The Trans Sporter Room Ep148 -- REWIND: Dr. Jaimie Veale on Sensationalism, Facts and The Press

This week in theconversation.com, a thought-provoking article called "Polarising, sensational media coverage of transgender athletes should end – our research shows a way forward" was front and center, discussing how the press covers the issue inclusion, where they get it wrong and how they can do better. One of the authors of the scholarly examination is Dr. Jaimie Veale, Senior Lecturer in Psychology; Director, Transgender Health Research Lab, University of Waikato, New Zealand Dr. Veale has been outspoken in the past, especially as fellow Kiwi Laurel Hubbard was making her run to the Tokyo Olympics. In the weeks leading up to last year's Summer Olympics, Veale was beamed up to for a deep dive with our house Karleigh Webb on the Hubbard situation, and the greater of issue of how it was covered and how it affected trans communities. This week's podcast will be a rewind of that interview, provided additional context to the article she co-wrote and bringing a sharp focus into what has been a predominant discussion that has only grown alongside the regulatory and legal actions among sporting governing bodies and society. The Trans Sporter Room Ep147 -- Sasha Acheson: Ally In The Scrum

The Trans Sporter Room Ep145 --Bethany Cyrtmus and a phoenix In Austin

Imagine a team who is a hit on the field with a coach who has been there and won that, a group of players gelling together with an unbeaten record and the cup in sight. Imagine that same team undercut by an owner who talks about winning on the field, but working against the goal by how they are running the club. Sounds like a sports movie script? It played out this past season with Austin Elite FC in United Women's Soccer. The team was in the middle of the season with an unbeaten team and was a national title contender when the team's owner fired the head coach without warning or reason. Further investigation saw a horror show of bad business decisions, abuse, and players and coaches paid late when they are paid at all. Those actions led to a player boycott, a league investigation, a season ending abruptly and a team adrift. In the scrum of it all is Bethany Cyrtmus, a team member will versed in the challenge of change. She always loved sports, especially the beautiful game. Her love led her to take sabbatical from a job in finance to take a stab at playing soccer professionally. it was also at the same time she was pursuing her transition. She held her own in a tryout in the NWSL which led to playing overseas in Spain and ended up at Austin Elite where now she is leading a charge to from the rubble of the past, and could end up as part of an ownership group. Karleigh Webb sat down with a trans pioneer in the making to talk about rebuilding, rebranding, rebirth, rise -- and lengths she'd go for the Legend of Zelda Also this week: BREAKING NEWS: Federal judge stiff-arms Indiana trans-student athlete ban England's Rugby Football Union to vote on trans participation this week Past Guest Update: The Pronouns nail a goal down Learn more about your ad choices. The Trans Sporter Room Ep146 -- Jacqueline Cook opens minds as she opens holes in the WFA

Across the National Football League, training camps will be opening this week. The college game will also follow suit. America's 100-yard obsession is back again -- at least for the fellas Women's gridiron football ended their season last week as the nation's oldest and largest women's league held their championship and all-star games last week. Among those who earn All-Star status is Pittsburgh Passion guard Jacqueline Cook, and she did it in her rookie year. And her return to football began with the disappointment of being told she couldn't play on a different team and a different sport because she is a trans woman. That wasn't a problem in the inclusive WFA, and each game week she make a 2-hour trek from her home in Canton, Ohio (the Hall Of Fame City) to Pittsburgh (The Steel City) and open holes for the Passion, and perhaps open minds as well. Karleigh Webb sat down with Cook to talk about a winning first season, being trans between the white lines, and the joys of 20-sided dice. The Trans Sporter Room Ep144 -- Verity Smith and Ness Murby

This week's Trans Sporter Room has our Karleigh Webb sitting down with two blokes who are getting things done in the sporting arena and making the case for inclusion. Verity Smith: The wheelchair rugby ace is currently a frontline player for the Leeds Rhinos in the Wheelchair Super League in the UK. The Rhinos are at the top of the table, and closing in on all the trophies this season. When not helping the Rhinos add to the trophy case, Smith is pushing for greater inclusion in sport for trans youth as the Director for Sports and Inclusion for Mermaids.UK. He's also been a voice within the halls of sporting governing bodies in making the case against the recent slate of restrictive actions against transgender people competing in sport. Ness Murby: The Canadian Paralympian has had a busy last two years. In 2020, Murby came out as unapologetically trans and queer and mounted a drive toward being the first out trans Paralympian. His bid fell just short, but his resolve has only grown. The goal is now Paris in 2024, and the chance to step on the biggest stage in adaptive sport competing in his truth. But the medals, records, and the title of champion pale compared to the titles he treasures most: Husband and Dad. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Trans Sporter Room SPECIAL REPORT: The Worldwide Ban of 2022

In March the IOC's much-discussed Framework for Fairness went into effect. Within the last 5 days, the world governing bodies for cycling and swimming essentially ignored those guidelines. FINA's new guideline is harsh. A lowered testosterone limit, and a mandate that a potential competitor would have to transition by age 12 to be eligible to take a chance at a world or Olympic Championships. Karleigh Webb host and extended Trans Sporter Room filled with news, views and analysis along with a group of guests who speak to the multi-sided facets of the discussion. Alejandra Caraballo is a lawyer specializing in trans right and the Clinical Instructor at the Harvard University Law School. She'll touch on the legal aspect and will look at the issue from the eyes of her experience as a competitive swimmer. Shauna Adkisson is a super sports fan, a queer sports leader in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, and she's also a special correspondent to the Trans Sporter Room. She'll have the fan perspective. Dr. Juniper Simonis is a champion on their wheels and in the laboratory. They hold a Ph.D. in ecology and a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology, the founder of their own research firm. They are also an activist/researcher who is studying chemical weapons, and they are a 4-time World Flat Track Derby Association World Champ. She's one part of a science and sport roundtable alongside Erica Smith. Already published and accomplished as a medical ethicist, philosopher and has her sights on medical school. She is also a two-sport athlete for Sweet Briar (Va.) College. She is the other half the roundtable, and the subject of an Outsports feature and how she, as a trans woman student-athlete pushed for and drove a lot of positive change at her school, with teammates standing and acting in solidarity This was a series of discussions from voice that often are not heard, and need to be.
