Research Data Validates the Value of Pharmacists Providing Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation: An Interview with the Research Investigators

Significant challenges to widescale clinical implementation of PGx include a lack of physician experience using PGx test data or confidence in interpreting PGx test data and integrating the data into the medication therapy management process. For PGx to be most impactful, prescribers must consider PGx data within the context of other non-genetic patient-specific factors. Pharmacists may help prescribers with PGx test data by creating a summary of medication therapy management recommendations for the patient that streamlines PGx report flags and identifies other pharmacotherapy interventions the pharmacist recognizes while applying non-genetic patient-specific data to the PGx test data. In this episode of the PGx for Pharmacists podcast, Dr. Becky Winslow discusses the research study, "Pharmacist Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation," with two of the research investigators, Dr. Anna Langerveld and Dr. David Bright. Dr. Langerveld and Dr. Bright share how this research adds to the growing evidence that clinical pharmacists can help improve the utility of PGx and prescribing. They also share how their study described a process for reducing PGx laboratory report information to a single page of patient-specific clinical recommendations. Lastly, they share that while clinical decision support tools are becoming more routine for pharmacogenomic management, the pharmacists in this study reduced the number of report-based alerts independent of sophisticated clinical decision support informatics. Anna Langerveld, Ph.D., is the Founder and President of Genemarkers, a contract research organization and CLIA/CAP certified testing laboratory specializing in genomics. Anna received her B.A. in Psychology from SUNY Binghamton and her Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Program in Neurosciences at Tulane University. After receiving her Ph.D., Anna served as a Research Assistant Professor at Western Michigan University. She founded Genemarkers in 2008. Under her leadership, Michigan Celebrates Small Business recognized the Company as one of the Top 50 Michigan Companies to watch. Anna is an author of peer-reviewed publications, an NIH grant recipient, and an invited speaker at a wide range of national meetings. Anna currently serves as an adjunct professor and an advisory board member for the Manchester University pharmacogenomics program and holds a community faculty position at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine. Anna has been instrumental in developing strategic community partnerships to implement the use of genomics in clinical care, with a particular focus on mental health and underserved populations. Dr. David Bright is a Professor of Pharmacy at Ferris State University, where he has taught therapeutics and medication therapy management. He received his PharmD degree from the University of Toledo, completed a community pharmacy residency with Kroger Pharmacy and the University of Toledo, and served on the faculty at the Ohio Northern University as a community pharmacy residency program director. His research has primarily involved the pragmatic implementation and improvement of non-dispensing pharmacy services, particularly in the outpatient setting. Most recently, that has involved the integration of pharmacogenomics into clinical practice through community pharmacy and ambulatory care practice models. Research discussed in the podcast episode: Bright D, Saadeh C, DeVuyst-Miller S, Sohn M, Choker A, Langerveld A. Pharmacist Consult Reports to Support Pharmacogenomics Report Interpretation. Gender Affirmed: Inclusion in the Pharmacy | Transforming a Nation

The first in a four-part series detailing medication access for gender-diverse individuals in light of increasingly restrictive legislative action.  As front-line healthcare workers, it’s incumbent upon pharmacists to be paragons of not only equality but equity in healthcare. Gender expansive and nonbinary patients face a massive disparity of outcomes, many of which are improved with gender-affirming therapy. With the expansion of pharmacists’ roles in healthcare, many cases of gender-affirming therapy are often overseen or monitored by pharmacists. The world is changing, and the landscape of healthcare with it. Our audience of pharmacists, pharmacy students, and other healthcare providers need to hear the stories of gender-diverse patients, pharmacists, and advocates who will stop at nothing to bridge the gap to care. Transforming Patient Engagement with LifeLink Systems

We talk with Greg Johnsen, CEO at Lifelink Systems, Inc. #TogetheRx we are transforming patient engagement across the healthcare industry by giving hospital systems and life sciences companies advanced conversational technology to interact with patients where they spend their time — messaging on mobile devices. Our technology turns the smartphone into the next-generation healthcare worker, capable of handling complex workflows at unlimited scale. Information technology has come a long way, but successful user engagement has proven to be a surprisingly daunting last-mile challenge. Healthcare is complicated and the digital tools offered to patients reflect that, which results in low adoption and satisfaction. Delivering digital patient experiences remains a strategic priority, but the healthcare industry needs to reimagine patient-facing technology. The challenge remains: How do we make the complex exceedingly simple, exceedingly intuitive? It turns out that the simplest, most intuitive human interface is a conversation. It’s natural, requires no training, is infinitely flexible, self-directed, and responsive. With smartphone adoption rates approaching 90%, the opportunity to engage in conversation-based information exchanges is in the palms of everyone’s hands. Today, any human with a mobile phone can converse with complex IT systems with ease, and immediately, by relying on smart, context-aware digital assistants. The technology for enabling conversational AI will transform consumer engagement strategies across every industry sector, but it will have an especially profound impact on process-centric customer care industries. Like Healthcare. Conversational AI not only closes a service gap, it improves the quality of the service itself while also providing the engagement horsepower to scale up service operations profitably. Digital assistants carry the encoded protocols, orders, and best practices to the patient in the form of smart, engaging conversations. Importantly, conversational AI technology doesn’t replace human expertise and services, it augments care teams by taking on all of the redundant, high-volume processes. Companies that are taking advantage of this powerful new technology are transforming the patient experience, and dramatically improving customer service across the board. Trading Grenades for Medicine | Transforming a Nation

How does it feel to be torn between two vastly different worlds: the one you were born to, and the one you fled to and eventually thrived in? What does it mean to become an American?  Trading Grenades for Candy is a memoir of a Kurdish woman who fled war and turmoil in Iraqi Kurdistan as a young child and transformed herself into a quintessential American success story. Hers is a richly expressed and deeply personal journey from barely surviving in a mud house amidst landmines, to evolving into an independent, world-traveling pharmacist. By understanding her personal story of hardship and perseverance, readers will come to understand not only her personal triumph, but the wider story of the Kurdish people. This memoir will change the way one looks at what it means not only to be an American, but a fellow human being in our diverse world.  This special edition of 'Transforming a Nation' is with Dr. Helen Sairany, PharmD., author of Trading Grenades for Candy: A Kurdish Refugee's American Journey Learn more about your ad choices.
