Chapter 81: Happy Birthday, Florida Man (Rebroadcast)

If the 2000s have shown us anything it is the popularity of social media "challenges." Tide Pod, Cinnamon, and 10 Year are just a few that come to mind. Does anybody else remember the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? Ugh I'm still steamed that I was NEVER nominated. So to make up for my FOMO I have nominated myself to take part in an even more exciting challenge: The Florida Man Challenge. Google your birthday followed by "Florida Man" and see what pops up. Mine are "Florida Man Accused of Killing Neighbor Over Cat Issue" and "Florida man, 52, told police that he shot and dismembered his 42-year-old housemate, saying he could 'possibly be the next mass killer that we hear about in the media.'" Oh boy do we have a show for y'all today! Originally broadcast April 20, 2022. Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Jeremy Staple, Janette Zosche, Jordan Katcher, Juno Nifosi, Ahesha Catalano, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Chapter 38: Love like a Hurricane (Rebroadcast with a Note)

Hey Deadtime Storians I wanted to share some sad news with all of you. Unfortunately we lost a very close friend to our personal family as well as the Deadtime Stories family this weekend. On Sunday Tracy Zales, our friend and theme song composer passed away. She was one of the kindest souls on this planet and we are absolutely devastated by the news. In honor of Tracy, I wanted to re-run the first episode we used her music for. Rest in peace my friend. New Orleans is full of history, ghost stories, and true crime. The case of Zack Bowen and Addie Hall is perhaps the city's most infamous crime but the tales about the couple told late at night by ghost tours through the French Quarter don't come anywhere close to examining the couple's full story. Written by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Walker Barnes, Taylor Shurte, Tamara Perry, Jordan Katcher, Allyn Anthony Moriyon, Marissa Pistone, Jeremy Staple, Matt MacNelly, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Chapter 21: The Artist San Francisco Forgot (Rebroadcast)

The Doodler was one of the first stories that drew me into the true crime world. Back in the 70s, a man was terrorizing The Castro District in San Francisco by luring in his victims with drawings of them on a cocktail napkin. I'd definitely be a sucker for a portrait of myself but would not want to meet the fate these men did. Originally broadcast June 19, 2019. Written, narrated, and edited by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones. Chapter 55: Catching the Love Bug (Rebroadcast)

How's that old COVID-19 joke go? Murder your spouse now, blame it on the corona virus later? If you're a fan of true crime memes then you probably saw this at some point last year. In Florida, it became a reality. Of course this wasn't the first time a virus was used as a weapon. Just a few years ago, Daryll Rowe harnessed HIV to attack other gay men. Chapter 24: A Bad Case of the Mondays (Rebroadcast)

Not so fun fact: there have been 200 mass shootings which have claimed over 11,000 lives in the United States this year. For those counting, we're at 130 days this year which means we're averaging more than one shooting a day. Those numbers ARE. NOT. O. K. Gun violence needs to end in this country and I feel something I can do is remind my listeners about the stories of survivors and victims. Brenda Spencer is known as the mother of school shootings. Hopefully by hearing her story, we do not forget the lives of the victims of Grover Cleveland Elementary School. Originally broadcast August 30, 2019. PLEASE NOTE: Today's episode includes language some may find triggering. These slurs are for the purpose of historical accuracy and do not reflect the opinions of the cast or crew at The Original Deadtime Stories. This version of the episode has these slurs bleeped out. We've seen how dangerous Amite County was for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Herbert Lee was murdered in broad daylight by a politician. To celebrate the start of the new year, I'm going to keep with tradition and share our most popular episode of 2022! He terrorized Italian immigrants in the early 1900s and introduced us to the term "jazz it." But did you know this was not the first incident of an unknown person (or persons) terrorizing Louisiana with an ax? It probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that over five years earlier, someone was attacking black communities with a family's own hatchet in the dead of night. Sound familiar?
