Dave Jacobs, a seasoned healthcare leader, combined his vast knowledge of geriatric care and passionate advocacy for senior in-home care to co-found Homethrive, a family caregiving solution that combines expert live assistance and navigation with 24/7 digital resources to help caregivers thrive at work and at home. His expertise stems from fifteen years as a senior executive at Medline Industries, a $25 billion healthcare products company. There, he developed a firsthand appreciation for the importance of seniors maintaining independence at home and the many challenges faced by them and their family caregivers. Presently, Dave serves on the Board of Directors of a $500 million privately held consumer products company. With 72% of employees having some caregiving responsibilities, companies are starting to recognize that offering a caregiver support benefit is a must-have for supporting employee wellbeing, productivity, and retention. And the rapidly aging population in the U.S. also combined with many people staying in the workforce longer means that more and more individuals will find themselves caring for a parent, partner, or friend, while also navigating work, life, and even their own health situations. Tune in for our conversation with Dave Jacobs, co-CEO and co-founder of Homethrive, on the complexities of modern caregiving and why it’s time for employers in the U.S. to offer inclusive caregiving benefits.

Eager to help, Steve invented a device called IndeeLift, a “people picker upper” that safely and quickly lifts a person back to their feet after they’ve fallen, allowing them to quickly resume their day with dignity and independence. Today, IndeeLift is helping thousands of people across the globe to turn most falls into a non-event. IndeeLift is a life-changing tool for seniors, as well as those with neuromuscular diseases such Multiple Sclerosis, Myositis, Parkinson's Disease, etc. IndeeLift’s floor lifts are specifically designed to be used individually at home, or with the help of professional healthcare caregivers. After losing two loved ones to the disease, Cheryl Hogrefe received her own Alzheimer’s diagnosis within the very same year as her mother’s passing. Cheryl was diagnosed on December 4, 2016, which is when her husband (Ron) knew it was time to put all those years of watching Cheryl serve as a full-time, primary caregiver, to use. It was his turn to step up. For the next 6 years, Ron watched as Cheryl’s cognitive abilities slowly decreased from a normal score of 26 to score of 15 (moderate cognitive impairment) by spring of 2022. Relentless to change Cheryl’s fate, the couple vetted several clinical trial options in hopes for new treatment only to be rejected time and time again due to falling just outside qualification criteria. But just hours after their final rejection came their first sign of hope – a clinical trial opportunity that could offer Cheryl a fighting chance. On May 4, 2022, the papers were signed for Cheryl to participate in the TB006 Phase II clinical trial, beginning the infusions within a week’s time. By the time of her next cognitive assessment on August 5th, Cheryl and Ron would learn that her previously consistent decline had stopped dead in its tracks. By February 2, 2023, just 9 months after beginning infusions, her cognitive assessment score has begun to show signs of increasing. While it’s a clinical trial with long-term outcomes to yet be determined, it’s bringing much hope to Cheryl and Ron.

Elizabeth Pizzarello was born a sighted child in the Bronx, New York. She grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Cedar Crest College, in Pennsylvania. Just weeks before graduating, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disorder that contributed to her eventual blindness. After ten years of living blind, in 2012 Elizabeth was the beneficiary of a newly developed lens implant procedure with miraculous results. The surgery took her from a state of complete blindness to the limited use of one eye. The inspiration for writing this memoir came from that moment of profound gratitude when Elizabeth experienced her newly regained sight post surgery. Elizabeth’s poem “WOW” was composed during the first month of her sight being restored. The ability to see the incredible world around her again had such a profound impact that she was compelled to write the poem in an attempt to distill the emotional magnitude of her journey. That is why the poem occupies such a prominent position at the beginning of her book. This book recounts moments from her story about going from life as a sighted child, through early adulthood, when she first received the devastating diagnosis of the disease that led to the gradual reduction of her sight that ended in blindness. But going blind and being blind are not the same thing, nor is going blind just about learning to live in darkness. It is Elizabeth’s desire to explain the psychological complexity of that transition as well as share the incredible twist of fate that enabled her to have a portion of her vision restored a decade later. Elizabeth is working on a collection of children’s stories that embody themes of compassion, determination, resilience, and pushing past limiting beliefs based on the lessons she learned from her experience as a disabled individual.
