March 19, 2023, Fourth Sunday of Lent, Holy Rosary (Glorious Mysteries)

Friends of the Rosary: This Fourth Sunday of Lent is known as LAETARE SUNDAY, for the word rejoice in Latin. It’s a foretaste of Easter joy. Today, when we are in the middle of Lent, a meaningful joy born of our fruitful life in Christ should come among the faithful. The Gospel’s reading (narrates the healing of the ‘man born blind’. It is the passage from the darkness of sin and error to the Light of God, who is the Risen Christ. The Solemnity of St. Joseph is usually celebrated on March 19 but has been transferred to March 20 since the liturgy of the Lenten Sundays takes precedence. Ave Maria! March 18, 2023, Holy Rosary (Joyful Mysteries)

Friends of the Rosary: We pray today's Joyful Mysteries from St. Michael the Archangel Parish, in Greenwich, Connecticut. Fr. Richard Murphy leads the Holy Rosary. In the reading today (Lk 18:9-14), Lord Jesus says: “EVERYONE WHO EXALTS HIMSELF WILL BE HUMBLED, AND THE ONE WHO HUMBLES HIMSELF WILL BE EXALTED.” The Son of God addressed the parable of two people who went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee prided himself on being the perfect religious practitioner. The tax collector was ashamed of his sins and asked mercy from the Lord. The Divinity loves people humble in spirit and who ask for mercy. The arrogant are far from the Kingdom. Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary: We honor today St. Patrick, the fifth-century bishop and saint who brought Christianity to Ireland, converting the whole country from their pagan gods to the one true faith. And Ireland, despite being a small country, has played a large role in spreading Christianity throughout the world. In his attributed autobiography, called and written in all humility, St. Patrick said: Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary: In the Gospel today (Lk 11:14-23), Christ Jesus says: The Son of God is crystal clear. Whoever does not help Him in His mission to gather citizens into His kingdom is guilty of scattering them. That means that the Pharisees, in their conspiracy to destroy Jesus, have put themselves against the Holy Spirit and the kingdom of God. With Satan, they stand against the work of God. Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary: Only the living water of the Holy Spirit — that graciously descends upon the faithful, as we learn in the third Glorious Mystery today— can quench man’s thirst for the infinite, as Benedict XVI once said. Man is able to give affection and care to his fellow humans but never endless joy and peace since these fruits belong to the Divine. Friends of the Rosary: A self-centered mentality distances us from God, and this separation causes dissatisfaction. To receive God’s gifts of joy, peace, and love, we must approach Him with humility and give ourselves to Him. Our secular society encourages us to focus on connecting and reconnecting with ourselves — and we see that in practices like yoga and mindfulness. Results fall short. Happiness can only be given by the One who possesses it, and man does not possess it. Mankind can try as many ideas and theories as he wishes. But Jesus Christ alone is the fount of life and happiness. Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary: We are given the gift and the grace of the Christian faith to persevere in spite of adversity. Christ is the living water; the only one who removes our thirst. Everything else is secondary. Looking elsewhere for solutions is a mistake. The life of the Samaritan woman (at the well changed completely when she discovered Jesus Christ. The woman had “five husbands” and she lived with another man. She represented the existential dissatisfaction of one who does not find what he seeks. Anyone without Lord Jesus is inevitably destined to dissatisfaction. Ave Maria! March 12, 2023, Third Sunday of Lent, Holy Rosary (Glorious Mysteries)

Friends of the Rosary: Today, the faithful marvel at the dialogue between Jesus Christ and the Samaritan woman (John 4:5-15, 19-26, 39-42). We see the humanity and divinity of Jesus, full man and full God, in full display. Jesus tells her, "IF YOU KNEW THE GIFT OF GOD, AND WHO IT IS THAT IS SAYING TO YOU, `GIVE ME A DRINK,' YOU WOULD HAVE ASKED HIM, AND HE WOULD HAVE GIVEN YOU LIVING WATER." Jesus, the bread of life and the living water, reveals His glory to the Samaritan woman, and through her to all of us until the end of times: "WHOEVER DRINKS OF THE WATER THAT I SHALL GIVE HIM WILL NEVER THIRST; THE WATER THAT I SHALL GIVE HIM WILL BECOME IN HIM A SPRING OF WATER WELLING UP TO ETERNAL LIFE." The Samaritan ends up recognizing Jesus as the “Savior of the world,” and many believed in Him because of the woman’s testimony. Ave Maria! March 11, 2023, Prodigal Son, Holy Rosary (Joyful Mysteries)

Friends of the Rosary: The story of the Prodigal Son is featured in the Gospel today (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32). It’s the story of each human life: God’s mercy stands on one side and the unfaithfulness of man on the other. “Father, I have sinned.” Penance alone can save us. Our Father welcomes us with mercy. The sin and its eternal punishment are forgiven. The Father receives us again as His children and celebrates a joyful banquet with us at Holy Communion. The story of the Prodigal Son is an urgent call to repentance, self-examination, and conversion. Our God is prodigal. His very nature is to give, the God who simply is divine love. Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary: Mankind's resistance to God’s goodness and grace is evidence that we are still affected by the original sin. The parable of the landowner who planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants (Matt 21:33-46) — that we read today — highlights the unfortunate reality of our fallen world, which is controlled by the Evil One. Despite the Father's desire to save us from our sins, we continue to reject His offer of salvation. Sin continues to destroy us both now and forever. Our resistance to God's plan is rooted in our aversion to the Cross. We often prefer a life filled with pleasures. We fail to comprehend the concept of salvific suffering. Accepting the Cross is the key to living a fulfilled life on earth. Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary: The contemplation of the Transfiguration, which we meditate on today, reveals to us what will happen when we leave this earthly life and behold Christ in His glory, welcoming us into His everlasting, glorious kingdom. As we approach April 9th, the solemnity of the Resurrection, we are reminded that the end of our earthly journey is the resurrection, which is a gateway to a magnificent life with the risen Jesus. The Cross is the portal to eternity. Christians who embrace their crosses with a willing heart understand the true value of life, having surrendered themselves to know the value of their lives. Friends of the Rosary: Jesus Christ provided us through the mother of the sons of Zebedee — John and James — an important rule of life, as we read today (Mt 20:17-2): "RATHER, WHOEVER WISHES TO BE GREAT AMONG YOU SHALL BE YOUR SERVANT; WHOEVER WISHES TO BE FIRST AMONG YOU SHALL BE YOUR SLAVE. JUST SO, THE SON OF MAN DID NOT COME TO BE SERVED BUT TO SERVE AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE AS A RANSOM FOR MANY." This is in line with what He spoke to the apostles on the reading of Tuesday (Mt 23:1-12): "WHOEVER EXALTS HIMSELF WILL BE HUMBLED, BUT WHOEVER HUMBLES HIMSELF WILL BE EXALTED." Friends of the Rosary: Jesus Christ spoke at that time about the hypocrisy of the scribes and the Pharisees (Mt 23:1-12). “DO AND OBSERVE ALL THINGS WHATSOEVER THEY TELL YOU, BUT DO NOT FOLLOW THEIR EXAMPLE. FOR THEY PREACH BUT THEY DO NOT PRACTICE. THEY TIE UP HEAVY BURDENS HARD TO CARRY AND LAY THEM ON PEOPLE'S SHOULDERS, BUT THEY WILL NOT LIFT A FINGER TO MOVE THEM. ALL THEIR WORKS ARE PERFORMED TO BE SEEN.” Friends, like the scribes and Pharisees, we can lead our lives to please the world. In fact, most people are more concerned about what others say or think than what pleases God. However, true life is based on serving and glorifying the Divine. Friends of the Rosary: St. Philip Neri provides us with insight into how the mind of God operates: “Cast yourself into the arms of God and be very sure that if He wants anything of you, He will fit you for the work and give you strength.” In essence, this means that we must first place our trust in Christ Jesus. Secondly, we must listen to Him both in prayer and through His actions. Friends of the Rosary: Sin demands reparation. It's a part of our atonement to God. Reparation can come in the form of penance and sacrifices. It is a ransom for our personal and collective sins, in imitation of the Lamb of God who gave his life on the Cross for us. Jesus Christ defeated death and sin through sacrifice and service to our fellow men. He emptied himself to restore the order of divine creation. Friends of the Rosary: Before the joy and glory of Easter, we have first to go through forty days of the Lent journey. It’s a time to recover our real self and more real life, so we will be better prepared to share Christ’s glory. Christ preached penance and prayer to enter the Church. Our world is drowning in sin and vice and it needs to confess its sins and obtain forgiveness. This is what happened to the Ninevites, as Jesus reminds us in the Gospel today (Lk 11:29-32). The people of Nineveh did penance at the preaching of Jonah the prophet and obtained divine mercy and pardon. An entire city — a New York of ancient times — repented. Nineveh is a model for Lent. Friends of the Rosary: It's not about the number of words in prayer. It's about the quality of prayer. Jesus encouraged us — as we read today in the Gospel (Mt 6:7-15) — to pray faithfully, and silently, because "Your Father knows what you need before you ask him." Prayer is a humble exercise of self-recognition of our fragility.  We ask the Lord to help us to express ourselves with silent love every time we don't know what to say in prayer. Ave Maria! Friends of the Rosary: Adam’s temptations in the Garden of Eden are the same that we face today. He wanted to be like God. He also wanted power and pleasure. The Devil offered him appealing ways. Later, in his forty days in the desert, Jesus Christ faced temptations in flesh and spirit, rejecting them by following the Word of God. Jesus, the new Adam, proposed to us a new life plan based on service and love for one another. That’s the revolution that Jesus brought: humility, charity, worshiping God, hope, and joy. February 26, 2023, First Sunday of Lent, Holy Rosary (Glorious Mysteries)

Friends of the Rosary: Today, on the first Sunday of Lent, we reflect upon the temptations that Jesus Christ suffered in the desert. Matthew the Evangelist (Mt 4:1-11) described how the devil approached Our Lord: “At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread." He said in reply, "IT IS WRITTEN: ONE DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT COMES FORTH FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD." Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you and with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone. "Jesus answered him, "AGAIN IT IS WRITTEN, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test." Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me." At this, Jesus said to him, "GET AWAY, SATAN! IT IS WRITTEN: THE LORD, YOUR GOD, SHALL YOU WORSHIP AND HIM ALONE SHALL YOU SERVE." Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! + Mikel A.

Friends of the Rosary: The Forty Days of Jesus Christ in the desert is an invitation to step aside from our ordinary rhythm of life in order to be more open to the Holy Spirit. The goal is to convert ourselves by walking with Christ with the sorrows and temptations of life. This ancient tradition of the Church set this "stepping aside" practice as a primary characteristic of Lent. And in this season of Lent, the three practices of almsgiving, fasting, and intensified prayer (along with reflection and spiritual readings) go together. Friends of the Rosary: Yesterday, we honored Sts. Francisco and Jacinta Marto, two of three children of Fatima, along with Lucia Santos. In 1917, the three shepherds saw the Blessed Virgin Mary at Cova da Iria, near Fatima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. They were asked by the Virgin to learn to read and write and to pray the rosary The brother and sister Francisco, 11, and Jacinta, 10, were the youngest non-martyrs to be canonized in the history of the Church. During the first apparition, which took place May 13, 1917, Our Lady asked the three children to say the Rosary and to make sacrifices, offering them for the conversion of sinners. The children did, praying often, giving their lunch to beggars, and going without food themselves. They offered up their daily crosses and even refrained from drinking water on hot days. In October 1918, Francisco and Jacinta became seriously ill with the Spanish flu. Our Lady appeared to them and said she would take them to heaven soon. Bed-ridden, Francisco requested his first Communion. The following day, Francisco died, April 14, 1919. Jacinta suffered a long illness as well. She was eventually transferred to a Lisbon hospital and operated on for an abscess in her chest, but her health did not improve. She died on Feb. 20, 1920. Francisco and Jacinta died offering their suffering for the conversion of sinners, peace in the world, and the Holy Father. Her cousin, Lucia dos Santos, became a Carmelite nun and was still living when Jacinta and Francisco were beatified in 2000. Sister Lucia died five years later. It was on May 13, 2000, on the 83rd anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima when Pope John Paul II beatified Francisco and Jacinta. It’s not just about loving our family members and friends who love us. It’s about knowing that as children of God and members of the human family, we should strive to be icons of Jesus Christ. When faced with people who try to impose their ungodly secular values on us, we respond with prayers. We don’t ignore their silent pain and suffering—they are far from God.
