Dive into a riveting tale of adventure and self-discovery on this episode of Adventure Sports Podcast. Meet Alonzo, whose thirst for exploration was ignited early on by his father's sage advice and travel stories. From a few eye-opening international trips to a transformative semester in Thailand, Alonzo's passion for travel only grew stronger after graduation. But it wasn't until he embarked on an epic journey with two childhood friends that his wanderlust truly took flight. Saving up every penny, they ventured back to Thailand, determined to uncover its hidden treasures. Little did they know, their path would lead them to the remote reaches of northern Thailand, where a chance encounter with a wooden boat in Chang Kong changed everything. Against all odds (and arguably the hardest part of the adventure), they convinced locals to sell them a wooden boat, setting the stage for an unforgettable expedition down the legendary Mekong River. For ten exhilarating days, they navigated its dangerous waters, camping under the stars along the riverbank. Join us as we unravel the gripping tale of Alonzo's journey over twenty years later, where the call of adventure and the spirit of exploration collide for these young friends in the heart of Southeast Asia's fabled Golden Triangle. Originally aired, February 18, 2019. When Adrian’s wife thought it would be a good idea to learn how to Paraglide, she probably didn’t foresee that in a relatively short amount of time, her husband would be summiting and flying solo off volcanoes near their home in Mexico City. Obviously, Adrian took to the sport quickly and it gave him a completely different view of his other favorite hobby, climbing. But with their recent family addition of a little girl and limited time off work, Adrian needed a way to summit mountains over 18,000 feet and return home in the same day. This led him to sleeping in a hypoxic chamber to decrease the amount of time needed to acclimate to high elevation. Talk about dedication to adventure. What’s your excuse? Today we’re hearing from Adventure Sports Podcast alumni, West Hanson. You may remember West from episode 581, when he kayaked the Amazon River from source to sea. This adventure is another world record: the first kayakers to complete the Northwest Passage in a single expedition. The 1,600-mile, 83-day (total of 105 days) paddle is the epitome of an epic adventure, making this episode an instant classic. West’s account of the sub-freezing expedition is wonderful. You’re going to love this one! West is a 61-year-old social worker in the mental health field for several decades. At age 46, he was invited to compete with friends in a raft race on the Amazon River in Iquitos. This was his first trip outside of the US and after 20 years racing ultramarathon canoes/kayaks, it sparked his interest in long-distance expeditions. He is the first to lead successful expeditions down the entire lengths of the Amazon and Volga Rivers. Author Caroline Paul has always filled her life with adventure. Now in her late fifties, she expects this new stage of life to be every bit as invigorating and full of high adrenalin escapades as the last. But as she skateboards, paddles a SUP, or surfs in cold winter swell alongside many men her age, she sees fewer and fewer older women. Isn’t the outdoors a vital elixir? Shouldn’t adventure be something we pursue as we age? These are the questions Caroline Paul asks in her new book, . Among the interviews were 93-year-old hiker Dot Fisher-Smith, 80-year-old SCUBA diver Louise Wholey, 52-year-old BASE jumper Drew Brooks, and the many septuagenarian Wave Catchers, who boogie board together in the San Diego surf. These women aren’t famous. They aren’t experts. But their experiences offer important insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age. Caroline dives deep into the research on aging, but also accompanies older women on bird-watching outings, sea kayaking excursions, swim laps, and walks in the park, among other outdoor adventures, and begins to see her own future in a new and dazzling light. Combining scientific research, cultural studies, psychology, and personal stories, Tough Broad is a high-spirited call for women to embrace the outdoors, not back away from it, in our fifties, sixties, seventies and beyond. Caroline Paul is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure and Lost Cat: A True Story of Love, Desperation, and GPS Technology, which has been translated into fifteen languages. She is also the author of the memoir Fighting Fire, the middle-grade book You Are Mighty: A Guide to Changing the World, and the novel East Wind, Rain. Her TED Talk, “To Raise Brave Girls, Encourage Adventure,” has been viewed over 2 million times. A longtime member of the Writers Grotto, she lives in San Francisco. Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what she did. When Craig and his buddy, Skip, applied for the longest paddle race in the world in 2019, he had no idea how much that decision would change his life. Once selected, the realization that he had never done anything like this, had no real skills or talent in paddling, and knew nothing about adventure started flooding his mind. However Craig and Skip committed to giving it their best effort and put a plan together to train, learn, and go from never racing before to completing a fully self-supported 1,000-mile paddle through some of the most remote wilderness in North America. At 46 years young, Craig wanted to inspire others to push themselves and take on challenges that go beyond their comfort zone. When I applied for the Yukon 1000 in 2019 I had not taken part in any feat of endurance. After years of watching his dad participate in endurance adventure races, Hunter begged him to let him join in on a race. His dad looked around at all his fellow competitors and noticed there wasn't a single kid out there let alone someone even in their 20s. Dad was eventually convinced to let Hunter do a 6-hour adventure race at 7 years old! That kicked off an adventure career that spans some of the most difficult challenges in adventure racing, including many “youngest ever” records. Today we’re talking about Hunter’s most recent experience, a fastest known time of the iconic Florida Trail, the official thru-hike of winter! The 1,100 mile trek through swamp, sand, and skeeters was completed by Hunter in 21.5 days. Hey y’all! Doing something a little different today. I want to share the formula that my friends and I have come up with in recent years to ensure we get out and adventure on a regular basis. As the host of this show, I probably don’t get out there as much as you’d think, only because of the time of life and the fact a lot of my free time is used in producing the podcast! This formula has helped us ensure we put adventure on the calendar and make it happen. This mindset has been heavily inspired by Frazer Buntin’s annual “Big Trip”, which you can learn more about in Episode 717: How to Pull off an Epic Yearly Adventure With Your Friends - Frazer Buntin. https://www.adventuresportspodcast.com/2021/05/ep-717-how-to-pull-off-epic-yearly.html If you have any questions about how we do it, please reach out! For the last several years Heather Bolint has led a nomadic lifestyle, initially inspired by her decision to quit her job and thru-hike the Appalachian Trail as a solo female. You might have heard about her hiker fame of rescuing an abandoned rooster on the AT and hiking with him for 42 miles, earning the trail name "mama cluck". Since then, Heather has also thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, Florida's Ocean to Lake Trail, paddled the 99-mile Everglades Wilderness Waterway, and hiked 1,100 miles around the coastline of Florida while collecting 3 tons of plastic from the beaches. Heather's most recent adventure of paddling nearly 400 miles of the Intracoastal Waterway was inspired by an idea she had when her parents moved south from her home state of Maine. After her father's death in 2022, she decided to fulfill her dream in remembrance of her father, and discover the healing properties of adventuring in nature. Alison was born and raised in Ohio and recently graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art. She wanted to do something epic to celebrate the milestone and take a deep look into the place she loved; her home state of Ohio. The Ohio Project was born. Alsup proceeded to traversed 3,416 miles by foot, bike, and rollerblades focused on seeing as much of Ohio as possible. She bikepacked 850 miles along the entire length of the Ohio River, thru hiked the 1,444 mile Buckeye Trail, bikepacked 796 miles around the entire perimeter of Lake Erie, and then did a bike/rollerblade combo of 326 mile Ohio to Erie Trail from Cleveland to Cincinnati. Alsup is currently working on a body of artwork about the beauty of the Ohio Region, and its natural wonder, historical importance, and the kindness of its residents. She will be showing her art in exhibitions and festivals, and selling her work on her website. She hopes her project will spread appreciation for Ohio, encouraging its natural protection, and for residents to explore their own backyards. This story is so incredible it deserves another listen. All the way back in episode 217 Steve joined us to recount his adventure of survival. An avid sailor, naval architect and New York Times best-selling author, Steve Callahan designed and built his 21' sloop the Napoleon Solo to sail it across the Atlantic Ocean from Newport, RI to England with plans to compete in a regatta. Once underway in the race, Steve experienced issues with the boat and was forced to drop out. Once repairs were made, he continued on his way only to be stopped in his tracks in the middle of the ocean when his sailboat was struck and began to sink. Listen is as Steve recounts his 76 day journey across the Atlantic in his life raft with only his ditch kit and a small spear gun with him. Alastair Humphreys is a British adventurer and author who famously spent over 4 years cycling round the world, a journey of 46,000 miles through 60 countries and 5 continents. This was followed by a walk across India, rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, running six marathons through the Sahara desert, a crossing of Iceland, busking through Spain and an expedition in the Arctic. Despite these massive adventures, Alastair is most famous for coining the concept of “microadventures” which earned him National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and numerous awards for his book of that name https://alastairhumphreys.com/product/microadventures/. The whole point of microadventures is that you do not need much time, money or specialized gear. A microadventure can be anything that feels fresh, new and challenging for you. This was the subject of our last conversation with Alastair back in 2019. You can listen to that here https://www.adventuresportspodcast.com/2019/06/ep-538-balancing-normal-life-as-career.html. Today we’re talking about taking the concept of microadventures to a whole new level. Most recently Alastair has spent a whole year exploring the land within 10 kilometers of his home. Every week, he would pick a new place within that range to explore and camp. The change and perspective shift that he experiences through this adventure has caused a massive shift in his outlook, which we’ll get into today. Hey y’all! This is new for me, a recap of a personal adventure. Although this trip was NOTHING compared to what some of our guests have done, it was a fun micro-adventure that got way more press and attention than I thought it would. My good friend, Jordon, and I set out on New Year's Eve to be the first people (we know of) to paddle across the largest lake in Florida, Lake Okeechobee. The route was a straight shot from North to South for 35 miles, taking just under 12 hours. Also, if you don’t have months off work and life to do something fun, take it from me, 11.5 hours is plenty of time to get all the same fulfillment and soul-filling adventure! Thank you to Bluefin SUP for helping sponsor the trip! It was 23 months after Peter’s accident and he was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany: "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better, right?” With no real camping or outdoor experience, Peter set a starting date a mere three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it. This is our first episode of the year and I wanted to highlight a story that captures everything our show is about. Randy is a longtime listener and friend of the show. His story is amazing and showcases the power of adventure in our lives. It all started with a hike. Several years ago, Randy Brandt and his then teenage son were out hiking when they ran into an older man who shared that he had just completed visiting all the National Parks. From that moment forward, Randy was inspired and made it a goal of doing more adventures and not simply waiting around for retirement to do the things he wanted to do. He has now visited over 30 National Parks and participated in countless challenges, including bikepacking the Arizona Trail, Colorado Trail, and the Tour Divide in a calendar year, running an ultra marathon, and riding motorcycles through the Himalayas of India! What are you going to do differently in 2024? Originally aired January 16, 2017 Jeff Golden of the Colorado Mountain Club rejoins the Adventure Sports Podcast today to visit about climbing Colorado's 14ers again, but this time in the winter! Why wait for the short summer season? Winter mountaineering is beautiful and can be done safely with a little training and the right gear. In October 2017, climber and national park ranger, Quinn Brett, took a horrific 100-ft fall in Yosemite National park when climbing a route on the iconic El Capitan, which Quinn had already climbed before. The accident left her paralyzed from the waist down and she was faced with a new and uncomfortable reality of not having freedom and mobility to explore and adventure. Although Quinn is very open about how much it sucks to go through, she has achieved some of her most impressive adventures after the accident, including the legendary Tour Divide mountain bike race. More than 20 years ago, 7th-grade Kurt entered his first mountain bike race at the Minnesota Zoo, and he's been racing and adventuring on bikes ever since. After bouncing around the road and scenes while in graduate school, he eventually returned to the dirt and became enamored by probing mental and physical limits in multi-day ultra endurance events, winning and setting records in some of the toughest bikepacking races in the United States – Tour Divide, the Arizona Trail 300 and 750, the Colorado Trail Race, the Iditarod Trail Invitational, and more. Today we’re honing in on Kurt’s recent completion (only the third ever) of biking the CDT. Yes, most of the CDT is bikeable (I didn’t know this), with the opportunity to take different routes through the non-bikeable wilderness segments. This trail is hard so even for a seasoned and record-breaking cyclist like Kurt, the mileage doesn’t come easy. Rugged backcountry trails are where he loves riding the most. He rides for the Industry Nine - Pivot Pro Backcountry team, and beyond pedaling his bike, Kurt is a co-founder of and the Routes Director at Bikepacking Roots, a cycling coach, a former geology professor, and an advocate for landscapes, backcountry trails, and climate.
