In today's episode, I delve into the destructive nature of victimhood, exploring how it strips away your sense of agency and control. Discover the transformative impact of recognizing your choices even in seemingly dire circumstances. In this video, I explore a crucial aspect of seeking advice for creative projects. While feedback from the audience is valuable, the essence of process and methods should come from practitioners – those who've been in the trenches creating. It may sound like basic advice, but it's surprising how many coaches and consultants offer insights without hands-on experience. Learning from books is essential, but there's unmatched wisdom when advice is rooted in direct experience. In a world weighed down by its challenges, finding solace in art becomes a powerful way to make sense of the complexities and experience catharsis. Join me in this episode as we delve into Charles Bukowski’s haunting poem, 'Dinosauria We.' This chilling piece serves as both a forewarning and a stark reflection of the fears and realities many of us grapple with. While it doesn't provide solutions to the world's problems, the poem prompts deep reflection and fosters a connection to those who share similar sentiments. In sharing this impactful work, we acknowledge the importance of collective introspection and the potential to prevent the dystopian future it portrays. The responsibility lies with us, and by discussing this poem, we contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the world we want to create. Let's explore the profound impact of 'Dinosauria We' and discuss the ways it encourages reflection and inspires action. Together, we can navigate the complexities of our world and strive for a future that aligns with our shared vision. Join me as I delve into a common struggle faced by artists near the culmination of their projects—the Last 20% Syndrome. Every artist, including myself, encounters this hurdle, a phase where you're almost at the finish line, yet the remaining tasks seem tiresome and mind-numbing. In this video, I discuss how this syndrome arises as artists approach the conclusion of their creative endeavors. It's that crucial moment when the groundwork is laid, and you're left with the meticulous and often less glamorous execution. Whether it's the final grammar edit in writing or refining the narrative in a film, this stage can be daunting and often neglected by up and coming artists. I share a recent experience working with a documentary filmmaker grappling with a nearly complete project filled with remarkable moments but marred by elements confusing the narrative. While artists may resist this last stretch, it's a vital phase, particularly for those aiming to capture audience attention beyond mere hobbyists. Grinding through this final 20% of the creative process is essential for aspiring artists seeking success with their audience. Understanding and embracing this phase could transform the experience and make it more enjoyable over time. While I admit I'm still learning, each project brings me closer to embracing this essential part of the artistic journey. Join me as we explore and understand the Last 20% Syndrome, its significance in artistic endeavors, and the pursuit of completing and perfecting our creative works. In this episode, I raise a genuine question that's been on my mind and possibly on yours too: Why don't libraries offer more streaming shows to the public, given their role as custodians of knowledge and resources? Libraries have transformed over time, adapting to digital advancements by providing e-books, audiobooks, and even introducing platforms like Kanopy for streaming movies and TV shows. However, despite these progressive steps, it's intriguing that not all streaming content is readily available through these platforms. The question arises: Why the limitation? Is it simply a matter of studios being reluctant to share their entire catalog, possibly driven by a motive of profit and subscription-based services? Is it solely greed motivating this practice? I'm genuinely open to exploring alternative reasons or explanations if they exist. Could there be other factors contributing to this discrepancy? And more importantly, why do we, as consumers and users of these platforms, accept such limitations if it is indeed driven by profit motives? Join me in this reflection and discussion and let's ponder and share our perspectives on this intriguing topic, examining the dynamics between content access, profit motives, and the public's right to information and entertainment. Your insights and thoughts on this matter are greatly appreciated as we explore this ongoing debate. Welcome to an insightful episode diving into the layers of dialogue essential for engaging storytelling in both novels and screenplays. Join me as I discuss the three crucial levels every dialogue should encompass to avoid being on the nose and to keep your audience captivated. We explore: 1) What’s said: Characters' explicit dialogue, the surface-level words spoken to achieve their immediate goals, big or small. 2) What’s behind what’s said: Delving deeper beneath the spoken words, uncovering the hidden intentions and manipulative nuances within conversations. 3) What’s untold: Beyond the immediate dialogue, discovering the subconscious motivations buried within characters' desires, often unknown even to the characters themselves. Utilizing an example like "Aren’t I a good friend to you?" we unravel how this seemingly innocent question can harbor multiple layers of meaning. From a straightforward query to a hidden plea for a favor, and ultimately, an expression of the fear of loneliness buried in the character's subconscious. And after watching, I challenge you to craft your own dialogue lines to explore the hidden depths beyond the spoken words. Share your lines and their multifaceted meanings in the comments below, allowing us all to engage in this enriching writing exercise together. More importantly, I hope this helps your writing. Welcome back to another week of my vlog, where I share insights into my creative journey, aiming to inspire and provide actionable takeaways for all of you. This week, I've made significant headway with my upcoming movie's script. From bullet point #27 in the outline to #65, progress is evident, even though each point doesn't hold equal weight. With a total of 117 points, there's still a substantial portion to cover, but the detailed outline is proving invaluable in keeping story details at the forefront of my mind while I continue to churn out more pages. An intriguing thought that surfaced this week revolves around the possibility of transforming this lengthy script into a limited series. The concept stems from the idea of a 3-hour movie with potential intermissions, but ultimately, considering the trilogy concept, why not divide it into three seasons, each consisting of two episodes? While it's a fun concept to ponder, it's not yet set in stone. The project will undoubtedly take the shape it requires. While my primary focus remains on the script, I've also been contemplating updating the pitch deck, albeit considering this post-script version. Additionally, I've been collaborating on a filmmaking how-to book with a ghostwriter, while my second novel and a short film project have taken a backseat for the time being. This week involved an extensive consultation on a documentary, a project where the creative journey has been fulfilling for the artist but requires that final 20% of work left to resonate with audiences. Cutting down the documentary to make it accessible for audiences has been challenging for the artist, a common struggle of letting go of beloved content for the sake of the project's coherence. I stumbled upon an intriguing TikTok tutorial utilizing AI for video creation (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8kHhVLa/), prompting contemplation about the balance between AI tools and their potential misuse as shortcuts to success. Moreover, I discuss the value of transparency in life, mentioning the openness of sharing a therapy session with a friend and the transformative experience it offered, advocating for radical transparency to address societal problems. Finally, I touch upon the unsettling trend of job expectations pushing employees to clear work ahead of vacations and the habit of elongating shows beyond their prime. Join me in this diverse discussion encompassing creative endeavors, personal insights, and societal observations. Your thoughts and engagement are always welcomed. Stay inspired and keep creating! While many would find this blasphemous, I find there are many benefits of listening to podcasts at 1.4x speed. It's not exactly twice the speed, but it's definitely faster than the standard pace. I find this approach particularly advantageous because it enables me to consume a greater number of podcasts in a shorter time frame. More importantly, I've noticed that I retain information more effectively using this method. You see, many speakers tend to be verbose and include pauses in their conversations. By increasing the playback speed, I can connect with the ideas more rapidly and maintain engagement throughout the podcast. I’ve taken this time-saving principle and applied it to the podcast editing process. I’ll guide you through the setup of Adobe Audition's audio editing software to achieve the ideal playback speed, ensuring that you can work efficiently. By default, increasing the playback speed often results in that infamous chipmunk effect, making the audio unintelligible. My method, on the other hand, allows you to listen faster while still comprehending the content. And while some may physically stretch the audio to speed it up, this method can cause timing issues during edits, forcing you to rework the entire episode. My approach eliminates this hassle. BTW, here's the prior episode I made about my podcast methodology: https://youtu.be/CPTeDsvjBI8 Unlock the potential of streamlined podcast editing in this episode. In this concise yet invaluable lesson, I delve into the fundamentals of lavalier microphone placement to ensure it captures a person's voice with utmost clarity. While it may seem like second nature to some, it's surprising how often even seasoned professionals miss the mark. This is particularly common among podcasters who rely on lavalier microphones for their session recordings. If you found this tutorial beneficial and would like a comprehensive exploration of the best practices for lavalier microphones, don't hesitate to let me know in the comments below. Your feedback and suggestions drive the content I create, and I’m more than eager to dive deeper into this topic in future episodes. So, stay tuned, and let's master the art of pristine voice recording together! Don't forget to like, comment, share and subscribe if you haven't yet! Welcome to the final step in our website development series! If you missed any of the previous steps, you can catch up by checking out the playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ8zDLRFbI6j-dwljQN0lcgE. In a nutshell, we've covered a lot in this series. Step one was all about outlining your website, step two involved transferring those ideas onto a blank website, and step three was about refining the design to match your vision. Now, in step 4, we're crossing the finish line. This episode isn't specific to any website platform like Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress. Instead, it provides a broad perspective on the process. While there are countless step-by-step tutorials out there, not many take a holistic approach. This step is often the most trial-and-error phase of the entire process. In this episode, I'll share the challenges I encountered and how I overcame them, including: - Creating contact forms, from simple to more complex ones. - Embedding YouTube playlists instead of single videos. - Ensuring the mobile version of the website looks just as polished. - Maintaining consistency throughout all pages. - Optimizing each page for a tidy appearance and faster loading. - Ensuring all buttons work as intended. - Integrating a sign-up form for my Substack newsletter at http://philsvitek.substack.com. - Making last-minute adjustments to improve the website (for me, it was adding an Altruism page). - Finalizing all the necessary photos and assets. - Revising elements that seemed good in one section but were excessive for the rest (in my case, it was my gallery of people). I hope this mini-series has guided you in approaching your website development or revamp. If you're just starting out, keep it simple with a portfolio, a bio, and a contact page. As you gain confidence in website design, you can expand your site. Remember, there are plenty of fantastic tutorials on platforms like YouTube, and Google is your friend when you have questions. BTW, here's the WordPress Elementor Tutorial that I watched: https://youtu.be/NdGfSifOPu4?si=yGDVyvAvu1iy3msf. You can also find skilled professionals to help you on platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, or Codeable (this one is only if you're using WordPress). Feel free to leave your questions and thoughts in the comments, and don't forget to subscribe for more helpful content. Lastly, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could explore my finished and polished website at http://philsvitek.com. There's a wealth of resources and information waiting for you, all intended to assist you in various ways. Thanks you!
