“Who killed the Jacobs family?” is the question that has haunted Sacramento’s Upper Land Park neighborhood for thirty-three years. The Jacobs were a typical American family, until one January morning in 1991, when they were brutally slain in the one place they should have been the safest– their home. Dozens of detectives have tried to crack the case, to untangle the rumors and speculation, but justice has yet to be served. Their names were Mick, Marcy, and Jennifer Jacobs, and this is their story. According to the National Institute of Justice, the majority of missing person cases are solved and the majority of the cases solved bring victims back alive. In 2012, for example, around 659,000 of the 661,000 missing persons cases reported that year were resolved by the end of the year. But what happens when cases aren’t solved within a year? Or five years? Ten years? What happens when a case has been cold for 45 years? Today we are discussing one such case. It is the case of a young man, the family who maintained that he would come home, and a niece who decided to fight for a resolution. His name is Brian Vargo. This is his story. We were privileged in being able to speak with Brian’s niece Amanda, the daughter of one of Brian’s older brothers, for this episode. Although Amanda never met her uncle, she was able to tell us about his upbringing and personality based on her own research. She was a young and brilliant undergrad attending one of the country’s top Ivy League schools. She was loved by all who knew her. She spoke four languages and tutored inner city kids. Then one night she was murdered walking across campus. Brutally stabbed 17 times. Left to die on the side of the road. That was December 4, 1998. 25 years later, her murder is still unsolved. In August of 2000, 23-year-old Welsh backpacker Kirsty Jones was just two months into the year-long trip of a lifetime: backpacking through Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. After having dinner with new friends, Kirsty did some shopping at a local bazaar, then made the short walk back to the guest house she was staying at in Chiang Mai in the country of Thailand. The next afternoon, Kirsty was found dead inside of her room, strangled and sexually assaulted. Despite DNA being found at the scene, Thai police allowed the room to be contaminated over and over, sinking the investigation before it even started. 23 years later, Kirsty will never have justice in the court system. On a spring evening in 2016, Bianca Carrasco disappeared without a trace from near her San Antonio home after an argument with her husband. She had recently asked for a divorce, and there was a verbal altercation after they had put their children to bed. Yolanda Bindics disappeared after a routine shift at work on August 10, 2004. Two years later her skeletal remains were found in a wooden area over two dozen miles from where she was last seen. The news coverage on her case has been minimal and at times inaccurate. The police department’s communication and cooperation with her family was rocky. On June 27, 1995, 27 year old Jodi Huisentruit was supposed to be at the news station at 3:00am. When Jodi wasn’t there by 4:00am, the producer called Jodi and woke her up. Jodi said she overslept and would be in ASAP. When Jodi didn’t show up for the 6:00 newscast, the producer filled in for the hour show. When the newscast was over, the producer asked a coworker to call the police to do a welfare check. When police arrived at Jodi’s apartment complex, they saw signs of a struggle in the parking lot - it was pretty obvious that Jodi had been abducted. Police have never named any suspects or made any arrests in Jodi’s case. Her body has never been found, although she was declared legally dead in 2001. This is her story. In the fall of 2019 Tiffany Booth was starting anew. She’d moved states, had a job that she enjoyed and was about to meet a man who she thought she could spend the rest of her life with. But that man wouldn’t change her life for the better, instead, he would end it. The investigation that followed would be led in part by her family who, through their large network, was able to discover crucial leads in the case. Juan Leon Laureles, who went by Leon, was born on January 3rd of 1966. Leon’s case follows a long line of Texas crimes that have received very little media and police attention due to prejudice.
