677: The “Carfax” of Solar, How Software is (finally) Transforming Fieldwork Management, With James Nagel & David Penalva of HelioVolta

Can the solar industry utilize advanced data analytics and software to address the challenges of integrating renewable energy sources into the grid, maintaining project quality, and ensuring long-term asset value? Where are there still gaps to address? As the industry matures, project developers, asset owners and grid operators are increasingly focusing on leveraging data streams from the field to enhance project performance as well as grid reliability. However, one element of data gathering has been a perennial gray area - accurate fieldwork management, which is still a very manual process in just about every respect. And it just may be the part of post-construction asset value retention that is most overlooked, till now. American Made Solar Prize winners, James Nagel and David Penalva, co-founders of SolarGrade by HelioVolta, converted their extensive experience in solar project development and data analysis into a robust software aimed at precisely this conundrum.  SolarGrade, a software tool designed to tackle this challenge by automating field reporting and creating a centralized database called SolarFax, akin to a "Carfax for solar." By integrating detailed project data, SolarGrade aims to improve predictive maintenance, enhance performance insights, and ultimately, support the reliable and cost-effective deployment of solar energy. And, like Carfax, it may prove incredibly useful in the valuation and resale of these assets someday. 674: Where to get the best electricity grid carbon data in seconds, with Wenbo Shi of Singularity Energy

Occasionally on the anniversary of an episode that really impacted us, we like to run a vignette of something we learned from such an episode to give new listeners (or those of you who just insight from the excellent content in our back catalog, much of which we believe is worth revisiting. As GHG emissions continue to rise, the need to understand and effectively manage carbon emissions on the grid is crucial. Yet, a significant obstacle remains: most individuals and organizations lack real-time, accurate data on their carbon footprint, particularly in relation to electricity consumption. Traditional methods offer only outdated regional averages that fail to reflect the dynamic nature of the power grid, especially with more renewables being deployed. This gap in data is a limitation upon everyone seeking to mitigate the climate crisis from grid operators to individual consumers. Wenbo Shi founded Singularity Energy to resolve this issue once and for all. In this SunCast Soundbyte, Wenbo discusses the pressing issue of GHG emissions and the vital role of accurate carbon data in fighting climate change. Many lack real-time data on their carbon footprint, especially in electricity usage. Traditional methods, offering outdated regional averages, don't align with the dynamic power grid, since there is increased renewable presence on the grid. Singularity Energy, born from Wenbo's pivot from energy management to carbon data, addresses this gap.  Singularity Energy stands at the forefront of providing accurate, real-time carbon intensity data. Their innovative approach leverages a combination of public data and proprietary grid operation information from regional utility partners like Eversource. The company’s unique methodology allows for more precise, location-specific carbon estimates, empowering consumers and utilities alike with the data necessary to make more informed decisions on how to effectively reduce GHG emissions. This episode highlights the critical role of real-time carbon data in emission reduction, aligning perfectly with Singularity Energy's mission to deliver up-to-date, granular grid carbon data. This empowers entities to make well-informed decisions, steering them towards effective carbon emission reduction strategies. 672: Giving Old Solar Panels a Second Life with Cesar Barbosa of Nulife Power Services

What happens to solar panels when they reach the end of their financed life, but not necessarily their useful life? With the solar industry's growth, the issue of decommissioned panels has become a burgeoning service (and business) opportunity. These “old” panels, though no longer new, are often still under warranty, and definitely still retain a significant portion of their functional capacity and rated power. As we’ll see in today’s conversation, harnessing their remaining potential, or 'second life', could turn a potential waste problem into an opportunity for ongoing clean energy production social good. Cesar Barbosa, the Founder of Nulife Power Services, has recognized the potential in these gently-used solar panels. Instead of discarding them, Barbosa sees an opportunity to give these panels a second life. His company focuses on refurbishing, repurposing, and old solar arrays (mostly in California), and extending the usability of that older equipment coming off those systems for solar projects in his native Mexico, where affordable solar energy solutions are most needed. Through this innovative approach, Barbosa not only addresses the issue of waste in the solar industry but also helps bridge the clean energy gap in less affluent regions. This discussion highlights the critical need for innovative approaches of making sure solar panels and components are used to their full capacity, reducing waste. It emphasizes how repurposing and repowering solar panels not only addresses environmental concerns but also enhances clean energy access in places like Latin America. 671: We Can Secure Drinking Water From The Air! Renewable Energy Pioneer Takes on Renewable Water, with Alex von Welczeck of SkyH2O

We often talk here about renewable energy. But how often have you thought about renewable water?  Is it even a thing? And, what if we could manufacture clean water, from the air? Did you know, the EPA reports that 45% of U.S. tap water is toxic!?!  And, while an estimated 3 billion people globally currently face water stress, that number is projected to increase to 5.2 billion by 2050!  This situation underscores the interconnectedness of the climate and water crises, emphasizing the vital “energy-water nexus” and the urgent need for solutions to ensure both water availability purity. Alexander von Welczek founded SkyH2O to address these water challenges through. As a seasoned climate tech & solar finance entrepreneur, von Welczek's journey in the water sector began around 2015, motivated by California's severe droughts. And, when he partnered with UC Berkeley scientists shortly after, SkyH2O's ambitious vision of large-scale AWG systems became a reality. Von Welczek and the Berkeley team engineered a system capable of producing 10,000-100,000 gallons of water per day, which is particularly well oriented to solving commercial and industrial water needs. His insights into the global water crisis offer a deep dive into the potential and challenges associated with AWG, a technology that holds massive potential to relieve global water stress as it literally generates water directly from the air without relying on existing water bodies.  I’ve known Alex since his early days in Solar, and have been watching as he incubated SkyH2O from it’s earliest ideation.  So I’m honored to finally feature Alex here on SunCast.  SkyH2O's approach to AWG offers a scalable solution to water stress and toxicity. Von Welczek's motto, "no excuses, let's make it happen," embodies the spirit of this mission, inspiring a call to action for sustainable, global water management.  This discussion reveals the importance of innovative approaches in climate tech, highlighting SkyH2O's role in addressing the critical need for clean, accessible water and showcasing how visionary solutions can lead to a more sustainable world for future generations. 664: Inside Trina Solar's Strategy for Global Expansion, with President Steven Zhu

In 2003 the cost of solar panels was a staggering $10 per watt, one of the largest impediments to widespread adoption. However, today Photovoltaic (PV) modules have been reported to be as low as 10 cents per Watt in some SE Asian markets!  It’s not just a reflection of technological advancement, but also the result of relentless pursuit, strategic innovation, and the efforts of visionaries and executives working to scale the infrastructure required to bring the clean energy transition into view. The more the cost can be driven down the more it can be popularized and industrialized, and with solar technology, that cost begins at the solar cell.  One company leading the solar revolution and continually innovating is Trina Solar. With over 150 GW of modules shipped since its inception and an impressive 5GW shipped to the US just last year—ranking number one in importation volumes—Trina Solar has stood for over a decade as a global leader in solar technology. They recently announced the expansion of their manufacturing into the US with their Wilmer, TX solar module facility.  A key figure in Trina Solar's impressive growth story is Steven Zhu, President of Trina Solar US. After spending his childhood in China, Zhu followed in his parents’ footsteps pursuing higher education in the United States at UVA.  After a stint at IBM, he transitioned into entrepreneurship.  His eventual fateful meeting with Trina’s Chairman Gao is a little-told but worthwhile story and it’s captured here in today’s episode. His leadership trajectory, marked by an impeccable balance of ambition and conservative execution, has been pivotal for the company. Steven's visionary leadership has not only helped Trina weather the industry's fluctuating highs and lows but also played a significant role in making solar energy more accessible and affordable. Steven's insights detail the importance of localization, technological efficiency, customer-centricity, and a balanced commercial approach. Illustrating the urgent need for a transition towards a clean, sustainable energy future, he emphasizes that to achieve our clean energy goals and reach 100 GW on the US grid, we need a continued diversification of the supply chain to reduce costs. Merely banking on incentives is not sustainable for achieving grid parity.  This conversation underscores the broader lesson—the world must invest not only in renewable energy but also in strategic, sustainable, and diversified solutions to meet our critical energy demands.  I hope you enjoy this rare glimpse into the foundational years of Trina Solar through the eyes of one of its key contributors. 663: Launch of Valence & the Influencer List

Happy New Year!!!  If you’ve been following along on Linkedin, then you’re now doubt aware that last week I launched “Valence” - a LinkedIn newsletter specifically geared toward connecting the dots between the stories we tell and the people who tell them in this pivotal clean energy transition. As a natural connector, I find resonance in the idea of VALENCE as it pertains to the combining power of elements, which I explain a whole lot further in today’s special episode. Just as atoms unite to form compounds, our collective effort as professionals, influencers, and enthusiasts of renewable energy can compound if we learn to tailor our narrative to hit the mark more often with our intended audience(s). Valence, drawing from its etymological roots meaning "power" and "capacity," becomes a guiding force in my work. As part of the launch, we introduced "The Influencer List," a curated selection of individuals reshaping the discourse around Energy and Climate in 2024. This list comprises creators, entrepreneurs, thinkers, and doers who leverage compelling storytelling to rewrite narratives, showcasing the momentum behind global climate action. Recognizing the 'elemental' individuals within our sector is vital for this unified vision. So far I’ve highlighted notable influencers like Alessandro Blasi https://www.linkedin.com/posts/nickalus_personaldevelopment-personalbranding-innovation-activity-7145487247927123969-bHaf/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop from the International Energy Agency, climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/content/?keywords=nico%20katharine%20hayhoe&sid=*x(&update=urn%3Ali%3Afs_updateV2%3A(urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7145907469351882752%2CBLENDED_SEARCH_FEED%2CEMPTY%2CDEFAULT%2Cfalse), and renewables pioneer CEO & Founder of Nextracker Daniel Shugar https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/valence-influencer-list-day-3-daniel-shugar-johnson--fr8we%3FtrackingId=WKU%252BJhobMHmjeh1ml8xy4Q%253D%253D/?trackingId=WKU%2BJhobMHmjeh1ml8xy4Q%3D%3D and his enlightening "Dinner with Dan" series. These influencers along with others that will be added daily through January 6 and then weekly, much like valence electrons, are crucial participants in the foundational elements of change we seek in our global infrastructure and resource utilization. In 2024, I hope Valence becomes more than just a newsletter—it may be a catalyst for daily connections, combining multifaceted ideas, and leveraging resources within our community. We hope that by subscribing to Valence on LinkedIn, our listeners and followers will actively participate in the mission of connecting and advancing our clean energy community by learning from those who are already doing it well and emulating that success in their own endeavors. Enjoy, and let me know what you think by DM’ing me over on Linkedin http://www.linkedin.com/in/nickalus, ok? 662: Turning Communities Into Renewable Properties, with Aaron Halimi

Community solar democratizes access to clean energy for those unable to install rooftop solar. National Renewable Energy Laboratory https://www.energy.gov/eere/solar/community-solar-basics analysis shows nearly 50% of households and businesses face limitations for rooftop solar systems. This model expands renewable energy on the grid, offering widespread access to clean energy benefits and giving distributed renewable energy more equitable access. Aaron Halimi is the President of Renewable Properties and brings over a decade of experience in solar and real estate. His solar experience began when his family's land became the first utility-scale land deal SunEdison ever signed. While that 20 MW project ultimately didn’t get built, the experience led Aaron to Borrego Solar (leading their Utility project origination) and a fruitful and prolific career in solar. Aaron went on to start Renewable Properties, which focuses on the evolution of community solar, addressing the industry's challenges with scaling origination, lowering development risk, and contributing to early market acceptance of the community solar model. He emphasizes how the industry has made community solar projects more financially attractive by professionalizing the difficult land and customer acquisition through companies like his as well as third-party subscriber companies that aggregate the consumer demand. Renewable Properties now has 80% of their pipeline focused on community solar, and the roots of the company and its choices in product are found in Aaron’s family business - cowboy boots. Halimi underscores the importance of dispelling myths around solar implementation with education and storytelling, ultimately encouraging a broader acceptance of solar power. Aaron also dives into the intersection of renewable energy and the emerging EV market.  Halimi’s mission to drive renewable energy forward for local communities is the heartbeat of Renewable Properties. 661: What is Boxing Day? Plus 12 Days of Christmas 2024 Edition

I hope you've all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and holiday season. As we welcome December 26, we find ourselves in the middle of “Boxing Day” — a tradition steeped in history and goodwill. It occurred to me recently that I actually don’t know why the heck the lesser-known (at least here in the US) holiday of Boxing Day exists. If you’ve ever asked yourself the same question, well today’s mini-sode will make you smarter! Stemming from Victorian times, this holiday on the day after Christmas, was a way of expressing gratitude to Servants for their year of service!  Today, the celebration extends to sport events, charity runs, and continued exchange of gifts.  As we continue into the festive season, I’m excited to carry on my annual '12 Days of Christmas' tradition - this year it’s called “The Influencer List”.  Each day, I’ll connect you with a new thought leader (Influencer) that is helping re-write the narrative on climate & energy in 2024 with their innovative ideas and climate action stories. Some names might be familiar, some new, but all are worth following as they continue pushing the boundaries of storytelling and innovation in driving climate action. So, keep an eye on our LinkedIn posts each day through January 6th. I’d recommend you tap the notification bell on my Linkedin Profile (link below) so you get a mobile push each day when I publish the latest story.   Stay with us on this wonderful journey as we welcome an exciting new year of innovation and climate action. And let me know who YOU would have added to the list.  We’ll be creating a more broad-reaching influencer matrix over on www.resourcelabs.co http://www.resourcelabs.co during the month of January. 660: Why care about COP28? A Recap with Nathan Jovanelly, Brad Stutzman, Elizabeth Andrews, Tito Jankowski, Steve Anglin

The recent wrap-up of COP28 in Dubai has catalyzed a renewed sense of urgency and reflection on the global efforts to address climate change. A key takeaway emerged from the event: the world is finally willing to say outloud “we need to chart a definitive course to wean ourselves off fossil fuels!” Moving beyond the main headlines and chatter, the real progress is found in the collective efforts of disparate stakeholders working towards a common purpose - and as the Chamber of Commerce noted, the real work will be done in the halls of private industry.  Despite initial controversy around the oil-rich UAE hosting COP28 and the fossil fuel executive presiding over it, the unfolding narrative proved compelling. The UAE and other Middle Eastern nations demonstrated a renewed interest and commitment to the global energy transition, underscoring their crucial role in the energy transition by supporting a broad-sweeping agreement signed by 200 nations committing to a 2050 deadline for alternatives to a fossil-fueled society. Today’s conversation was live-broadcast on Wednesday December 20th, and we’re borrowing our “Industry Pulse” monicker from our PowerUp Live stage as co-hosts Nate Jovanelly and Nico Johnson intend to continue this as a series looking at the expert sentiments underlying the trends and headlines that are driving the narrative around Climate Action. This discourse provides a detailed account of COP28 through the experiences of our panelists who attended the event in-person: Elizabeth Andrews, CDO at New Energy Nexus, Steve Anglin, CEO of Utopio, Brad Stutzman, Founder & CEO of O3 Energy, and Tito Jankowski, CEO of AirMiners.  Everyone attends these events with their own agenda: network, raise awareness, raise money, get “in the room” where it happens!  The discussion offers a look at COP28 from quite different perspectives while tying together their observations into one theme - why should those of us back in the ‘real world’ give a d* about whether or not these proceedings have meaning for our day-to-day lives? Tune in and discover for yourself.
