804: Justin Skinner – Fail With Grace

I tend to be opposed to putting things in boxes, and to me, the concept of ‘failure’ is potentially another box. Is failure really failure? Or is it just an ‘obstacle’ or a ‘learning experience?’ Or maybe, is failure simply representative of the fact that you’re out in the world things? In this episode, we’re going to ‘unpack the box of failure’ with Justin Skinner. In our conversation, we talk about the differences between ‘failures’ vs. ‘obstacles’ vs. ‘normalcy,’ the importance of detaching the idea of failure from self-worth, why failure is relative, and how to leverage failure as a form of (healthy) motivation. We also discuss the concepts of failure and the importance of giving ourselves grace specifically as it applies to those of us who are entrepreneurs and self-employed. Justin grew up in Springfield, Missouri, on a dairy farm just north of the city limits. He is the oldest of four children and married to Kendra Joy Skinner. They currently live in Springfield with their little Morkie-Poo Daisy. Justin played collegiate baseball at Crowder JUCO and Drury University and is inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Soon after college (and getting fired from a job) Justin and Kendra started their own business in Springfield. Together, they also began investing in real estate and running short-term rentals. 801: Steve Prentice – Overcome Fear of the Future

As I like to say, you can’t stop a moving train. In business, I have often seen people try to fight off technology transformation…to no avail. This resistance can be a detriment to small businesses, but I get it – change can be hard, and feelings of being left behind or finding yourself suddenly irrelevant are understandably fear-inducing. Yet, change is inevitable…which is why Steve Prentice joins us in this episode today. In this illuminating conversation, Steve and I talk about managing technological change, a topic I believe is truly essential to small businesses and self-employed entrepreneurs. We discuss technological transformation, its impact on the future of work and how it can help (or hinder) our feeling ‘in control,’ as well as managing fear and accepting change. Steve Prentice is a specialist in organizational psychology, focusing on the junction where people and technology interact. He helps people and organizations understand each other, the technologies they use, and the changes that these present. He is a speaker, writer, journalist, and university lecturer who focuses on human acceptance of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, blockchain and the future of work. His fourth book is entitled  (Apress, May 9, 2022) and it focuses on this one key fact: humans are driven by fear, and its roots are much deeper than they appear — anyone who seeks to deploy digital transformation successfully must understand this. What do we tend to center our business goals around? Revenue, right? In this episode, find out why that might not be the best idea…and what to do differently. As my guest, Eleanor Beaton, says, “the hunt for immediate revenue can hold us back from making long-term decisions that actually create sustainable, long-term wealth.” In this fascinating conversation, Eleanor and I talk about the need for long-term thinking, the downsides of constant urgency, and the power of building a business ecosystem. In today’s conversation with guest Tara Nolan, we discuss retirement for the self-employed — perhaps not the sexiest of topics, but highly necessary! In this hopeful and judgement-free conversation, Tara and I talk about how we, as self-employed entrepreneurs, need to think about retirement and how to plan for it. 794: Tony Martignetti – Journey to a Fulfilled Life

What does it mean to be truly fulfilled? And how does that differ from being happy? In this episode, featuring guest Tony Martignetti, we explore the notion of fulfillment. According to Tony, fulfillment is a mindset. As he says in his book, “Happiness and fulfillment are a place to come from, not a place to go to.” A pattern I’ve been noticing, especially post-pandemic and in the midst of the so-called “Great Resignation,” is people’s overarching desire to do work. The desire to do substantial work ties directly to the desire to be fulfilled. Listen as Tony and I explore these topics in the context of our current environment. Tony Martignetti is a trusted advisor, coach, author, podcast host, and speaker. He brings together over 25 years of business and management experience to elevate leaders and equip them to navigate through change and unlock their true potential. He loves guiding people to find clarity in their lives, so they are energized, fully present, and fulfilled. 790: Karen Grill – The Positive Side of Persuasion

Ultimately, all business is about persuasion – persuading someone to choose your services, persuading someone to buy from you, etc. In fact, relationship-building in general is a form of persuasion. But persuasion does not have to be manipulative.  Rather, as today’s guest Karen Grill tells us, persuasion strategies allow us, as business owners, to effectively describe what our business offers, so that potential clients can see our products and services as solutions to their problems. As Karen says, “If you really believe in your product or service, you should be wanting to tell everybody what you do and how you can help them.” In this episode, Karen and I discuss the positive side of persuasion in business, and Karen teaches us the 8 Persuasion Levers.   Karen Grill is a Business Coach & Certified Persuasion Strategist.  Having started her first online business over 14 years ago, she knows the struggles of entrepreneurs and has created strategies to help businesses produce stellar results. 783: AJ Harper – Write a Book that Changes Lives (Including Your Own!)

Today’s episode is a very special interview with my good friend and editor, AJ Harper, who has done more for raising the bar for writing good books than anyone I know. Generally, a ‘good’ book doesn’t simply function as a “better business card” or marketing tool for a personal brand or business. Rather, a ‘good’ book becomes a “must-read” that readers actively recommend to others. In this conversation, AJ shares her “reader-first” philosophy and her insights into how to write a perennial bestseller that truly serves your reading audience. Using her wealth of experience and knowledge, AJ talks us through how a book can become a “top three book” that changes lives (including your own!). She also gives us a sneak peek into her own new book,     AJ Harper is an editor and publishing strategist who helps authors write foundational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand and make a significant impact on the world. As ghostwriter and as developmental editor, she has worked with newbies to New York Times bestselling authors with millions of books sold. AJ is writing partner to business author, Mike Michalowicz. Together they’ve written six books, including Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan, and their latest, Fix This Next. Through her Top Three Book Workshops and Retreats, AJ empowers authors with insider publishing knowledge and guides them through the book development, writing, and editing process. AJ lives with her wife and son in New York’s Lower Hudson Valley. 781: Jen Nash – Tiny Connections, Big Outcomes

Expounding on the theme of ‘creating your own good luck’ discussed in a recent episode, today my guest Jen Nash and I talk about how the things that so many of us want – career success, financial security, an exciting life, or just ‘getting lucky’ – may be achieved simply by the power of connection. If, like me, you don’t like “networking,” this enlightening conversation provides a helpful alternative. By looking at connection-building as a series of ordinary, everyday occurrences consisting of tiny connections – instead of as onerous “networking” activities – connecting with others to achieve big outcomes becomes unintimidating…and even fun!   Jen Nash helps us take a deeper look at how anyone can create deeper more powerful connections in modern life, one interaction at a time. She is an executive coach, facilitator, speaker, and author of The Big Power of Tiny Connections: How Small Interactions Spark Awesome Outcomes. Trained in the field of communication, Nash has a powerful grasp on what is required to turn a brush of fate into a life changing event. When she’s not empowering others to live a more connective life, Nash lives between New York City or Los Angeles or San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.   * *   * And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple Podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don’t miss an episode. 779: Dr. Marshall Goldsmith – Living an Earned Life

We may be given life, but life itself is not a given. It is to be earned. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Marshall Goldsmith about what it means to live a deliberate life, avoid regret, and achieve an ‘earned life.’ For Dr. Goldsmith, an earned life occurs when our risks, efforts, and commitments are aligned with a higher purpose, regardless of the results. Those of us who are self-employed entrepreneurs are usually ambitious and focused on results. But in this fascinating conversation, Dr. Goldsmith wisely advises us to never base our self-worth on results, and never assume happiness comes from results. Rather, you can choose fulfillment, regardless of results.   Dr. Marshall Goldsmith is a member of the Hall of Fame. He is the only two-time #1 Leadership Thinker in the World. 777: Shira Miller – Getting Unstuck!

* Almost all of us have felt ‘stuck’ at some point in our lives. Some of us go through temporary phases of feeling stuck, some of us feel chronically stuck, and some of us feel stuck in some areas of our lives but not in others. (Those of us who are entrepreneurs and self-employed are certainly not immune to feeling stuck.) Our guest today, Shira Miller, felt significantly stuck in her life – so much so that she now specializes in studying why people feel stuck, identifying the ‘types of stuck,’ and most importantly, helping others learn to get unstuck! She has transitioned from financial ruin to prosperity, chronic health challenges to a constant state of wellness, obesity to sustaining a healthy weight loss, divorce to lasting love, and an unfulfilling career to a purpose-driven life. Her new book Free and Clear: Get Unstuck and Live the Life You Want, features a step-by-step process for getting unstuck and staying that way for good.
