite involved in Latin America, there has been very little dabbling with players from the Asia market. Still, throughout their history, they have acquired several pitchers over 30 years. Unfortunately, most of them haven't had very successful careers in purple. The Rockies have seen players from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan suit up in purple. Some have set records, some were flashes in the pan, but all played a small role on the mound.
