About

Our journey today will take us to one of the largest and most important underground cemeteries in Rome, The Catacombs of St. Callixtus. They originated in about the middle of the second century. There are more than sixty catacombs in the city of Rome composed of miles of underground tunnels in which thousands of tombs are found. Currently, only 5 of them are open to the public.

On today’s journey, you will:

  • Discover the ancient Christian symbols marked on many of the tombs
  • Find out who was buried there, including Popes, Saints, and Martyrs
  • Learn about two types of martyrdom, red and white
