Items from past issues of The Clarke County Democrat September 1959 64 Years Ago Clarke County High School and the Grove Hill Graded School opened with a combined enrollment of 720 students. Jim Payne who signed a grant-in-aid scholarship with Auburn has started football practice with the freshman squad. He was a star quarterback on both the Bullpup and Bulldog teams. Miss Ann Nettles was the new band director for the Clarke County High School Band. The band had 35 to 40 members. Work halted on the new Jackson Lock and Dam when painters and other workers went on strike....
