Kiki's Delivery Service

Adapted from Eiko Kadono's children's fantasy novel, Kiki's Delivery Service is a sweet coming-of-age anime film that's sure to entertain the whole family. It tells the story of Kiki, a young witch who sets up a delivery service, and the adventures she has along the way.

After a brief break from her witch training, Kiki finds herself on a quest for a new life. When she arrives in a new town, she sets up a delivery service in the attic of a local bakery. Her mother helps her get set up, and she meets a local baker, Osono.

Kiki starts her delivery service, and soon finds herself befriending an elderly lady who makes herring and pumpkin potpie. Kiki learns how to use her magical powers and finds a new purpose. She also meets Ursula, a painter who lives in a cabin by the woods. As she grows older, Kiki begins to lose her magical powers. She also begins to feel lonely.

Kiki's Delivery Service depicts a divide between independence and reliance in the hopes and spirit of ordinary Japanese teenage girls. The film's plot is intriguing and includes plenty of humor. Kiki's story is a great example of the kind of "Slice of Life" work that Studio Ghibli is famous for.

The film was a hit in Japan. It sold about 2.64 million tickets and became the highest-grossing film in Japan in 1989. It was also a box office success overseas.
