We’ll explore the intricate details of Tarkovsky's work, his refusal to adhere to genre conventions and the haunting beauty found in unexpected locations. #138 - The Cinedicate Holiday Party (Part 1) - Silent Night (2023) - The Importance of Dialogue, Visual Storytelling, and John Woo's Return to Filmmaking

Silent Night is a movie that has sparked mixed reactions from viewers. Directed by renowned filmmaker John Woo, it was chosen for review at a holiday party due to its unique premise of being a silent action film. However, some viewers, particularly fans of Woo's previous work, felt that the absence of dialogue hindered their engagement with the story and characters. While a movie without dialogue can be an intriguing experiment, it may not always fully satisfy the viewers' desire for a complete narrative. Dialogue complements visual storytelling by adding layers of complexity and depth to the storytelling. It allows for conversations and exchanges that can reveal characters' intentions, emotions, and conflicts in a more direct and relatable way. This raises the question of the importance of dialogue in movies and the power of visual storytelling. Additionally, the use of Christmas as a framing device in Silent Night has sparked debate, with some questioning its significance to the overall plot. This episode will explore these aspects of the film, as well as delve into John Woo's filmography, the portrayal of complex characters, and the missed opportunities in portraying villains. #137 - The Nightmare Before Christmas - Self-Discovery, Identity, and Isolation in Tim Burton's Timeless Classic

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic that has captured the hearts of viewers of all ages. For many, like Carla, it has been a part of their lives since childhood. With its release in 1993, this claymation masterpiece added a new dimension to the world of animation. The stop motion technique used in this film made it feel tactile and real, setting it apart from the traditional hand-drawn Disney movies. This unique presentation still holds up today, making it a timeless experience. With Halloween kicking off the festive season, followed by Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's, 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this joyful and celebratory time of the year. It serves as a bridge between Halloween and Christmas, making it an ideal movie choice throughout the months of September, October, November, and December. While it may have initially been associated more with Halloween, due to its aesthetic and its popular viewing during that time, it certainly invokes Christmas vibes as well. In fact, if you were to watch it before Christmas, it would still feel fitting. Other holiday horror stories, such as 'Gremlins', also exist, further solidifying the idea that 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' is a delightful blend of both Halloween and Christmas, and a perfect treat for the festive season. #136 - Thanksgiving (2023) - A Faux Trailer that Excites, but a Film that Falls Short

Thanksgiving, a once highly anticipated horror film, generated immense excitement through its captivating and gruesome trailer in Tarantino & Rodriguez's Grindhouse . However, as viewers flocked to the theaters, they were met with a lackluster film that failed to live up to the promises of its trailer. This podcast explores the disappointment and missed opportunities of Thanksgiving, delving into the reasons behind its downfall. From the lack of violence to the missed chance for campy hilarity, join us as we unravel the discrepancy between the highly anticipated trailer and the lackluster reality of Thanksgiving by Eli Roth. The trailer for "Thanksgiving" had a perfect balance of campiness and humor that had viewers excited for what was to come. Lines like "all will be carved" and the turkey puppet scene were both horrifying and funny at the same time. But unfortunately, the movie didn't fully embrace this campy route. Perhaps the director, in his serious directorial approach, may have felt that camp wasn't something he wanted to pursue anymore. But as a viewer, I can't help but feel that the film missed an opportunity to fully embrace its comedic potential. #135 - The Muppet Christmas Carol - Bringing Humor and Music to a Timeless Classic

For many of us, The Muppets hold a special place in our hearts. From The Muppet Show to the classic films, they have brought joy and laughter to countless households. Heather, one of the hosts of WSTR, shares her own experience growing up with The Muppets. Being the youngest in her family, Heather was exposed to movies that were perhaps a little too mature for her age. But that didn't stop her from falling in love with The Muppets. The Muppets Christmas Carol has always stood out in the sea of Christmas Carol adaptations. As Heather explains, many versions struggled with the limitations of technology and budget, finding it challenging to bring the story's supernatural elements to life. However, The Muppets' Christmas Carol defied expectations. Not only did it capture the essence of the classic Christmas tale, but it also pushed the boundaries with its high production value. The visuals and special effects were impressive, creating an atmosphere that wasn't just merry and bright, but also a little spooky. And let's not forget about the performances. Michael Caine, who played the leading role, approached the film with utmost seriousness, despite the presence of singing and dancing Muppets. This balance between silliness and seriousness is what makes The Muppets Christmas Carol a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. #134 - Rosemary's Baby (1968) - The Proto Slow Burn and Influence For Modern Horror

At first glance, 'Rosemary's Baby' may appear tame in comparison to contemporary horror films. However, beneath its seemingly ordinary scenes lies an unsettling sense of unease that is expertly crafted through imaginative imagery and an element of uncertainty. It can be seen as a precursor to the slow burn sub-genre that prevails in modern horror, showcasing its structural influence on later movies like 'Hereditary.' This film proves that horror doesn't always require gore and jump scares to be effective; it is the underlying tension and psychological manipulation that make it truly chilling. Beyond its artistic merits, 'Rosemary's Baby' offers a unique perspective on the horror of being a pregnant woman in the 1960s. Set in New York City during a time of social and political upheaval, the film explores themes of autonomy and control over one's own body. As we follow Rosemary's journey through her pregnancy, we witness the manipulation and lack of agency she experiences at the hands of those around her. This depiction serves as a powerful reflection of the societal pressures and expectations faced by women during that era. Join us as we unravel the influence of 'Rosemary's Baby' on the horror genre. Whether you're a seasoned horror enthusiast or simply intrigued by cultural influences, this podcast will provide you with a fresh perspective on a classic that continues to shape the genre to this day. #133 - Suspiria (2018) - Femininity and Harnessing Dance as a Form of Magic

The film 'Suspiria' has captivated audiences for decades, and in 2018, director Luca Guadagnino took on the challenge of remaking Dario Argento's cult classic. But how does the remake compare to the original? In this podcast, we delve into the similarities, differences, and critical opinions surrounding these two films. From the tone and aesthetics to the plot twists and feminist themes, we explore what worked and what missed the mark in both versions of 'Suspiria.' Whether you're a fan of the original or curious about the remake, join us as we dissect this thrilling and controversial franchise. Dancing is more than just movement and rhythm. In the movie Suspiria, we see how dance can be portrayed as a form of magic. When Suzy, the newbie in the dance group, showcases her skills, Madame Blanc, the leader of the coven, sees her potential. There seems to be a spell or essence of Suspiria bestowed upon her, as her hands and feet glow during the dance. It's fascinating to see how the filmmakers have researched and created a magic system centered around dance. Your body, your movements, become the source of your magic. The scene is intense and powerful, showcasing the structure and rawness of their magic. The realism portrayed in the dance scenes is both unsettling and captivating. Unlike the stylized gore in the original Suspiria, we are presented with contorted bodies and gruesome movements that feel disturbingly real. The filmmakers intended to make it seem visceral and authentic, and they succeeded. The scene where Dakota Johnson's character Suzy dances while Olga's body is destroyed is unforgettable. It leaves a strong impact and, for some, may be hard to watch. The mixture of admiration for the artistry and discomfort adds to the overall experience of the movie. Whether you love or hate it, you can't deny the power of the dance scenes in the Suspiria remake. ---------- Connect with Ali on X https://x.com/ilikejuiceboxes. ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/cinedicate Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! #132 - RUB (2023) - Giving a Voice to the Marginalized and a Portrait of Instability

In the world of filmmaking, there are stories that touch us on a surface level, and then there are those that dive deep into the complexities of the human experience. 'Rub' falls into the latter category, delving into the lives of outcasts and addressing misconceptions surrounding the term 'incel.' This film takes a unique and bold approach to storytelling, challenging the audience's expectations and leaving a lasting impact. The character of Neil, portrayed by the talented Micah, serves as an unlikely hero, representing the struggles many individuals face in finding love and friendship. Viewers are surprised by Neil's character development, expecting him to become a violent menace. Instead, his journey takes a different route as he navigates his insecurities and loneliness, ultimately finding love amidst the struggles of two outcasts. But 'Rub' doesn't stop at exploring the lives of outcasts. It bravely tackles the harsh reality of human trafficking and sex work, shedding light on the experiences of women trapped in this dangerous world. Through the character of Perla, the film creates awareness and gives a voice to those who have suffered in similar situations. It's a powerful narrative that challenges societal norms and raises important questions. One of the standout elements of 'Rub' is its unconventional and bold ending. This film doesn't adhere to the typical Hollywood formula; instead, it takes risks and defies expectations. The ending leaves audiences thinking and reflecting long after the credits roll, much like A24's Uncut Gems. Both films share a common theme of challenging traditional storytelling and making an impact that lingers. Creating ambiguity and encouraging audience interpretation was a deliberate intention of the filmmaker behind 'Rub.' By allowing viewers to come up with their own meanings and interpretations, the film sparks deeper engagement and discussion. It's a refreshing departure from spoon-feeding the audience and invites them to become active participants in the viewing experience. From the success and recognition in the festival circuit to the dedication and performances of its cast and crew, 'Rub' has made a mark in the world of cinema. Its ability to tackle heavy subject matter in a subtle yet impactful way resonates with audiences, distinguishing it as a standout film. If you're seeking a thought-provoking and emotionally charged movie that defies expectations, 'Rub' is a must-watch. ---------- Watch RUB now on Amazon Prime https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0C9WBSZ9S/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_r. #131 - Predator (1987) - Aliens, The Cold War, and Challenging Masculinity

On this episode of The Cinedicate, we are air dropped into one of the most beloved action movies of all time - Predator. Join us as we not only talk about the legacy of this film, but also how it challenges the idea of masculinity, explores the fear of an invisible enemy during the Cold War, and the powerful symbolism behind this sci-fi thriller. So grab some popcorn and get ready for a thrilling journey into the heart of this cinematic masterpiece. Predator subverts the traditional theme of masculinity in a subtle yet powerful way. One surprising fact is that originally, they had cast Van Damme to play the Predator. However, they realized that his smaller stature didn't fit the imagery they wanted for domineering image of The Predator. Instead, they went with Kevin Michael Hall, who brought a towering presence to the role. When standing over Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, the Predator reduces Arnold Schwarzenegger to just a man, despite his larger-than-life status. This dramatic contrast emphasizes the superior strength and dominance of the Predator, making the threat feel more believable. As the story unfolds, the characters are stripped of their weapons, making them vulnerable to the Predator's hunt. This is most evident when Carl Weathers' character engages in a face-off with the alien. Despite his invincible appearance, the Predator effortlessly removes Carl's arm with just one shot. This scene drives home the message that muscles and weapons mean nothing to the Predator. The vulnerability of the characters highlights the power and superiority of the predator, making this movie truly special. ---------- Listen to Aaron and Todd on their podcast, WSTR: Galactic Public Access https://open.spotify.com/show/5UZiFLeAu1jRKNZMYEhHHh ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/cinedicate Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! #130 - Idiocracy - The Cyclical Nature of Satire and Its Relevance Today

In a future where corporations reign supreme, "Idiocracy" paints a terrifying picture of what could happen if society devolves into mindless consumerism. In this world, Taco Bell has its own bank and supermarket, while Costco is transformed into a university. However, perhaps the most alarming aspect is the extreme dumbing down of the population. People have become so unintelligent that they use ropes to hold up falling buildings, and the average person speaks in a combination of hillbilly and valley girl accents. It's a bleak look at a future where intelligence and critical thinking have been abandoned in favor of mindless entertainment consumption. While "Idiocracy" definitely has its moments, it's fair to say that it didn't quite reach the same level of success as Mike Judge's previous hit, "Office Space." The beginning of the film is strong, setting a hilarious and satirical tone, but as the story progresses, it loses some of its comedic impact. Some argue that the humor hasn't aged well, as it relies heavily on outdated stereotypes and offensive language. It's a shame, considering how relatable and well-executed "Office Space" was. Perhaps "Idiocracy" can be seen as a sophomore slump for Judge... ---------- Listen to Hector on his podcast, ReShoot: An Amateur's Guide to Gooder Film https://open.spotify.com/show/7j5f7ov3csHUiqTFXyhNZ2?si=7253e1b7a68045a1 ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/cinedicate Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! #128 - Cloud Atlas - An Endless Dance Throughout Time and Space

In the movie 'Cloud Atlas,' there are six interweaving stories that span from the 1800s to a far post-apocalyptic future. Each story takes place in a different time period and setting, but they all follow the same structure. From an enslaved man in the 1800s who struggles for freedom to a futuristic world where primitive tribesmen fight for survival, the common theme of breaking free runs through each narrative. Throughout the movie, we see characters trying to break free in various ways. In the first story, the Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing, the protagonist finds himself caught in a moral conundrum and eventually becomes an abolitionist, advocating for freedom. This theme is repeated in every story as characters strive to be free or reveal the truth. For example, in the story of Frobisher, his pursuit of freedom ends tragically with suicide, highlighting the desperation some face in their struggle for liberation. Overall, 'Cloud Atlas' explores the human soul's desire for freedom, emphasizing the inner fire that exists in each individual. While the characters may be living different lives in different times, they are all driven by the same longing for freedom. This theme, coupled with the notion of reincarnation, adds depth to the movie and prompts viewers to reflect on why history seems to repeat itself. By highlighting the pursuit of freedom and the cycle of mistakes, 'Cloud Atlas' offers a thought-provoking exploration of the human experience. ---------- 'Cloud Atlas' is a thought-provoking film that challenges our understanding of reality and the nature of our existence. The Wachowskis' directing style and the film's exploration of timeless themes keep viewers engaged and captivated. This idea of the true American Dream extends beyond humans to all living organisms. From bacteria to humans, the universal dream is to live a life with less stress and struggle. REVISITED - The Dark Tower (2017) - The Need for Respecting Source Material and The Right Medium for a Story

With streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime have gained popularity, audiences have become accustomed to consuming content in a serialized format. In order to maintain continuity with the original book series, movie adaptations must find a way to capture the essence of the story while appealing to this new trend of binge-watching. Whether it's through the release of a limited series or a series of films released in quick succession, maintaining continuity in book-to-movie adaptations is crucial. Another challenge lies in the translation of written language to visual storytelling. Books often provide detailed descriptions and inner thoughts of characters, but movies rely primarily on visual and auditory cues to convey the story. Directors and screenwriters must find creative ways to convey a character's emotions, motivations, and relationships without relying solely on dialogue or voiceover narration. This requires a deep understanding of the source material and the ability to make strategic adaptations without sacrificing the heart of the story. Ultimately, the goal of a book-to-movie adaptation is to bring the story to a wider audience while staying true to the original source material. It's a delicate balance that requires careful consideration and a deep respect for the story and its fans. With the right approach and a dedication to maintaining continuity, book-to-movie adaptations can be successful and beloved by both die-hard fans and new audiences alike. ---------- What stands out about The Dark Tower by Stephen King is the level of detail and intricate storytelling that sets the series apart from many modern books. So, when a beloved book series like The Dark Tower is adapted into a movie, fans often hold their breath, hoping that the film will do justice to their favorite characters and storylines. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In the case of the Dark Tower series, the movie adaptation fails to capture the essence of the books. ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/cinedicate Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! As viewers, we are often drawn to the captivating allure of spectacle, whether it's in movies, real-life events, or even on social media. REVISITED - Jordan Peele's Filmography - Inside The Mind of a Horror Icon

In Jordan Peele's filmography, from "Get Out" to "Candyman," he skillfully weaves horror, social commentary, and symbolism to create compelling narratives. "Get Out" tackles racial tensions, commenting on cultural appropriation and prejudice, while using the sunken place as a metaphor for silenced voices. In "Us," Peele explores duality and identity, using doppelgängers to represent our hidden, darker aspects. The film delves into societal divisions and the idea of being our own worst enemies. Peele's directorial style consistently employs symbolism to provoke deep introspection about contemporary issues. With "Candyman" (produced by Peele), the exploration of racial trauma through the urban legend bridges the past and present, highlighting the cyclical nature of violence and oppression. The film serves as a reminder of the haunting impact of historical injustices on modern society. Through his films, Peele demonstrates his ability to blend horror with thought-provoking social commentary, leaving audiences engaged and reflective long after the screen fades to black. ---------- Listen to Aaron on his podcast, WSTR: Galactic Public Access https://open.spotify.com/show/5UZiFLeAu1jRKNZMYEhHHh ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/cinedicate Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms! REVISITED - Blade Runner (1982 / 2017) - Playing God and the Paradox of Human Desires

In the sci-fi classic Blade Runner, the dystopian setting serves as a backdrop to explore social commentary on the mistreatment of the poor and the ethical dilemmas surrounding replicants. This thought-provoking film raises questions about power, inequality, and the definition of humanity. Additionally, the symbolism of the unicorn and the use of origami add layers of mystery and intrigue. In Blade Runner 2049, the act of creation and its connection to humanity are highlighted, mirroring the process of filmmaking itself. And finally, in the ambiguity of human consciousness and implanted memories, the boundaries between being human and being a replicant are blurred. This podcast delves into these fascinating aspects of Blade Runner and the impact they have on the film's narrative and themes. Blade Runner takes place in a dystopian future where Los Angeles has been heavily gentrified and fused with Japanese and Chinese cultures. This results in a nightmarish cityscape filled with rain, garbage, and constant dirtiness. The wealthy class of people have emigrated to the moon, leaving the poor to suffer on Earth. There is a clear social commentary on the mistreatment of the poor by the wealthy elite. This setting creates a somber and dark atmosphere that perfectly matches the themes of the film. It is a stark reminder of the potential consequences of societal inequality and environmental degradation. REVISITED - Blood Machines - Unveiling the Cosmic Universe of Carpenter Brut

Carpenter Brut, recognized for his hardcore synth wave music, has garnered a devoted following in the realms of EDM and cyberpunk. Whether encountered on platforms like SoundCloud or through random YouTube compilations, fans have been captivated by his unique compositions. In particular, his track 'Turbo Killer' served as a gateway into the captivating world of Carpenter Brut. The visuals and narrative of the 'Turbo Killer' music video inspired the creation of the cosmic opera 'Blood Machines,' a visually intoxicating experience that pushes the boundaries of visual effects and artistry. However, while the film impresses with its visuals, it falls short in developing a compelling narrative. This podcast dives deep into the importance of visual storytelling in movies and examines the highlights and missed opportunities of 'Blood Machines.' Join us as we explore the cosmic universe crafted by Carpenter Brut and its impact on the world of music and filmmaking. Visual storytelling is an essential element in movies that can greatly impact the viewer's experience. While some may argue that a film's focus should be on the writing and dialogue, there is something captivating about being able to tell a story through visuals. Even if the script may be lacking in certain areas, the use of imagery can evoke emotions and convey themes in a unique way. Instead of relying solely on dialogue to convey a message, visual storytelling allows the audience to interpret and connect with the story on a deeper level. REVISITED - Hellraiser (1987/2022) - Exploring the Dark and Twisted World of Pinhead and the Cenobites

This week we take a look back at the Hellraiser roundtable discussion where we compare the 1987 original Hellraiser and the 2022 remake, highlighting their respective storylines and themes. Hellraiser 1987 takes us on a twisted love story intertwined with supernatural elements, while Hellraiser 2022 immerses us in a dark and mysterious contemporary party. Both versions offer their own take on Pinhead and the Cenobites, capturing the essence of the Hellraiser story. In the 1980s, Pinhead was a British dude with pins in his head. While his appearance was certainly unique, his character didn't strike fear into my heart. Maybe it was the voice that just sounded too masculine and normal. It lacked that eerie distortion that I expect from a horror character. Plus, let's be honest, I've known people who look like that guy in real life. But fast forward to the modern day Pinhead, and it's a whole different story. The design is more horror chic, and it genuinely terrifies me. The new Pinhead looks alien, otherworldly. I appreciate that they moved away from the fully BDSM style and embraced a more androgynous aesthetic. In this new portrayal, Pinhead is genuinely creepy as fuck, and that's exactly what I want from this character. It's a refreshing take and a departure from the original, but in a good way. Whether you're a long-time fan of Hellraiser or new to the franchise, our podcast offers a comprehensive exploration of the original and remake, Pinhead's character evolution, and the importance of trans representation in film and television. #125 - The Hobbit Trilogy - A Critical Comparison Against The Lord of the Rings

Lord of the Rings is a cinematic masterpiece that has captured the hearts of millions of movie-goers and book lovers alike. The film has been adapted from the iconic novel of the same name, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. The film and book series depict an epic battle of good versus evil set in a fictional world known as Middle Earth. But what makes Lord of the Rings stand out from other fantasy films or books is the way it makes you believe that Middle Earth is a real place—a place that exists outside of the story being told. A world that is more than just the setting for the characters' adventures. The decision to split The Hobbit into three films feels like it was made solely for monetary gain rather than to serve the narrative. Other franchises like Harry Potter and Twilight did the same thing, but it doesn't work for The Hobbit. The result is that the entire product suffers when it could have worked just as well as a single film. Fans of the book were disappointed to see non-existent characters making appearances in the trilogy, and those who hadn't read the book found the plotlines convoluted and confusing. In short, the decision to make three movies out of The Hobbit was a mistake. ---------- Listen to Carla on her podcast, WSTR: Galactic Public Access https://open.spotify.com/show/5UZiFLeAu1jRKNZMYEhHHh ---------- Support The Cinedicate on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/cinedicate Connect with The Cinedicate on these social platforms!
