Blog-March 20, 2024—9-10—Working on Wellness Wednesday
The guest list that we have had for a Working on Wellness Wednesday show is interesting to not only us---but to our listeners.

Avera—Sanford----State Health Directors----one-on-one chiropractic care---and what use to be Sioux Falls is now----State-wide---with Working on Wellness---and those that often want to give up.

Today---Dr. Christpher Hurley---MD—Gastroenterologist with the Avera Medical Group talk to us about concerns people have on colon cancer. How common is it---who is at risk---when do you need to start getting a colonoscopy---and how old can you be---what are the signs and symptoms---and can a colonoscopy be lifesaving.

My wife Carolyn was a colonoscopy nurse for a number of years---and I hear from time to time just how good a nurse she was.

Dr. Hurley added that this morning.

If it hadn’t been for Carolyn---I might not be here today---she convinced me to do a colonoscopy---and I took it from there –and in my radio show---the Doctor decided we could go from my start of the procedure –with a radio-play-by-play on what I was doing—what I had to take---pictures were taken of me lying in my patient room----no pictures during the procedure—but after.

We were told that 300+ people took the cue from me and got a colonoscopy---we did interviews before the procedure in our studio----and then days after. When I followed up 5 years later we were plugged in again.

Today as I looked at the fact that generally those 70 or 75 can usually do get a colonoscopy—that perhaps with me being just over the age—if I should get a procedure. We may do that ---my physician would have to be clued in----and if its needed ---we could be ready for another live-saving event. Stayed tuned---but if you need a colonoscopy ----get it you don’t want colon cancer—but check your family history.

Mary Michaels—AARP may her first visit in a month---we covered the ABC’s or sorts for what she is doing.

Get Your Bike Ready to ride---it’s almost bike season—and AARP South Dakota and Falls Area Bicyclists want to get you and your bike ready for the season with monthly group rides April 20-May 18-June 15.  Yes bike safety is a big deal---they have event information and links to register on their website at www.aarp.org/sd

Electric bikes will soon be allowed in Sioux Falls on the trails---the City Council passed an amendment allowing class II electric bikes onto City trails. The bikes can travel up  TO speeds of 20 mph with throttle and pedal assistance. Class III e-bikes can do 28 miles per hour—are still prohibited—as are electric scooters and other motorized vehicles.

   Also---Alarm Alerts—Peer to Peer Scams

Payment apps like Venmo or CashApp to split a bill or send money to a friend and some people even use them for traditional shopping. However there are inherent risks that exist that everyone should know about and keep aware.

Dr. Allen Unruh introduced us to Joyce Liebrow---who has been seeing Dr. Unruh since May 16 of last year---he got a hug. As she said she had no more pain and her knee felt fantastic. Her knee was bone on bone—had injections for four years and in 2021 only had one injection. She was scheduled for a total knee replacement---her sister had an amputation and the phantom nerve pain was so terrible she was screaming. Her death certificate said she died of an overdose.

Joyce loves to walk and exercise replacement—until she called the Unruh office. 25% of the adult population has a bad knee—every pound a person is overweight is 4 lbs on the knee.

What we heard was how it has worked—what she is doing—and how happy she is to be on the mend. We’ll check with her again in 3 months to see how she is doing.

We closed the show with an update on the HELP LINE with Wendy Dooley---

Among the topics---celebrating volunteers next month at our Spirit of Volunteerism on Thursday April 18th . Tickets are available at helplinecenter.org/sva.

Our It’s YOUR Business Show does care about health care----and so do those that talk with us.
