The agreement aims to maintain reliability, support economic development, and reduce rates for all customers. Georgia Power plans to add 2,600 megawatts of power to meet growing demand, utilizing gas turbines, power purchasing agreements, and expanding battery energy storage and distributed energy resources. This decision was made following the emergence of new evidence pointing towards the involvement of another vehicle in the incident that left a 78-year-old cyclist with life-threatening injuries on March 3. Initially, Abbott was arrested based on eyewitness accounts and physical evidence at the scene. However, further investigation revealed indications of a second vehicle's involvement, leading to the reconsideration of charges against Abbott. In lieu of the HOST, the Cherokee Legislative Delegation approved a proposal to raise the hotel/motel excise tax in unincorporated Cherokee County from 6% to 8%. Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: PAY RAISES FOR TEACHERS AND STATE WORKERS SAIL THROUGH GEORGIA HOUSE The Georgia House of Representatives has approved the fiscal 2025 state budget, coming in at $36.1 billion. This budget includes substantial pay raises for teachers and other state employees, made possible by a significant surplus. The new budget, set to come into effect on July 1, represents an increase of 11% compared to the previous year. A 4% pay raise is slated for the majority of state employees, with additional targeted raises planned for agencies experiencing high turnover rates. Public school teachers can expect a $2,500 raise. Furthermore, the budget has provisions for funding in education and healthcare sectors, addressing areas such as enrollment growth, school bus requirements, campus safety, and increases in Medicaid reimbursement. Following this approval, the budget will now proceed to the Georgia Senate STORY 2: CHEROKEE SCHOOLS ANNOUNCES MEDIA SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR Cherokee County School District honored Jennifer Cogdill, a media specialist at Woodstock High School, as the Library Media Specialist of the Year. Cogdill was chosen from a pool of nominees for her exceptional contributions to education. She was presented with the award and received a $500 Visa gift card, plaque, and banner sponsored by Credit Union of Georgia. Cogdill's leadership, collaboration with teachers, and innovative programs have elevated teaching and learning at Woodstock High School. She advances to the regional competition and has previously been recognized for her achievements, including being named the Woodstock Zone Media Specialist of the Year. Cogdill's dedication to education extends beyond her role as a media specialist, as she also serves on the school's instructional leadership team and sponsors student organizations. STORY 3: WOODSTOCK LOOKS TO ADDRESS AFFORDABLE HOUSING Woodstock's Mayor, Michael Caldwell, is actively addressing the pressing issue of housing affordability as a member of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Local Leadership Housing Action Committee. The city has formulated a plan to conduct a thorough residential density audit alongside a review of its accessory dwelling unit (ADU) ordinance. The residential density audit is aimed at gaining an in-depth understanding of the potential for current and future developments. On the other hand, the ADU review is designed to strike a balance between the growing demand for ADUs and the preservation of neighborhood character. In order to fund these initiatives, Woodstock is pursuing grant funding. This comes in light of the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) reporting that housing prices are increasing at a rate that outpaces wages in metro Atlanta, leading to a shortage of affordable housing units. The next committee is set to begin on March 14. Interested individuals can visit atlantaregional.org. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. This initiative is aimed at bolstering road safety measures and decreasing the number of severe injuries and fatalities on the road. The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a design services agreement, which costs around $562,000. The plan's funding includes a substantial federal grant of $450,000, which will be used to analyze traffic data and crash reports. The findings from these analyses will help shape improvements and policy recommendations for the countywide transportation system. The remaining amount is expected to be equally shared between the county and participating cities. The county will cover 67.11% of this cost through funds obtained from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The study is projected to be completed within approximately 12 months. Commercial: INGLES 5 STORY 6: NEXT STEP MINISTRIES WITHDRAWS APPLICATION Next Step Ministries, a Cherokee County nonprofit serving individuals with disabilities, withdrew its request to construct a second building after months of deliberation by commissioners. The organization sought to build a 10,920 square-foot facility next to its existing one, but faced opposition from some residents concerned about the size and impact on the rural area. Next Step cited concerns over renovation costs and ethical considerations regarding their existing building's appearance. This withdrawal marks the second time the nonprofit has withdrawn its expansion plans. Despite setbacks, Next Step remains committed to serving the community and exploring other avenues for expansion. STORY 7: DEFENSE LAWYER IN TRUMP CASE DEFENDS BID TO DISQUALIFY FULTON D.A. WILLIS Ashleigh Merchant, the defense attorney for co-defendant Michael Roman in the Fulton County election interference case against ex-President Donald Trump, recently testified before a state Senate committee. Merchant's allegations revolve around Willis's failure to disclose her romantic relationship with lead prosecutor Nathan Wade, who was appointed for this case. She accused Willis of financial gain from both the contract with Wade and their personal relationship. Furthermore, Merchant questioned the oversight of Willis' utilization of public funds provided by the county commission. She also criticized Wade's billing procedures and restated prior allegations about his qualifications and the timeline of his relationship with Willis. Willis, in response, defended herself by stating that she and Wade shared trip expenses, thereby denying any conflict of interest. Senate Minority Whip Harold Jones challenged Merchant's claims, emphasizing Wade's efficacy in securing indictments and guilty pleas. The committee is now awaiting a ruling from Fulton Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee regarding the disqualification motion. We’ll have closing comments after this. CTL SCRIPT/ Top Stories of February 24th From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Saturday, February 24th and Happy 73rd Birthday to musician George Thorogood. ***02.24.24 – BIRTHDAY – GEORGE THOROGOOD*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. __ __ We’ll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you’re looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! COMMERCIAL: CU OF GA STORY 1: THOMAS' POLITICAL AD DEEPFAKE BILL CLEARS GEORGIA HOUSE In a significant move, the Georgia House of Representatives has passed legislation criminalizing the use of AI-generated 'deepfakes' in political campaign ads. The bill, known as House Bill 986, was passed with a majority of 148-22 and aims to counter fraudulent election interference. Those found guilty of creating political deepfakes within 90 days of an election could face a prison sentence of two to five years and a fine of up to $50,000. The bill's chief sponsor, Rep. Brad Thomas, emphasized the need to protect legitimate political free speech while curtailing fraudulent practices. He clarified that the legislation targets "materially deceptive" video or audio deepfakes, with certain exceptions for satire, parody, artistic expression, and journalism. Here is Rep. Thomas speaking in support of the bill: *** 02.24.24 – BRAD THOMAS – SUPPORTING DEEP FAKE BILL*** Despite this, Rep. Charlice Byrd countered the bill, arguing that it encroaches on First Amendment rights. She drew parallels to the Sedition Acts of 1798 and 1918. Here is Rep. Byrd voicing her opposition to the bill: *** 02.24.24 – CHARLICE BYRD – AGAINST DEEP FAKE BILL*** Supporters believe it is essential for maintaining election integrity and promoting truth in advertising. The bill is now set for review by the state Senate. STORY 2: I-575 SET FOR MAJOR RESURFACING PROJECT Major changes are on the horizon for Interstate 575 in Cherokee County. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced plans to begin resurfacing work soon, following the awarding of a $56 million contract to C.W. Matthews, Inc. The project will cover about 20 miles of I-575 from I-75 in Cobb County to the Etowah River in Cherokee County. I-575, which sees over 100,000 vehicles daily, is a key route in Northwest Georgia. The resurfacing work is expected to commence within the next few months and is aimed at maintaining high-level operations as the surrounding area continues to grow. Both the highway and it’s on and offramps will be resurfaced. While lane closures are anticipated during the project, they will not occur between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Completion of the resurfacing is slated for December 31, 2024. Motorists are advised to anticipate delays, exercise caution, and lower their speed while traveling through work zones. For real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions, check 511ga.org or the Georgia 511 app. STORY 3: MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEER HONORED FOR LIFESAVING EFFORTS Nora Fett, a long-standing volunteer with Cherokee County Senior Services' Meals on Wheels program, has been honored for her lifesaving actions. While delivering meals on Dec. 6, Fett became concerned when a client didn't answer the door. She returned after another delivery to check on them and found them unresponsive in their home. She immediately called 911, and the client was treated at the hospital. This incident highlights Fett's dedication to the seniors she serves and exemplifies the impact of the Meals on Wheels program. Despite not residing in the county, Fett continues to commute every week from Cartersville to deliver meals. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. BREAK: CHEROKEE CHAMBER STORY 4: SIXES ROAD AND I-575 AREA TRANSPORTATION PLAN WILL BRING CHANGE TO CHEROKEE Cherokee County is set to witness significant transformations as local leaders hire a firm to create a comprehensive transportation plan for the I-575 and Sixes Road interchange area. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $255,105 agreement with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. for this purpose. Last year, a 180-day moratorium was imposed on new applications related to rezoning, development, or construction in this area. Since then, the county, Holly Springs, Woodstock, and the Cherokee Office of Economic Development have collaborated to select a consultant for the area plan. The cost of the study and plan will be shared among the county (at 60%) and the cities of Holly Springs and Woodstock. The interchange area covers 536 acres and includes about 235 tax parcels. The plan aims to scrutinize, develop, and recommend major and minor transportation improvement projects for the interchange area. The goal is to transform the southeast quadrant into a thriving workplace and employment center, while enhancing connectivity and mobility. The study, slated to begin in March, is expected to conclude in 15 months. Local leaders see this region as a potential regional center offering employment opportunities. STORY 5: CHEROKEE CITIES COULD BENEFIT FROM POTENTIAL SALES TAX REVENUE. HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW Cherokee County leaders have announced their plans to share potential Homestead Option Sales Tax capital funds with city governments if voters approve the new sales tax. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners recently voted unanimously to approve a resolution that solidifies their intent to distribute HOST capital funds among the county's participating municipalities. This decision comes after a series of town hall meetings in January and a vote on February 6 to call for a referendum for the potential implementation of a HOST in Cherokee County. The resolution has now been submitted to the Georgia General Assembly, aiming to include a referendum for a HOST on the ballot for the November 5 election. If approved, at least 80% of the HOST proceeds will be used to roll back property taxes on homesteaded property. The county estimates that a new 1% sales tax could generate $63.3 million a year, with about $12.5 million going towards capital funding - $8.1 million for the county and $4.4 million for the cities. COMMERCIAL: HENRY COUNTY SHERIFF – INGLES 2 STORY 6: CONCEPT PLAN FOR 40-ACRE PARK IN HICKORY FLAT GETS APPROVED A 40-acre park is one step closer to becoming a reality in the Hickory Flat community, following the unanimous approval of a conceptual plan by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners. The plan includes a recreation center with a gymnasium, offices, an indoor walking track, meeting rooms, classrooms, and a fitness center. Outdoor amenities include two multipurpose artificial turf fields, a playground, a splash pad, a mile-long perimeter trail, a dog park, an event lawn with pavilions, a pickleball complex, and a community garden. The park, which will offer 528 parking spaces, is expected to cost around $43.4 million. The next steps involve identifying funding and establishing a development timeline. The park's master plan was developed based on public input, with trails, greenways, a playground, pickleball courts, and an indoor walking track among the top facility preferences. STORY 7: CHEROKEE MAKES PLANS FOR FORMER BUFFINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SITE Cherokee County is making strides towards expanding its fire services by repurposing a former elementary school building. The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners gave unanimous approval on February 20 to buy the old Buffington Elementary School property, located along Highway 20, for $1.2 million from the Cherokee County School District. The purchase of the nearly 10-acre site will be financed through the 2024 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds allocated for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, according to county records. Interestingly, the school site, which spans 9.88 acres, is situated next to a 3.19-acre parcel that the county already owns. The combined 13.07-acre area may serve various purposes, such as replacing Fire Station 29, housing a future fire safety and education building, or even potentially becoming the new location for the fire department's headquarters. The duo is accused of pilfering over $100,000 worth of merchandise from Target stores across four states. Their charges encompass violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. From September 1 to October 17, the women reportedly stole a variety of products ranging from skincare items and electronic devices to baby formula. Their alleged modus operandi included concealing goods in boxes and utilizing the aid of juveniles and accomplices. Hornea is now detained in Cherokee County jail, while Ionita has been apprehended elsewhere. It's also worth noting that Hornea is currently sought after in three different jurisdictions within Alabama. STORY 2: CHEROKEE COUNTY URGES DRIVERS NOT TO USE NEIGHBORHOOD AS DETOUR The intersection at Fate Conn Road and Heard Road, located near Canton, will remain closed until March 1 to facilitate roundabout construction. In response, Cherokee County officials are actively advising motorists not to use the adjacent Park Village Neighborhood as a shortcut. Official detour signs have been erected, directing traffic towards Lower Bethany Road and Old Highway 5. This initiative is designed to maintain safety for drivers, local residents, and the construction crew working on the project. For any queries or additional information about the detour, individuals are encouraged to reach out to the Cherokee County Roadway Capital Program at 678-493-6077. STORY 3: CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TAPS NEW SUPERINTENDENT In a recent development, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis has been officially appointed as the new Superintendent of the Cherokee County School District (CCSD). The school board's decision, taken on February 15, 2024, was a close one, with a 4-3 vote in favor of her appointment. Davis, who has been serving as the Superintendent of Henry County Schools, emerged as the sole candidate for the position on January 31. Her selection, however, has drawn varied responses from board members and the community at large. Advocates for Davis highlight her proven ability to enhance student achievement, while critics voice apprehensions about her leadership style and previous performance. Regardless of these differing views, the school board moved forward with the appointment, reinforcing the meticulousness of their selection process. Davis is expected to assume her position soon, taking over from the retiring Superintendent Brian Hightower. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. STORY 5: HUFSTETLER'S TAX CAP BILL CLEARS GEORGIA SENATE The Georgia State Senate has officially passed the Save Our Homes bill, SB 349, with a significant majority vote of 42 to 7. This legislation, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Hufstetler, is designed to cap annual property tax increases at 3%, enhance valuation procedures, and offer much-needed relief to homeowners. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has been a vocal advocate for this tax reform, addressing long-standing issues related to local property taxes. If this bill receives approval from the House and gets signed into law by Gov. Kemp, it will necessitate a statewide vote. Despite the bill's progress, it faces opposition, notably from the Georgia School Boards Association, which has raised concerns about how the tax cap could limit the financial flexibility of school boards. If the bill navigates these remaining obstacles successfully, it is expected to feature on the ballot this coming November. These students were recognized for scoring in the top 10% nationwide on the PSAT. Each scholar received an embroidered “Key Scholar” letter-jacket patch, pen, and keychain. STORY 2: GEORGIA SENATORS DEBATE STATE PULLOUT FROM ACCREDITING AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Conservative state senators in Georgia are advocating for the state's withdrawal from the American Library Association (ALA), a nonprofit organization. The debate arises from disagreements over the ALA's position on diversity in library materials. This matter was discussed in the Senate Government Oversight Committee, with some senators expressing concerns about the ALA's stances. Interestingly, State Librarian Julie Walker pointed out that Georgia's Public Library Service is not currently affiliated with the ALA, suggesting that disconnection might be feasible. However, the proposed bill, referred to as Senate Bill 390, aims to prevent state and local entities from spending funds on the ALA. The bill also proposes to relax requirements for public library directors. Critics of the bill, including the dean of Valdosta State University's library studies program, warn that this could lead to accreditation issues and financial repercussions. In addition to SB 390, another bill known as SB 394 is under consideration. This bill seeks to regulate the materials available in school libraries, sparking debates over potential censorship and the role of educators. STORY 3: NEW GEORGIA SENATE COMMITTEE INVESTIGATING FANI WILLIS VOWS NONPARTISAN APPROACH The Special Committee on Investigations in the Georgia Senate, under the leadership of Sen. Bill Cowsert, has assembled to scrutinize allegations surrounding Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her management of a case involving former President Donald Trump. Cowsert stressed the committee's dedication to unbiased and comprehensive examination of the allegations, which include claims of inappropriate relationships influencing the case. Willis, however, has firmly denied any misconduct. The procedural rules of the committee ensure bipartisan representation, providing Democrats with the opportunity to partake in depositions and questioning. Cowsert underscored the gravity of the investigation, aiming to circumvent political bias and media exaggeration. To facilitate this, the committee intends to promptly employ staff and initiate its work, prioritizing fact-finding, and transparency. Applications will be evaluated in March not based on order of submission, but on the quality of the goods and their fit for the market. The goal of the market is to support local growers, emphasize the significance of locally sourced products, and create opportunities for education about agriculture and food preparation. Potential vendors can submit their applications either online or in person. Over 50 applicants are anticipated to be approved for participation in this year's market. DATA FROM THE BUREAU OF TRANSPORTATION STATISTICS REVEALS THAT THE SHARE OF ROADS IN "ACCEPTABLE CONDITION" IN GEORGIA HAS DROPPED FROM 99.86% IN 2000 TO JUST UNDER 93% IN 2020. THIS DECREASE HAS FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS FOR GEORGIA MOTORISTS, WHO SPEND AN AVERAGE OF $410 PER YEAR ON VEHICLE MAINTENANCE COSTS AND INCREASED FUEL CONSUMPTION DUE TO POORLY MAINTAINED ROADS. THE CONDITION OF ROADS IS MEASURED BY THE INTERNATIONAL ROUGHNESS INDEX (IRI), WITH ROADS HAVING IRI VALUES BELOW 170 CONSIDERED IN ACCEPTABLE CONDITION AND THOSE ABOVE 170 CLASSIFIED AS POOR. THESE FIGURES ARE PART OF A LARGER TREND ACROSS THE U.S, WHERE THE STATE OF ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE HAS DETERIORATED, LEADING TO AN ESTIMATED $130 BILLION IN EXTRA VEHICLE REPAIRS AND FUEL COSTS ANNUALLY. Additionally, House Bill 1021 aims to increase Georgia's child-tax deduction from $3,000 to $4,000. These bills now move to the state Senate for consideration. We’ll have closing comments after this. Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: CHEROKEE COUNTY MAN CONVICTED OF WIFE'S MURDER SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON Charles Terry Collins, 71, has been sentenced to life in prison plus an additional five years for the murder of his wife, Deborah Sherry Collins, 63. Collins was convicted of felony murder, family violence aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony. The incident occurred in July at their home near Canton, with Collins claiming self-defense. However, investigators found inconsistencies, including the absence of blood on a knife near the victim and no fingerprints on it. Collins did not call 911 after the shooting but informed his son. The jury, after a six-day trial, found Collins guilty on all charges. Prosecutors hope the sentence brings healing and closure to the torn family. STORY 2: WOODSTOCK VOTERS COULD DECIDE ON RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT FOR SENIOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION Woodstock City Council is considering amending the senior homestead property tax exemption, introducing a bill that proposes a five-year residency requirement for future beneficiaries. The bill, HB 1013, sponsored by Rep. Brad Thomas, is set for a voter referendum on the May primary ballot. Current recipients of the exemption would be grandfathered in. Mayor Michael Caldwell believes the amendment ensures individuals contribute their fair share in property taxes. Woodstock seniors aged 62 and above can qualify for the exemption without income or home value limits. Additionally, other bills, SB 388 and HB 1025, aim to eliminate the cap on Cherokee County seniors' school property tax exemptions, with a local referendum election scheduled for May. STORY 3: SEQUOYAH BAND DIRECTOR NAMED REGIONAL MUSIC TEACHER OF THE YEAR Casey Eubanks, the Director of Bands at Sequoyah High School, has been honored as the Georgia Music Educators Association’s District 9 Music Educator of the Year. Eubanks, who announced his retirement, received the award at the association's annual conference in Athens. During his tenure, Eubanks led the marching band to numerous accolades, including All Superior ratings and 14 grand championships. He also earned invitations for the concert band, making Sequoyah the first CCSD band program to perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association’s conference. Superintendent Brian Hightower praised Eubanks for his continuous excellence in representing Sequoyah and CCSD. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The project, which began in January 2023, faced delays due to weather concerns and steel material delays impacting the metal roof installation. The library's executive director, Angela Cortellino, acknowledged the delays but expressed excitement about the facility's eventual opening. The renovated library, designed by CAS Architecture and constructed by Hollandsworth Construction, will add 7,800 square feet, providing more space for books, technology, programs, meetings, collaboration, and seating. During construction, community members can access services at nearby libraries in Cherokee, Pickens, and Gilmer counties. For updates, visit sequoyahregionallibrary.org/hflproject. STORY 5: FANI WILLIS DISCLOSES 'PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP' WITH SPECIAL PROSECUTOR IN TRUMP CASE Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis revealed her "personal relationship" with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she hired in the election interference case against Donald Trump. However, Willis argued that this relationship does not warrant dismissing the racketeering indictment against Trump and 18 co-defendants. A motion by one defendant, Michael Roman, alleged an improper relationship and questioned Wade's qualifications. Willis stated there are no legal grounds for disqualification, emphasizing her lack of financial or personal conflicts. Republicans argue the case is politically motivated, prompting a Georgia Senate committee investigation. State Rep. Charlice Byrd introduced a resolution for the Georgia House to consider impeachment proceedings against Willis. A hearing on Roman's motion is scheduled for Feb 15. ***GCPS READ*** Hey, Cherokee County! Don't forget to mark your calendar for the GCPS Teacher Job Fair in just 4 days! Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: GEORGIA SENATE PASSES SPORTS BETTING BILL The Georgia Senate has passed legislation (Senate Bill 386) to legalize sports betting in the state, but only after approving a significant change requiring a statewide referendum on the measure. The bill, passed by a vote of 35-15, would have the Georgia Lottery Corp. oversee sports betting, issuing licenses to 16 online sports betting providers. Notably, the bill calls for a statewide referendum, making the measure contingent on a constitutional amendment, similar to the process used for the Georgia Lottery. The referendum would be part of the May 21 general election primary ballot if the House approves the bill. STORY 2: NEW DRIVING TOUR EXPLORES CHEROKEE COUNTY’S BLACK HISTORY History Cherokee has introduced a new Black History Driving Tour featuring 19 sites in Canton and Woodstock, aiming to raise awareness about the significance of preserving and celebrating Black history in Cherokee County, Georgia. STORY 3: CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD NAMES FINALIST FOR SUPERINTENDENT The Cherokee County school board voted 4-3 to name Mary Elizabeth Davis as the sole finalist for the superintendent position. The board will vote on confirming her appointment on February 15. Davis is currently the superintendent for Henry County Schools and has served in various leadership roles in education, including chief academic officer in Cobb County School District and assistant superintendent of teaching and learning in Gwinnett County Public Schools. The decision faced opposition from some board members who believe the next superintendent should have firsthand knowledge of the unique district and community. The current superintendent, Brian Hightower, is retiring at the end of the school year. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. The settlement came after Joycelyn Wade's attorneys sought to depose Willis in the divorce proceeding. The temporary agreement, dealing with issues like fee payments and use of assets, will not affect future hearings on Wade and Willis’ relationship. Both are now targets of subpoenas by an attorney representing one of the defendants in the criminal racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and his allies. STORY 5: CCSD STUDENTS ADVANCE TO STATE TECH FAIR Cherokee County School District (CCSD) students excelled at the Student Technology Competition, with 39 students securing first place at the regional level and advancing to the state contest in Georgia. Walmart has come close to matching this advantage. Other players like Shopify have struggled to compete due to the immense costs involved in building a comparable infrastructure. FedEx, having decided to stop doing business with Amazon in 2019, has built a substantial delivery network nationally. Now, FedEx plans to offer its retailer customers access to an e-commerce platform named "fdx," leveraging its delivery capabilities and technology from the acquisition of ShopRunner in 2020. This move aims to revolutionize supply chain management and enhance FedEx's relationships with merchants. STORY 2: CCSD STUDENTS SELECTED FOR REGIONAL HONOR BAND Sixty-five middle school band members from the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) have been selected for the Georgia Music Educators Association District 9 Honor Band. Three men carjacked a 2023 Cadillac CT4, fleeing toward the KSU campus. The carjacked vehicle was located by the Cobb Police's Real Time Crime Center, leading KSU Police to issue a secure-in-place alert due to reports of an armed intruder on campus. Marquise Adams, 17, was apprehended with the stolen vehicle's keys after a foot chase, but two suspects remained at large. No shots were fired on campus, and there were no reported injuries. The secure-in-place alert was lifted at 8:18 p.m. as police continue to investigate. Contact the Cobb County Police Department with information at 770-499-4111. Kate will be honored at the school board meeting on February 15. He expressed the goal of maintaining expense growth below population growth and inflation. Johnston acknowledged the rising costs of public safety and the need for more funding for alternatives to incarceration. Slowing population growth to around 0.75% over 30 years and increasing road funding were highlighted as challenges and goals. STORY 7: CHEROKEE COUNTY STUDENT NAMED CANDIDATE FOR U.S. PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM Creekview High School senior Kinley Sikes has been selected as a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, an elite national honor. FROM THE INGLES STUDIO THIS IS YOUR NEWS MINUTE ON THE CHEROKEE TRIBUNE LEDGER PODCAST PRESENTED BY DRAKE REALTY. TODAY IS FRIDAY, JANUARY 26TH, AND I'M KEITH IPPOLITO https://twitter.com/KeithIpp86. RIDLEY INTRODUCES BILL TO EXPAND CHEROKEE'S SENIOR SCHOOL TAX HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION https://www.tribuneledgernews.com/local_news/ridley-introduces-bill-to-expand-cherokees-senior-school-tax-homestead-exemption/article_2fa44f14-bbb3-11ee-9e1d-5f5473974cea.html IN A RECENT LEGISLATIVE MOVE, STATE REP. JORDAN RIDLEY, R-WOODSTOCK, INTRODUCED HOUSE BILL 1025, AIMED AT BROADENING THE SENIOR SCHOOL PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION IN CHEROKEE COUNTY. THE BILL STIPULATES THAT SENIORS AGED 62 AND ABOVE, WHO HAVE RESIDED IN THE COUNTY FOR A MINIMUM OF FIVE YEARS AND EARN AN ANNUAL INCOME NOT EXCEEDING $16,000, WOULD BE EXEMPT FROM ALL CHEROKEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT AD VALOREM TAXES FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. THIS EXEMPTION APPLIES TO THE FULL VALUE OF THEIR HOMESTEAD. IF THE BILL RECEIVES APPROVAL AND IS SIGNED INTO LAW, IT WOULD GENERATE A LOCAL BALLOT REFERENDUM. CHEROKEE COUNTY VOTERS WOULD THEN DECIDE ON THE PROPOSED EXPANSION OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL TAX BREAK. STATE REP. RIDLEY EXPRESSED HIS SUPPORT FOR THE BILL, STATING, "OUR SENIOR CITIZENS DESERVE A BREAK FROM AD VALOREM TAXES. WITH RECORD-HIGH INFLATION INCREASING THE FINANCIAL BURDEN ON RESIDENTS ACROSS THE STATE, IT'S MY HOPE THAT THIS LEGISLATION WILL BRING VITAL RELIEF TO OUR TAXPAYERS." CURRENTLY, SENIORS AGED 62 AND ABOVE IN CHEROKEE COUNTY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR A SCHOOL PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION, BUT THIS IS CAPPED AT A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF THEIR HOMESTEAD'S VALUE. THIS CAP IS ADJUSTED ANNUALLY BASED ON THE SOCIAL SECURITY INDEX. IN 2023, PROPERTIES IN CHEROKEE COUNTY WITNESSED AN AVERAGE INCREASE OF 15.01% IN THEIR ASSESSMENTS COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR. RIDLEY'S BILL AIMS TO ALLEVIATE SOME OF THE FINANCIAL PRESSURE CAUSED BY THESE INCREASES. FOR MORE NEWS ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY, VISIT TRIBUNELEDGERNEWS.COM https://www.tribuneledgernews.com/.
