Spotlight on Stony Plain

Stony Plain is based in Edmonton, Alberta. The label specializes in what its founder Holger Petersen calls roots music: Contemporary music with roots in the past that stands on its own, but which influences almost all other music forms. Established in 1976, the label has released over 400 albums of blues and roots music that is impossible to put into neat pigeonholes. The common element in all of these forms of music is that the musicians, regardless of current fad or fashion, put their hearts and souls into the music they make. Stony Plain released the results – and almost invariably found that people responded.

Today, Alligator boasts a catalog of over 350 titles, many of which are renowned, award-winning, time-tested classics of the genre. Alligator Records’ artists and recordings have received 48 Grammy Award nominations and three Grammy Awards, over 150 Blues Music Awards and over 70 Living Blues Awards.

Twofer Time

The concept here is to play an entire show of sets of two tunes by an artist from the same recording. With a couple of exceptions, we succeeded in what we set out to do. There's an emphasis on new releases, and lots of Canuckians to be heard for your listening and dancing pleasure. We take a deep dive into the recent work Quebec-based artist Mike Goudreau, and we wind up the show with ace harmonica player Paul Oscher, who passed away recently.

The United Records Story

Our first-Saturday-of-the-month retrospective series continues with a deep dive into the catalogue of a record company founded in Chicago in 1951. United Records issued discs by blues artists such as Junior Wells, Memphis Slim, Roosevelt Sykes and Robert Nighthawk. It was also noteable for the great of amount of music it released performed in the doowop style. Most of United's output was eventually acquired by Bob Koester of Delmark Records, who made most of it available through comprehensive reissues. As well, we will take a look at the artistry of the recently departed Canadian guitarist Ellen McIlwaine.

We'll hear from Juno winner Crystal Shawanda, who picked up the trophy for Blues Album of the Year. We've got new releases from Steve Marriner, Rob Lutes and Curtis Salgado. And last but not least, we will preview some actual upcoming live shows, with live audiences!

A Delmark Records Tribute

Our retrospective series rides again! Delmark Records was started by Bob Koester in 1953 while he was still a university student in 1953. He sold the label in 2018, and it is still putting out jazz and blues releases. It is the longest running independent record label in the USA. Delmark brought us great artists like Magic Sam, Otis Rush, J.B. Hutto and Junior Wells. Bab passed away on May 12th, 2021 at the age of 88. On July 3rd, we will devote an entire show to the interesting United Records, a Delmark aquisition.

Hosts Jim Burnett and Paul Norton battle it out to impress each other (and you, dear listener) with their favourite classic Mardi Gras / New Orleans numbers. Since you can't head down to the Big Easy to experience the real deal this year, this is your next best bet. The whole idea is to entice you to make a donation to CiTR during the 2021 FunDrive! If you are suitably impressed, head on over to www.citr.ca/donate http://www.citr.ca/donate and plunk down a bit of your Revenue Canada subsidy funds to help the station keep on keepin' on. And don't forget to pick Code Blue as your "donation inspiration"!
