This is Kelly Orchard’s Apple A Day. Sixty Seconds on wisdom, success and personal growth. Would you consider yourself to be an open-minded leader? I have worked with so many people who are closed minded in many of their beliefs, which are most often a product of what they experienced in the past. When we talk about leading with an open-mind, it isn’t meant to encourage you to throw your beliefs out the window or cast them aside. Leading with an open mind will help you look at all sides of an argument, a way to go about finding solutions and get out of the way of conflict, whether in business, teambuilding or in your own relationships.
According to an article from “SmartBlog on Leadership, Jane Perdue shares several ways to lead with an open mind:
- Stop the power trip, Stay attuned and seek out feedback from others.
- Nurture tolerance. Don’t be so quick to believe that other opinions are wrong or foolish.
- Think big and synthesize new and bold ideas from others. Don’t strangle them because it goes against your conventional wisdom.
For you to be an effective leader in any area of your life, you’ll find much more success when you lead with an open mind.
