In hindsight, The Dawning of the Age of LiLo was perhaps more portentous of the road to come than we may have thought at the time. We’ve never read the book “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” is based on, and this movie certainly doesn’t pique my interest. In fact, the most interesting thing about the movie is the career trajectories of its youngest stars. Some became top dollar talent, some stopped acting entirely. This movie is a question, and the answer is “No.” AUDIO WARNING: When we mention line dancing, and drop the clip of dance rehearsal and Lola thinking about being a professional, the next clip is Josh shrieking bird noises. Strange World is an odd duck. It’s trying too hard, but not for the reasons the comments on Rotten Tomatoes would have you think. It’s a bit cliche to blame the failure of a charmer on lack of confidence from the studio (read: marketing budget), but we think that’s the case here. It’s hard to imagine a more disturbing take on Pinocchio after the 1940 animated film. The coachman? The smoke monsters? The body horror of becoming a donkey? Horrifying. Effective, even, as the cautionary tale it was. But this? Literal nightmare fuel. And not just Tom Hanks’ attempt at an Italian accent.
