The Hallowe'en Show

This week's extended edition of Folk Oasis is eclectic indeed and even goes off-genre at times. I hope you'll agree that the tunes and comedy bits I've gathered make a good pairing to those bags of candy you're supposed to save until Saturday. :-D Think of the children!! Play safe and have fun this weekend.. As always, thanks for listening. Please keep in touch! Val folkoasis@gmail.com

Texas, y'all!

Welcome to a special all-Texas edition of Folk Oasis. I just returned from a week in Austin and brought back some tunes and tales from the Lone Star State. A musical travelogue which I hope might inspire some of y'all to visit that fine city. This show dedicated to Matt Morgan of New Braunfels, TX who celebrated a birthday today! Vaya con dios, mi amigo. Thanks for listening, and please feel free to get in touch! folkoasis@gmail.com

Mississippi Live & The Dirty Dirty live in studio

Tonight I had the good fortune of welcoming East Vancouver's Connely Farr & Jay Johnson (Mississippie Live & The Dirty Dirty) to the show for a live session. Since Connely is an articling architect, we got some feedback on the new AMS Nest as well as the new proposal for the Vancouver Art Gallery. I also featured several new albums tonight: I'm particularly excited about new releases from Linda McRae and Francesca Blanchard. Sorry I forgot to give away Del Barber/Fortunate Ones tickets as I'd promised! Stay tuned to Oct. 7 show with fill-in Matt Granlund and he'll take care of that. Thanks for listening, and please keep in touch! -Val folkoasis@gmail.com

Welcome to the first official day of autumn 2015! Tonight I was pleased to welcome "hapa" artist Buckman Coe, whose CD release will be October 10 at the Imperial. It's also Yom Kippur, so I finished with a new Geoff Berner tune; sorry it was cut off so suddenly! (technical glitch) May I atone? Take care, all, and please get in touch to say hi! cheers, val folkoasis@gmail.com

I was pleased to welcome Andy Gordon, who hails from Kangaroo Bay, NSW, Australia. We had a great chat and heard some tunes from his latest album "New Albion". Prepared to be schooled on colonial Australian history! Hope you enjoyed tonight's show, and feel free to get in touch. I'd love to hear from you! cheers, val folkoasis@gmail.com

Welcome to my festival-addled voice on this week's Folk Oasis. It sounds worse than it feels, and should be okay soon. It was all self-inflicted, in any case. :) While memories are still fresh, I shared musical and personal experiences from my recent visit to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and the VIA Rail trip home to Vancouver from Edmonton. Both good times and I encourage you all to try both experiences. Thanks so much for listening, and hope you'll join me again next week. Keep spreading the good word! Love, Val folkoasis@gmail.com

My apologies for technical glitches and strange noises which occurred during tonight's broadcast. Ghosts in the machines, I'm convinced! In any case, I hope you enjoy an eclectic music mix which includes a Newfoundlander on accordion, a Malian on guitar, and an Acadian on vocals. Joining me live in the studio tonight were local troubador Rodney Decroo, accompanied by upright bass player Mark Haney. We heard some exquisite tunes from Rodney's latest album. To those who celebrate/partake, a happy 4-20! Spark 'em if you got 'em. ;-) hugs, val folkoasis@gmail.com

Another lovely spring evening on the West Coast: hope this finds you dear listeners all well and in fine fettle. Tonight's Vinyl Vault was dedicated to Joni Mitchell, still in hospital at the time of this writing, and was side 2 of her debut LP. I also had a chance to chat with Oliver Swain, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire from Vancouver Island, about his project "Tower of Song", a tribute to Leonard Cohen. He's taking it on tour this spring, starting with a Centennial Theatre (North Van) show April 10. Have a lovely Easter weekend, all, and I'll be back next week with 2 more kumbaya-free hours! cheers, and thanks for listening. Val folkoasis@gmail.com
