California's Malinda Ripley is one of Fargo's first women pioneers

In 2002, USA Wrestling launched the first Junior Women’s Freestyle National Championships and the tournament joined the four men’s divisions in Fargo, North Dakota. The fifth tournament in Fargo would feature just over 100 young women. One of those first champions was California’s Malinda Ripley. Twenty years later, you’ll still find Ripley on the floor in Fargo, coaching the women of Team California. In July of 2022, I caught up with Ripley to talk about what she remembers about the opportunity presented at that first championship, her drive to go “big game hunting” in chasing down Mary Kelly of Illinois and what it’s meant to her to coach a generation of girls who didn’t have to break down doors, rather just walk through them as they were opened by people like Ripley. This is the full interview from the women’s feature released by Mat Talk Online during Fargo back in July. Noted college women's lacrosse coach Kelly Amonte Hiller is in Fargo watching her daughter Harlee competed at the 16U Women's Freestyle National Championships. A fan of combat sports and multiple sports for athletes, Amonte Hiller talks about her daughter's time in wrestling, what the crossover is for mindset training for lacrosse and wrestling and what benefits she's seen from wrestling for her daughter. She also touches on what would make wrestlers good lacrosse players and what women's wrestling can borrow from women's lacrosse as a growing college sport. Epilogue: Harlee Hiller finished 8th in 16U women’s freestyle at 106 pounds, earning All-American honors. Links to Follow

Building women's wrestling with veteran coach Shannyn Gillespie of Lakeland University

An All-American at Lock Haven during his college days, Shannyn Gillespie has been on the front lines of coaching women’s wrestling for nearly two decades. The Illinois native is currently the head wrestling coach at Lakeland University, a Division III school that offers both men’s and women’s wrestling. On Episode 708 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Gillespie talks about his path from suburban Chicago to tiny Lock Haven, Pennsylvania and the path in life that led him to coaching women, including one of the most pivotal spots in women’s wrestling’s growth - the USOEC at Northern Michigan University. Gillespie will obviously pitch his Muskies wrestling program, but also offer perspectives and opinions about wrestling and explain the growth of women’s wrestling, his own coaching career and where he sees the sport moving in the future. He’s got a lot of resources on his website at CoachShannyn.com. Links to Follow

Speaking at the Peninsula Sports Club's Headliner's Night

The 72nd annual Headliner’s Night, hosted by the Peninsula Sports Club, took place on June 27 at the Omni Hotel in Newport News, Virginia. William & Mary football play-by-play commentator Jay Colley served as the Master of Ceremonies for the annual event, which featured Mat Talk Online’s Jason Bryant as the event’s Keynote Speaker. In 2021, Bryant received the Bob Moskowitz Media Award from the Peninsula Sports Club just hours after he left the Olympic Games in Tokyo. This year, he had a chance to speak about his experiences around the mat, but how much his life was shaped by watching and covering sports on the Peninsula before breaking out into the world of international wrestling. The entire night is captured on this episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. The keynote stars around 11 minutes in with a lot of Virginia-based stuff before and after if that’s your kinda thing. Photo provided by Jim Heath. Links to Follow

Prior to getting to the show with Brendan, I’ll give you a rundown on some points about World Team Trials attendance and wrestling attendance in general as well as a shout out to my former boss at the NWCA, Pat Tocci, who is leaving the organization to take a job with a local school district as its Athletics Director. New Central Missouri head coach Cody Garcia begins his own legacy

Cody Garcia was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American and two-time champion at powerhouse Nebraska-Omaha under coach Mike Denney. Garcia, the son of a coach himself, started his career at his alma mater after finishing up with his eligibility in 2009. Most in wrestling know what happened in Omaha at the end of the 2011 season, but Garcia moved on to coach at two NAIA schools in Kansas. His first stop would be Bethany before spending the last seven years leading the Wildcats of Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas. Garcia returns to Division II as the 10th coach at Central Missouri, the same place where his father Mike won an NCAA Division II title in 1982. On Episode 705 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, I talk with Garcia about his path through Omaha, wrestling for Coach Denney at “the other place,” and his return to Division II. Garcia also touches on going into the UNO Hall of Fame despite the school no longer fielding its championship wrestling program and the emotion involving the experience as well as the dynamic of the coaching tree of his college coach impacting the landscape of Division II wrestling in Missouri. Wrestling coach and author J.D. Oliva launches his next trilogy of novels

J.D. Oliva is carving out quite the career for himself as a fiction writer. The wrestling coach at Illinois’ DeKalb High School is publishing a trilogy of books via Kickstarter with his new series, The Wolf Stone Saga. Link: http://kck.st/3EpOqae Oliva also writes on the topic of professional wrestling for FightGameMedia and the first half of our show talks about the crossover with professional wrestling and collegiate and international level wrestling, some of its origins and our thoughts on what the WWE and professional wrestling in general will do with stars like Gable Steveson, A.J. Ferrari and Jacob Kasper either headed to the business or signed to pursue the venture following their competitive years. The second half of Episode 703 dives into Oliva’s writing, its origins and inspirations as well as the development of a novel, a series and how he lays out his ideas. Mic'd Up Matside with Augsburg's Tony Valek

Sometimes we get an opportunity to put new gear to use and try to come up with new features to bring another perspective to coverage and content. Episode 698 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast is just that. With some new wireless devices used to record audio, I hit record on Augsburg co-head coach Tony Valek during the annual Battle of the Burgs dual on January 27 in Minneapolis. What this episode highlights is Valek’s coaching style just as the meet begins, during the competition and how he gets athletes ready during the moments before competing, during injury time and some interactions with the staff as they go through a heated dual meet. Set to background music, this can be consumed as a passive listening experience or listened closely to see how certain coaches are in mat side situations. Will there be more of these? That’s dependent on the feedback. We have two so far - both coming from Battle of the Burgs. Eric Keller, Wartburg head coach, will be released soon. Amid non-Division I powers, Portillo twins match exemplifies wrestling's awesomeness

Iowa natives Justin and Josh Portillo have been battling each other their entire lives. The twin 125-pounders took that sibling rivalry to the next level on January 15 when Josh's Nebraska-Kearney Lopers hosted Justin's Grand View Vikings an a dual between two of the top programs outside of Division I. The bait? UNK was trying to snap Grand View's college wrestling record win streak, which stood at 111 going into the dual. The hook? The twin brothers would wrestle each other in the dual's final bout, presumably with the dual meet outcome - and potentially the streak - on the line.    Links to Follow Daily Wrestling Newsletter: https://www.mattalkonline.com/news Contribute: https://www.mattalkonline.com/contribute Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mattalkonline Rokfin: https://www.rokfin.com/creator/mattalkonline The Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly supported by Compound Sportswear: https://www.mattalkonline.com/compound

Dave Malecek has UW-La Crosse ready for some multi-divisional action on November 12

Episode 686 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast and we’re talking with UW-La Crosse head wrestling coach Dave Malecek about the upcoming triple-dual in La Crosse on November 12 featuring Division I, Division II and Division III simultaneously. We'll also chat about Dave's time in La Crosse and D3 wrestling overall. Malecek was a 1994 All-American for Northern Iowa at 190 pounds before getting into high school teaching and coaching. The opportunity arose to join the Wartburg staff in 2000 and that’s where his affinity for Division III grew after being born outside of Storm Lake, Iowa with then-Buena Vista coach Al Baxter.
