Liane is the organizer of the Massage Championships here in Canada and wanted to speak to Canadian therapists and educate them on what this event is truly about. For Liane who is a passionate therapist and always looking to be better, it’s about the experience of meeting and learning from therapists from all over the world, and building community and networking with other passionate professionals. Agyness is a client and a hair stylist that is on the verge of taking the leap to open her own salon. Sandy is back for a third time because once again his career has taken a shift and he wanted to come talk about it. When he was first on the couch we talked about his unique style of treating, he returned to talk about a new way of assessing which levelled up his practice working primarily with golfers, and this time he’s back and working in education and giving back to the profession he’s been a part of for almost 3 decades. Ryan is a mobile massage therapist who lives with his family on a farm north of the city. Like many others in our profession, he got into the manual therapy world after being a patient himself and going through his own rehabilitation process. He wanted to combine manual therapy with his personal training experience to help people dealing with pain or injury to get back to living. At the same time he needed to make sure he was supporting his family. Jen hung out on our couch years ago to talk to us about having a trauma informed practice and what that means. At the time she was working at a clinic that didn’t necessarily allow her to fully practice in the way she wanted to. Fast forward to 2024 and Jen is back. She has taken the leap and is now running her own practice where she can allow her patients who are dealing with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and any sort of trauma or mental health issues to have a place to feel safe and to get the therapy they need. Alison is a RMT in Ontario and a very good friend of 2RMTs and a Mic and Massage Therapy Media. As you can imagine, when we heard that someone we cared about was going through cancer treatment, we felt helpless. Sue was a guest on our podcast way back when we first started and we have watched her go through numerous career shifts which included going inactive as a RMT. Robin is a Massage Therapist and Certified Lymphedema Therapist in Alberta. She has dedicated her career to educating patients, practitioners, and even doctors, about the lymphatic system and why we should care about it. Janet is a RMT and educator in Ontario who has been focussed on oncology massage for ten years. She is one of the authors of the book, Oncology Massage An Integrative Approach to Cancer Care. We met Simone through the conference circuit. She is the founder of the Fascia Training Institute and teaches courses to massage therapists and other body workers about fascia and concussion recovery. Her path to get here was definitely unconventional. She entered a physical therapy program in the US, and is certified in concussion management. She studied science, worked with mentors, took courses in all types of therapy and body work, and learned to connect the dots to help her better understand her own body, injuries, and recovery. Sam is the owner of the Osteopathic Lyceum and as an educator and owner of a school, he has dedicated his career to really understanding the fundamentals of education, the needs of learners, and of course the policy side of things. Keeley is a RMT in Ontario and also identifies as non-binary. They have had experiences that made them realize that all people could benefit from receiving education about understanding commonly known and less commonly know sexual orientations as well as commonly and less commonly known gender identities. Their courses provide definitions and insight into the diversity that exists within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and how those of us working in healthcare can be sure we are being respectful and inclusive. Ken was brought to our couch by one of our regular guests, Nicki, because she said he’s got some stories and would make an interesting guest. She was right and Ken did not disappoint. He is an illusionist who holds a very interesting (and terrifying) world record. He taught us what a card mechanic is, showed us some close up magic, and told us the story about when he almost lost everything. Devin and his wife decided to go back to school and become Massage Therapists together. After working at some chain spas, Devin thought he would be more successful if he and his wife had their own business. What he’s noticing now is that clients seem to prefer to book with his wife and he’s wondering how to get busy as a male therapist in the south. Ann was hired to supervise a student massage clinic at a college in her town. She was very excited about this opportunity because she loves to teach and is passionate about improving the quality of education for future therapists. She quickly realized gaps in the knowledge the students coming into clinic had and was happy to help them fine tune their skills. What happened next was not what she expected. Due to red tape and her official job title, Ann was eventually walked out of that job and she is not happy about it.
