There never was and still is not a standardized Lakotan calendar that lists days, weeks, months, and years. The closest was a “waniyetu wiyawapi,” a winter count. The earliest winter count was a hide drawing of a single event to represent the name of a year. But there were multiple winter counts and winter count keepers, and often each depicted a different event for a given year. This makes sense, because each winter count depicted events that were experienced by one or more members of a tiyoshpaye.
