SOLVED: AMERICA'S UNKNOWN CHILD, "THE BOY IN THE BOX" A murder mystery that has gripped Philadelphia for 65 years has been solved. America's unknown child, "The Boy in the Box," now has a name and criminal charges could still be filed. A child was found murdered, stuffed in a box and abandoned in Philadelphia decades ago. The body of the 4-to-6-year-old was found discarded along Susquehanna Road in a bassinet box in February 1957. The victim would eventually become known as "America's Unknown Child." On 11/28/2021, for the first time, the Philadelphia Police Department said they have uncovered the boy's name. Investigations confirmed police know the boy's name after years and years of DNA analysis, cross-referenced with genealogical information. The identity will be released next week. Joseph Duncan will be remembered in the public space for his crimes; however, he was more than the serial killer of the news stories and attempts at documenting his life in print media. He was also an intelligent, articulate and sensitive person who endured many brutal and transforming experiences. His actions ruined people's lives, yet during his rampage he would see himself as an instrument of justice against a world that had ruined his own. It was only in the end of his killing spree that he clearly saw his own deception and allowed himself to be captured. In The Fifth Nail, with Duncan's reflections, we learn the workings of his mind and a significant amount of his personal history. In his confessions, he relates the transformative brutality of his incarceration and reveals details of the crimes for which he was arrested and sentenced to death. DECADES-OLD MYSTERY OF SOMERTON MAN SOLVED - A TRUE CRIME AND COKE QUICKIE The Tamám Shud case, also known as the Mystery of the Somerton Man, is a partially solved case of an unidentified man found dead on 1 December 1948 on The Somerton Park beach, just south of Adelaide South Australia. The case is named after the Persian phrase tamám shud, meaning "is over" or "is finished", which was printed on a scrap of paper found months later in the fob pocket of the man's trousers. The scrap had been torn from the final page of a copy of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, authored by 12th century poet Omar Khayyam Tamám was misspelt as Tamán in many early reports, and this error has often been repeated, leading to confusion about the name in the media. Following a public appeal by police, the book from which the page had been torn was located. On the inside back cover, detectives read through indentations left from previous handwriting – a local telephone number, another unidentified number, and text that resembled a coded message. The text has not been deciphered or interpreted in a way that satisfies authorities on the case. The case has been considered, since the early stages of the police investigation, "one of Australia's most profound mysteries". There has been intense speculation ever since regarding the identity of the victim, the cause of his death, and the events leading up to it. Public interest in the case remains significant for several reasons: the death occurred at a time of heightened international tensions following the beginning of the Cold War; the apparent involvement of a secret code; the possible use of an undetectable poison; and the inability of authorities to identify the dead man. It has taken a full decade, but we may soon learn more about the final moments in the life of 25-year-old Shannan Gilbert, who disappeared from a beach community on May 1, 2010, on Long Island, New York. The Suffolk County Police Department has been ordered to release a recording and transcript of a 911 call Gilbert made before she vanished. The recording, described by the former Suffolk County Chief of Detectives Dominick Varrone as a panicked call for help, was made at 4:51 a.m. on May 1. Gilbert, a sex worker who had gone to a client's house in a gated community known as Oak Beach, reportedly told a 911 operator that "There's someone after me … they're trying to kill me." Varrone said two male voices are also heard in the background. By the time police responded to the call an hour later, Shannan Gilbert had disappeared. Her body and possessions were recovered in nearby marshland a year and a half later in December 2011. John Ray, an attorney hired by Gilbert's mother, Mari Gilbert, sued to obtain the 911 call as part of a wrongful death action in 2012. Lawyers for the Suffolk County Police Department have long fought the release, arguing that it would jeopardize its ongoing investigation. Describing his murders as being "some of my darkest fantasies becoming my reality", Berdella pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the first degree murder of one of his victims, Larry Pearson, in August 1988, and would later plead guilty to one further charge of first degree murder, and four charges of second degree murder in December 1988. He died of a heart attack while incarcerated at the Missouri State Penitentiary in October 1992. THE TORTURE AND MURDER OF KELLY ANNE BATES James Patterson Smith had a violent history. In his 40s, he started dating 14-year-old Kelly Anne Bates. When Kelly was 17, over the period of 4 weeks, Smith gouged her eyes, scalded her skin, partially scalped her, mutilated and killed her. The pathologist in charge of the case described her injuries as the worst he had ever seen. Smith was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1997. JACK THE STRIPPER AKA THE HAMMERSMITH NUDE MURDERS The Hammersmith nude murders is the name of a series of six murders in West London, England, in 1964 and 1965. The victims, all prostitutes, were found undressed in or near the River Thames, leading the press to nickname the killer Jack the Stripper (a reference to "Jack the Ripper"). Two earlier murders, committed in West London in 1959 and 1963, have also been linked by some investigators to the same perpetrator. Despite "intense media interest and one of the biggest manhunts in Scotland Scotland's Yard's history" the case is unsolved. ED GEIN "THE CORPSE COLLECTOR" Edward Theodore Gein (August 27, 1906 – July 26, 1984), also known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, was an American convicted murderer and body snatcher. Gein's crimes, committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin, gathered widespread notoriety in 1957 after authorities discovered he had exhumed corpses from local graveyards and fashioned trophies and keepsakes from their bones and skin. Gein also confessed to killing two women: tavern owner Mary Hogan in 1954 and hardware store owner Bernice Worden in 1957. Gein was initially found unfit to stand trial and confined to a mental health facility. By 1968, he was judged competent to stand trial; he was found guilty of the murder of Worden, but he was found legally insane and was remanded to a psychiatric institution. He died at Mendota Mental Health Institute of respiratory failure, on July 26, 1984, aged 77. He is buried next to his family in the Plainfield Cemetery, in a now-unmarked grave.
