On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙- in this week in Vikings land the news has started to flow like the blood at the red wedding. First off, we need to acknowledge the passing of Bud Grant. That has our hearts heavy going into today’s show. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has been making moves this week, the first one being releasing linebacker Eric Kendricks. Then more releases came about along with some salary cuts. A possible one resides in the group we will focus on today, the safeties. Eric Kendricks had a long-storied career with the Minnesota Vikings it is debatable where he falls in the hierarchy of some of the best linebackers this team has ever seen. Would you put him on that Mount Rushmore of linebackers? There are some excellent ones, and he was one. The Vikings started over the cap and we knew they had to make roster moves just to get under it. That process is still underway, however after Kendricks came the release of Adam Thielen and the waving of Cameron Dantzler. There are more moves to come. Where will they go next to get the necessary cap space to achieve their 2023 objectives? In our state of the Vikings series, we are looking at the safeties group. The group is obviously headlined by Harrison ”Hitman” Smith, but will he remain on the squad with a very large salary? Will he take a pay cut? What about the younger players in the group? Finally, we will wrap up the show with a tribute to Bud Grant. He has the Hall of Fame coach that kept an office in the building from when he retired after the 1985 season. He has a fixture in Minnesota lore. He will be sorely missed. All these questions and more as Darren and Dave will get into these themes on today’s 2OB. On this🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings are currently working on getting under the salary cap with about $15 million more to go. One of the players that has been discussed as a cut is edge rusher Za'Darius Smith. In what looks to be a sign that he is likely to be released, Smith tweeted out a thank you to Skol Nation and the entire Minnesota Vikings organization at 3:37 central time on Thursday afternoon. This would come as no surprise, as Smith's effectiveness in the second half of the year was minimized significantly due to a knee injury. Moving on from Smith was always a distinct possibility due to the nature of his contract and the style of defense that Brian Flores is implementing. Moving on from Smith would save the Vikings $12,156,861 in cap space according to Over The Cap. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Smith has officially requested to be released, but the team has "no intention to do so." What does all this mean? Tyler and Dave break it all down live Fan with us!!! On this🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings are in another quarterback conundrum. Quarterback Kirk Cousins is entering the last year of his contract with a $36.25 million cap hit and the Vikings are in a position where they want more flexibility. On the other side, Cousins seems to want a long-term extension that will give him security. What complicates things is the quarterback events of the last 48 hours. -Derek Carr: 4/$150 -Geno Smith: 3/$105 -Lamar Jackson: Franchise Tag -Daniel Jones: 4/$160 with an extra $35 million in incentives With all of this new information, how will that impact the Vikings' negotiations with Cousins and the future of the franchise? On this🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings just left the NFL Scouting Combine where they saw some legendary performances. How do we quantify that? How should these performances be quantified when you have spent time watching the film? We will discuss that in-depth. Along with that, there were rumblings that the Vikings are a team to watch to take a quarterback. There were some excellent quarterback performances. How would they be able to accomplish that? The Vikings also moved on from star linebacker Eric Kendricks. The move saves $9.5 million in cap space but also creates a void at linebacker. This is the first of many moves. Who will be next? Lastly, we will finish the show with another mock draft, this being reflective of what happened at the scouting combine this past weekend. On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - this week in Vikings land with Darren and Dave will cover quarterbacks, the Wilfs, and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah at the Combine. Surely there isn’t anything controversial about that [sarcasm]. In our first theme, we’ll talk about how your Minnesota Vikings ranked #1 in the NFLPA’s first-ever report card covering how players rank the teams in various areas. Zygi and Mark Wilf can be proud of what they have built both from a structural and personnel standpoint. Will the Vikings stay at the top of this list? Will this start a spending spree by the very large egos of NFL owners? Continuing with the state of the Vikings series, Darren and Dave will be looking at the last group on the offensive side of the ball, the quarterbacks. As of right now the Vikings only have one quarterback under contract, and that is Kirk Cousins. Obviously, they will need at least two more to round out the roster for the 2023 season. How will they get those QBs? Since the NFL Scouting Combine is fully underway, we’ve had press conferences with the teams' general managers to include are very own Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Like typical GMs, he said a lot and said little to nothing. Darren is going to dive into what he said and what it meant.… Or at least his interpretation thereof. Will you agree? What is your interpretation? All these questions and more as Darren and Dave will get into these themes on today’s 2OB. Theme #1: We’re #1! Theme #2: State of the Vikings - Quarterbacks Theme #3: What Kwesi said, what Kwesi meant Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. On this 🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings are in a position where they need to add multiple cornerbacks this offseason. They only have Cameron Dantzler, Andrew Booth Jr. and Akayleb Evans on the roster currently and new defensive coordinator Brian Flores prioritizes talent at the cornerback position. On Friday afternoon, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Los Angeles Rams were having discussions to trade All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and league sources believed he would likely be traded. On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - It has been another interesting week for your Minnesota Vikings. We found out during the week that defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and the Vikings agreed to extend the date that his contract is to be voided to March 15, the start of the new league year. Why would they do that? Is it because there is a mutual interest to continue their relationship? Could it be a possible money-saving move? Is it worth it? This week, Dave and Darren will look at the state of the wide receivers’ room. Justin Jefferson is on the verge of getting the biggest wide receiver extension in NFL history, but does he have a WR2 opposite him? Adam Thielen has played that role, but he seems to be getting older and a lot more expensive. Will he be cut? Will they hope to keep him on a pay reduction? What about KJ Osborn stepping up into that role? Could it be a free agent or draft pick? The Vikings lost a one-time owner in Red McCombs this last week. No matter what you think of Red, we wish him to rest in peace. Also, the team is working to fill coaching vacancies opened by previous coaches getting promotions to other teams. What will be ahead of these guys? All these questions and more as Darren and Dave will get into these themes on today’s 2OB. Theme #1: Does Tomlinson stay or go? On this 🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - We are just over a month out from the Minnesota Vikings' 31-24 loss and the offseason is in full force. With the offseason comes uneducated narratives surrounding draft prospects. One of those is with Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson. He has all the talent in the world and Tyler wrote a piece about why the Vikings should make a trade-up and select the star quarterback. Also, we look at a deep dive that Tyler wrote in terms of what types of wide receivers the Sean McVay tree has prioritized over the course of the last nine seasons (since McVay became an offensive coordinator). What can we gather from this? We also have our first mock draft of the season! This time with the PFF simulator. On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - Can Brian Flores Fix The Vikings Defense? The Minnesota Vikings had their introductory press conference where Kevin O’Connell introduced his new defensive coordinator, Brian Flores. What were your first impressions coming from the press conference? Today we’re going to get into three themes as usual. One of those first impressions of Brian Flores. Did you like that he’s going to be “aggressive”, but “not reckless”? Did you see the chemistry between him and KOC? What sort of defense he’ll run? He did come out and say it depends on our opponent. Yes, he confirmed 3-4 is the base defense, but the answer shows he’ll adapt to what is best to get the job done, and for the Vikings to win. That has to be music to all of our ears. We’ll continue with our State of the Vikings series this week looking at the tight ends. The room is small and has only three under contract with TJ Hockenson leading the way. Who will be next? Will Hockenson get an extension? How does that all figure into the big picture? Cap space and planning for Justin Jefferson all play into figuring that out. And we are going to wrap up with some quick hitters. Za’Darius Smith, getting his house ready to put on the market? A couple of guys sign, Blake Brandel and Khyiris Tonga. Then look at what Sharrif Floyd is up to nowadays. Darren and Dave will get into these themes and more on today’s 2OB. On this 🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings have arguably had only one franchise quarterback in their history: Fran Tarkenton. Why have they struggled so much with the position? From Dennis Green trying to put someone in as the starter to not being able to find a starter for more than six years, it’s been an issue for 42+ years. In that time, the Vikings haven’t done nearly enough to fix the issue, but they are apparently average in trying to attempt it. What does all this mean? Total quarterbacks drafted. On this 🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The 2022 season is officially over and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 38-35 in one of the best on-field title games in NFL history. The game itself had a lot of storylines throughout and we will discuss them all, especially the fateful holding call at the end of the game. The game also relates to the Minnesota Vikings in many ways. The NFL is a copycat league and the Vikings can take numerous things from both teams to help them craft a championship blueprint. There are two pieces up on Vikings Wire right now breaking them down for both teams. We will also discuss the Vikings needing a cornerback and why they don't need to force one in the first round. * Super Bowl LVII thoughts * Officiating consistency * What can the Vikings learn from the Super Bowl? * The CB conundrum: An argument against cornerback with the first pick All of that and more on Monday night’s The Real Forno Show! On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - It took longer than expected, and fans feared the worst as defensive coordinators fell by the wayside, but in the long run, the Minnesota Vikings got their man. Brian Flores gave up waiting for a possible head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals and accepted the defensive coordinator position with your Minnesota Vikings. What will he need to turn the 31st-ranked defense around? We’ll talk about it. Continuing with our state of the Vikings series, we are looking at the offensive line in today's show. What players will be back and who are the free agents? Can Coach Chris Kuper make the squad better than it was last season? Will the Vikings target any linemen in free agency or the draft? Finally, on today's show, we’ll talk about the future of Adam Thielen. Will he be a Minnesota Viking for the rest of his life? Will he be cut to save cap space? Will he accept a renegotiated contract? All these are on the table and more with today's show. Darren and Dave will get into these themes and more on today’s 2OB. We’ll look at some of those players as well. First, we’re going to start by looking at the Vikings’ running back room. Dalvin Cook, will he or will he not be back for 2023? Yes, he is under contract, but releasing him could free up a significant amount of cap space. We have Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu backing him up, but will the Vikings need to look elsewhere either in free agency or the draft to fill out that room so they are ready for 2023? How will Kevin O’Connell use the running backs when he obviously favors the pass? We have a new candidate in the pool for the defensive coordinator and we lost another. Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero was released from his contract late this week since Sean Payton has taken over as the new Broncos head coach. He has instantly moved to the top of the Vikings’ list. He has worked with both Kevin O’Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah before and figures to be a great fit into the culture if he is hired, his background is quite impressive. Sean Desai has bowed out because of that interest in hiring Evero. We’re going to look at some of the young talents that played this week at the Senior Bowl and at the East-West Shrine Game to see if any of those players might make the Vikings’ squad. Would you be interested in some of them? We have a history of selecting players at one of the two games, and Darren will take his deep thoughts on the subject and share it with you. Darren and Dave will get into these themes and more on today’s 2OB. On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - The offensive player of the year is awarded to? We are compelled to ask the question as your Minnesota Vikings' very own Justin Jefferson not only has made the final selection for league MVP but also is one of three finalists for the offensive player of the year award. First, we will talk about how the defensive coordinator search has progressed so far. We’ve already lost the possibility of Ryan Nielsen serving as DC because he took that position with the Atlanta Falcons. Currently, the Vikings have interviewed Steelers defensive assistant Brian Flores, their in-house assistant head coach, Mike Pettine, and Seattle defensive assistant, Sean Desai. What is the word on these individuals and how does Darren feel about them? Then we’re excited to discuss the great season that Justin Jefferson had. There are two players in Vikings history that have won the award of offensive player of the year. The first was Fran Tarkenton, and the second was Adrian Peterson. Will Justin Jefferson be the third? In the final theme, we will be looking at the trade possibilities of current Vikings players. What could net the Vikings the biggest gain if they are willing to trade someone to improve the team? There are many possibilities, but few that would produce the quality or quantity of draft selections needed to stay competitive and try to repeat a 13-win season. Would you trade any of these players? You might consider Justin Jefferson, Christian Darrisaw, Brian O’Neill, and Kirk Cousins off-limits, but who else does that leave? How about Danielle Hunter? Darren and Dave will get into these themes and more on today’s 2OB. Theme #1: Who will be the Vikings defensive coordinator? Theme #2: Justin Jefferson – a season for the ages Theme #3: The Vikings top trading chip – Danielle Hunter Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. On this Vikings Happy Hour, we are excited to talk about the Minnesota Vikings' decision to move on from Ed Donatell. Will this result in the dawn of a more effective Vikings defense? Did they handle the communication of the decision well? Was he set up for failure from the get-go? Then we’ll dive into the different defensive coordinator candidates we’ve interviewed since. From the likes of Brian Flores, Sean Desai, and Ryan Nielsen... we’ll talk about who we like and why. We’ll also talk about what they bring and what personnel we’d need to be successful. Also, discuss any additional candidates we may like. Discussion topics the bartender has lined up for episode 081 are: Ed Donatell firing - how it was handled Different DC interviews and what we’d need to do to field a defense to fit their style Was Kevin O'Connell snubbed for coach of the year? On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - Was the 2022 Minnesota Vikings season a success? Was it a failure? How do you measure? That is a point-of-view question for most people. Sure, there are multiple ways to measure it from wins and loss, to stats of all types, boxscore and advanced, to win the Super Bowl or it’s a bust. How you feel about it comes down to your view. Ed Donatell was released this week after a season where the defense underperformed compared to expectations and the rest of the league. Was it justified? There are names popping up like former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, New Orleans Saints co-defensive coordinator Ryan Nielson, and Seattle Seahawks defensive assistant Sean Desai interview requests have been made. Will one of these 3 gentlemen replace Donatell, or someone else? How will the choice affect the Vikings’ free agency and draft strategy? Speaking of the 2023 NFL Draft hosted in Kansas City, can Kwesi get a better hit rate on players that can make a difference in their rookie year than he did in 2022? With much change ahead, especially on the defensive side of the ball, along with the need to get cap compliant, a good draft will be imperative if the Vikings hope to repeat as NFC North Division Champions. Darren and Dave will get into these themes and more on today’s 2OB. Theme #1: Was the first year under Kevin O’Connell and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah a success? Theme #2: Donatell done as DC Theme #3: Better drafting is needed to improve the defense Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. On the Final Score today… It is Wild Card weekend and your Minnesota Vikings are taking on the New York Giants at US Bank Stadium. After a week of disrespect by the national media and especially the New Media being called things like frauds, illegitimate, more money going on the Giants, and even the crowd being called out for being too nice and not loud, the Vikings have the opportunity to use it as fuel and prove the haters wrong, once again. So far in the game, the Vikings started hot with an opening drive and then went silent until near half. Ed Donatell’s defense looks like the same ol’-same ol’ and the Giants have been scoring almost at will. Can the Vikings pull out another come-from-behind win again? Vikings are driving though. It ended up not being enough as the Vikings season ended with 31-24 loss to NYG. On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - We are now into the postseason. Your Minnesota Vikings have the #2 seed in the NFC and are matching up against the #6 seed New York Giants. The teams have played each other three times in the playoffs with the Giants, holding a 2-to-1 edge. The last time the Vikings won was in 1997 led by Randall Cunningham. Can Kirk Cousins accomplish what Randall Cunningham did? First, we will take a look at what the Vikings learned from their contests against the Chicago Bears last week. Where are their goals met? Many players got to play after the starters were pulled in the second half. That extra game time for the backups has to help, doesn’t it? We’re going to do a round of quick hitters. That means going over who will start at right tackle. How stealing a player from the Bears has worked out great for the Vikings. And, looking at Darren‘s favorite player, Irv Smith Jr, and how he may be a key element in this Vikings playoff run. Finally, we’ll break down the Giants at the Vikings. What is it gonna take to win a second game in a row in the same season? That is generally a tough ask. Just ask your division opponents. Can the Minnesota Vikings win and split the playoff series with the Giants? All these questions, and more on today’s 2OB. Theme #1: What did the Vikings accomplish against the Bears? On this 🎙The Real Forno Show 🏈 - The Minnesota Vikings regular season is over and they won 13 games for just the third time in franchise history. The previous two times were in 1998 and 2017 with both teams making the NFC Championship Game. On the Final Score today… It is the final game of the regular season and your Minnesota Vikings are looking for their 13th win. Will they get it? Absolutely! They started out with a 16-6 lead at the half which could’ve been a lot more if it weren’t for a couple of key mistakes. Justin Jefferson went over 1,800 yards for the season. In the second half, starting players have been pulled and backups are getting some playing time. We are seeing the likes of Venderian Lowe and Kyle Hinton in for Christian Darrisaw and Ezra Cleveland. Keen Nwangwu gets some RB snaps and even Jalen Reagor caught a pass so far and 2 total. At the end of 3 quarters, the Vikings lead still by 10 points, 23-13. Will they keep pressing to get the W? They did with the backups even. Joseph then hits a 53-yarder to make it 26-13. What are your thoughts on the game so far? They won! Do you like that the Purple by defeating the Chicago Bears, is keeping the heat on the 49ers? Yes. The #3 seed in the NFC playoffs is a lock, but the #2? Maybe? We will see. On today’s episode of Two Old Bloggers🎙 - We’re coming into week 18 and your Minnesota Vikings have a firm grasp on the #3 seed in the NFC playoffs, with a possibility if angels sing and unicorns sprinkle magic dust that they can accent to the #2 seed by the end of the day. Now what kind of miracle needs to take place? First, the Vikings need to defeat the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on that horrible turf. Second, the San Francisco 49ers must lose to the Arizona Cardinals to give it up. The Cards however are in pursuit of their own lousy record in hopes of a very high draft choice. Will that happen? Logically, doubtful, but anything can happen on any given Sunday in the NFL. Darren and Dave will be looking at three themes starting out with the offensive line worries. Due to some unforeseen and almost tragic injuries, both backup center Austin Schlottmann, and right tackle Brian O’Neill are out for the rest of the season. If Garrett Bradbury can come back to start at center, that would be great! However, like many of you when asked to help a friend move, his back is still bothering him. That means third-string center, Chris Reed, and third-string tackle, Oli Udoh, will get starts on Sunday. The offensive line will need this time to play so that they can gel going into the wild card weekend of the playoffs. Since this game should not be that competitive because the Chicago Bears are trying to lose and their hopes of gaining the #1 draft choice in the 2023 NFL draft, the question comes about, “Should the Vikes play the starters?” Head coach Kevin O’Connell is indicating that yes they will play. It could be because of those sensational hopes for the #2 seed, or it could be because they want to get a bad taste out of their mouth after being destroyed by the Green Bay Packers last week. Either way, it looks like we will see the starters, and it will be yet to be determined if that is a smart move or not. Then it’s onto those Windy City Bears who with a loss and a Houston Texans win, will get that #1 pick in the NFL draft. What does that mean for them? Well, they don’t really need a quarterback, if they believe in Justin Fields, who will not be playing on Sunday, so it could mean a massive haul in draft picks for some other needy team wanting to move up and grab a quarterback. That is what’s at stake on Sunday. So come join 20B in the analysis of what will happen in the near future. Theme #1: Offensive line worries Theme #2: Start ‘em or sit ‘em? Theme #3: Vikings at Bears Preview Darren Campbell and David Stefano are the Two Old Bloggers. Both started public commentary on the Vikings two decades ago on various blogs.
