Once upon a time there was “romance” (stories with happy endings), “tragedy” (not so happy), and “comedy” (funny).  Now we have 2000 sub-genres most of which are hyphenated blends of each other.  Are genres serving any purpose anymore? Has the catalog become its own worst enemy?
