In this part of the conversation, we talk about our recent experience playing the board game Small World for my birthday. It was a fun time for me and my kids, and even sparked some nostalgia for my daughter Ally, who used to play it with her dad. We discuss the different characters we enjoy playing in role-playing games, like warriors, thieves, sneaky rogues, and powerful mages. Shannon adds that she tends to be a leader and approaches games analytically. We have a great discussion exploring the various character options and traits. Moving on, we delve into the fascinating world of idioms and phrases. We explore their meanings and the cultural and historical context behind them. Idioms like "cherry on top" and "caught between a rock and a hard place" are touched upon, underscoring the importance of cultural knowledge in understanding them fully. We ponder the origins and common usage of idioms such as "beef up" and "bigger fish to fry," reflecting on their literal meanings. Additionally, we dive into idioms like "cool as a cucumber" and "costs an arm and a leg," marveling at their alliteration and metaphorical associations. Through this exploration, we gain a deeper appreciation for the linguistic and cultural significance of idioms. As we near the end of the show, we discuss idioms that seem nonsensical at first glance. Phrases like "dress to the nines" and "beating a dead horse" are mentioned, acknowledging that while their origins may be unclear, they have become ingrained in our everyday language. We laugh and joke about idioms like "bringing home the bacon" and "beating around the bush," recognizing the absurdity and charm they bring to our conversations. Before bidding farewell, we sprinkle in a few more idioms like "running like the wind" and "the straw that broke the camel's back." In this episode of the podcast, we delve into a variety of intriguing topics. Firstly, we explore the science behind tides and the role the moon plays in their creation. We discuss how the gravitational influence of the moon squeezes the ocean, causing bulges and pumping action. We also touch upon the varying levels of tides in different locations and how the geometry of a place can affect this phenomenon. Our conversation then takes an interesting turn as we delve into the concept of 0.999999 repeating being equal to 1. We explain that, mathematically, the two numbers are indeed the same, but acknowledge the challenges in grasping this concept due to the complexities surrounding infinity. The topic of discussion then shifts towards intriguing research and peculiar awards. We explore the Ig Nobel Awards, which highlight thought-provoking yet amusing studies. We mention examples such as the research on licking rocks to enhance visibility and a study on jamais vu, the opposite of déjà vu. We acknowledge our limited understanding of these psychological phenomena and refrain from speculating without further research. We further delve into the realm of memory and false memories. We discuss how external factors can influence our perception of reality and how misfirings in the brain can create the sensation of déjà vu. We share personal experiences and debate the nature of reality and memory, engaging in a lighthearted discussion on the topic. Other topics we touch upon include reanimating dead spiders for use as gripping tools, counting nose hairs, backward speech, and the Stanford Toilet project, which analyzes human waste. The implosion design was more complex and required extensive testing to ensure its effectiveness. Greg then discusses the ethical implications of nuclear weapons and the devastating consequences of their use. In this episode, we delve into the fascinating world of atoms and their constituent particles. We start by discussing the basic concepts of protons, neutrons, and electrons, emphasizing the critical role electrons play in chemistry. Moving forward, we explore how the stability of elements is influenced by the number of protons and neutrons they contain. We also touch upon the intriguing phenomenon of heavy elements decaying and share some exciting scientific discoveries related to neutrinos and the gravitational wave background. Shifting gears, we transition into the realm of image processing and the application of large language models and transformers in this field. We delve into the process of training the models to denoise and restore images, starting from incorporating noise and gradually enhancing the model's denoising capabilities. Additionally, we discuss the utilization of random noise as a foundation for image generation, enabling the model to produce unique visuals based on specific prompts. While we acknowledge the model's ability to recognize general object features, we mention that it lacks a complete understanding of particular concepts. For instance, it struggles to differentiate between cats and dogs. Intriguingly, we reveal our plan to leverage this technology in creating a captivating image for our podcast, "Failed Threesome." We elaborate on the need to find a suitable platform for collaborating on image creation and our aspiration to generate a court sketch incorporating a beer element, given our podcast's theme. As we brainstorm ideas, we express the challenges we face in finding the perfect image to represent our podcast. We consider enlisting the help of an anthropomorphic oyster as our on-air persona, and we share different image ideas that range from a vintage photograph with a 90s aesthetic of a New York City street to an atmosphere reminiscent of the Matrix. Despite attempting to generate a coloring book sheet featuring a fire dragon spinning flames, our expectations were not fully met. On a positive note, we stumbled upon some excellent figures reminiscent of Dali's style, having a delightful Disney-like quality and superior artwork. Unfortunately, when it comes to image quality, Bing falls short, and chat GPT suggestions didn't meet our expectations either. Realizing that discussing images in a podcast may seem futile since our audience cannot see them, we acknowledge our limited listener base and ponder whether anyone is still tuned in. In a heartfelt plea, we ask any listeners who may be present to connect with us on Discord, emphasizing how their support means the world to us. Wrapping up this episode, we recognize that it may be time to move on from the image discussion for now. After all, dwelling on this topic further serves little purpose. However, for those few dedicated listeners out there, we express our gratitude and encourage them to engage with us on Discord. 00:00:00 Planning for a future episode and scheduling logistics 00:03:44 Considering the option of adding lime to improve the taste 00:04:42 Lime in the Beer: The Essence of Corona 00:12:28 The Future of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 00:16:20 A passionate rant about the last season of Picard 00:20:02 Criticizing poorly thought out liberal communications companies. 00:23:37 Exploring the realistic space combat simulation game "Children of a Dead Earth." 00:27:04 Reflecting on the two-dimensional nature of battles in Star Trek and Star Wars. 00:30:17 Experience and Managing People 00:31:33 Situational Leadership II: A Training Recommendation 00:37:28 The Coaching Habit: Becoming a Coach Instead of a Director 00:43:06 The Benefits of Unlimited Vacation Time 00:50:14 Disappointment with "Force Awakens" and Lack of Plan 00:54:15 Possibilities for Expanding the Star Trek Universe 01:00:08 The Lost Art of Teaching Practical Skills to Kids 01:01:38 Observations at the Seder 01:10:54 The Debate on Using Reusable Grocery Bags 01:17:42 Dishwasher Hacks and Improving Efficiency 01:19:10 Introduction to Super Heavy Elements and Chemistry Basics 01:31:05 Waves and Frequency: Zooming In vs. Zooming Out 01:34:53 Gravity and Quantum Mechanics: The Mysterious Link 01:38:02 Discussion about Milk Preferences 01:46:28 Frosted Miniweeds and the Versatility of Cereal 01:56:35 Experimenting with Celery Seed and Flavor Enhancements 02:00:23 The Overwhelming Evidence for Artisanal Ketchup 02:05:41 Utilizing a food processor for efficient meal preparation 02:16:34 GPT-3's limitations in accessing certain types of information 02:26:05 The fascinating process of image generation through iterations 02:28:51 The Difference between Chat GPT and Stand-up Performance 02:29:45 Failed attempts and frustrations with generating images 02:33:15 Reflecting on the pointlessness of image generation on a podcast
