Counties across California now have to gear up for an overhaul of the state’s mental health system – this after voters passed Proposition 1 by a really thin margin.

Proposition 1 also changes the state’s Mental Health Services Act – a similar ballot initiative that voters passed two decades ago. Governor Newsom says money from Proposition 1 will start rolling out in the fall.

For more on all this, we’re joined by Doctor Thomas Insel. He’s a neuroscientist and psychiatrist based in San Francisco. He’s also the former director of the National Institute of Mental Health and author of the book “Healing: Our Path from Mental Illness to Mental Health.”
