About

What do you do?
Western Studios, Leeds presents Working Hours: a podcast series surveying the people of Leeds on their thoughts and feelings on the topic of work. I want to talk to my city about work. Why do we do it? Do we like it? What could we do differently? What will we? How does work change and how does it change us?
Leeds, the largest city in the largest county on the UK mainland, is a former imperial textile centre and is now a major UK financial centre. This series will document the city’s experiences through Lockdown, Brexit, creeping technological unemployment, new and continuing resource wars, the ongoing dismantling of the welfare state and our accelerating ecological emergency.
If you are in Leeds or from Leeds then help me to reach my target of interviewing 1000 Loiners over the 2020s. Let me ask you, what do you do?

Work is Sharing Knowledge

Tracey Earl recorded on 30/01/2024 Tracey Earl along with her husband Ian, runs We Are In Business a business networking group. We Are In Business helps solopreneurs and small and start-up business owners to grow their networks, gain new skills and build confidence in themselves and their business. After running their own businesses for many years, Ian and Tracey knew being a business owner can be a lonely place a lot of the time. People often start their business because they are good at what they do, but running a business requires skills you might not have, might not want or might not be able to acquire. So, they co-created We Are In Business, a networking and business support community for SMEs and start-ups in Leeds. We Are In Business give Leeds business owners a vital support network around themselves early on where they can exchange knowledge and experiences around the different aspects of running a business. We Are In Business is a community that supports, collaborates and advocates for each other, both in their online and face to face networking events. Tracey say that surrounding yourself with a supportive network of business owners is the best way to grow and develop your business. https://www.weareinbusiness.co.uk/

Work is Cone-ecting Yorkshire

Keith Madeley recorded on 06/11/2023 Keith Madeley (AKA Mr Yorkshire (you’ll find out why in the interview)) left Grammar School at 16 and joined British Rail as a Clerk in Bradford. 2 years later Keith was moving to London for a promotion and then going on to pass all the exams to become British Rail’s youngest ever Station Manager at 21 years of age. Keith cites this as a great grounding for his future. Leaving London at 25, Keith moved back to Bradford and initially worked as PR Manager at a Computer Software company before being promoted to General manager after 3 months and then becoming a Director of a couple of their subsidiaries. At 28 Keith joined with a friend to form an Independent Financial Advisory business which they ran together for 30 years. Keith was always looking at developing new products and building their business with PR. In 2004 they sold their business on to a major company. Since that sale, Keith has been Chairman and/or Non Exec Director of several companies and Charities/Non-profits. Keith loves to help Yorkshire companies lift their profile and he is a member of the Board of the Yorkshire Asian Business Association, known locally as YABA. This role helps Keith on his personal agenda of promoting diversity and inclusivity in the area. These days though Keith’s main focus is marketing his wife’s Children’s Educational book series, called Cones. Yep, that’s right. The books are about those ubiquitous orange warning/safety cones everyone has seen. Keith has secured sponsorship for every one of the Cones books so far each with a major company. With 18 Cones books now published, another 7 in different stages and more in negotiations, the Cones series is going from strength to strength. Work is off The Wall

Chris Joy recorded on 25/10/2023 Chris Joy is a Project Lead at a construction and building management company but, that doesn’t tell you anything about his work or even his many previous roles. Chris has done many 'off the wall' roles, some of which we cover in this interview. He didn’t send me any blurb for this intro but, you don’t need any. He’s not selling you anything. This is one of those all over the place rabbling ones. We’re mostly on theme though. Anyway we wiz through the questions at the beginning and then it turns into a rambling pub chat. Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

Work is Fantastic

RJ Barker recorded on 05/09/2023 RJ Barker is a critically acclaimed and award-winning author of fantasy fiction. He won the 2020 British Fantasy Society (BFS) Robert Holdstock award for Best Novel for his fourth novel, The Bone Ships. His debut trilogy The Wounded Kingdom (Age of Assassins, Blood of Assassins and King of Assassins) was nominated for the David Gemmel Award, the Kitschie Golden Tentacle, The Compton Crook and the BFS Best Debut and Best Novel awards. It was called ‘Thoroughly entertaining and constantly impressive’ by the Fantasy Hive, ‘One of the best fantasy series you will ever read’ by the BFS, and ‘A singular sensational new voice in epic fantasy’ by Kings of the Wyld author Nicholas Eames. He followed this with the award-winning Tide Child Trilogy: The Bone Ships, Call of the Bone Ships and The Bone Ships Wake. These books have been hailed as “One of the most interesting and original fantasy worlds I’ve seen in years” by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and “Brilliant” by Robin Hobb, alongside rave reviews in Starburst, SFX, and a starred review in Bookslist: ‘A unique and memorable world – harsh and brutal and full of fully realized, powerful female characters. Barker has managed to craft a story inspired by Moby Dick, Game of Thrones, and pirate lore, and readers will be drawn in and fascinated.’ RJ lives in Leeds with his wife, son and a collection of questionable taxidermy, odd art, scary music and more books than they have room for. He grew up reading whatever he could get his hands on, and has always been 'that one with the book in his pocket'. Having played in rock bands before deciding he was a rubbish musician, RJ returned to his first love, fiction. https://www.rjbarker.com/

Work is Magical

Dr Angela Puca recorded on 03/03/23 Dr Angela Puca joined Leeds Trinity University in 2016 and has lectured there and at other universities on Philosophy and Religious Studies. Angela’s degrees are in Philosophy, focusing on Asian Philosophies. During her academic formation, she studied Latin, ancient Greek, Sanskrit, and Tibetan (classical and modern) to translate primary sources of interest from different philosophical and religious traditions. During her master’s degree, she expanded her knowledge in the field of Religious Studies, especially Buddhism and the Indian and Tibetan religions, at the University of Naples, Italy. Afterwards, her research moved towards Paganism, shamanism, and their contemporary manifestations across the Italian peninsula. The University of Leeds awarded her a PhD in Anthropology of Religion in 2020 as a result of her research on “Indigenous and Trans-cultural Shamanism in Italy”. Author of several peer-reviewed publications, a forthcoming monograph on Italian shamanism and folk witchcraft to be published with Brill and co-editor of the forthcoming ‘Pagan religions in five minutes’ for Equinox, she hopes to bridge the gap between academia and the communities of magic practitioners by delivering related scholarly content on her YouTube Channel, TikTok and other social media via her project called ‘Angela’s Symposium’.
