Conversation with Ace Frehley - Ep568

We return this week with a conversation with the one and only Ace Frehley! With the recent chart success of his latest solo album '10,000 Volts,' Ace is doing the podcast rounds and we wanted to hop on board ourselves. With our long-running fandom of KISS, this was an entertaining talk that we're excited to share with you. In this discussion Ace shares some backstory on the new album, his collaboration with Steve Brown, the updated 'Back Into My Arms Again,' and more. Additionally, we ask Ace about numerous moments in KISStory including his friendships within the New York rock scene of the 70's, the early camaradarie within the band and when it changed, the infamous Tom Snyder appearance, his friendship with John Belushi, memories of the KISS crew, the rise of AI, aliens and UFOs, and a lot more! If you haven't purchased it yet, pick up the new album 10,000 Volts at https://mnrkheavy.com/products/ace-frehley-10-000-volts-cd Special thanks to Tim Bream and Giovanna at MNRK Heavy for their assistance in setting up this interview. Metal Shop Memories with Charlie Kendall - Ep565

This week radio legend Charlie Kendall joins us to discuss the past, present, and future of Metal Shop! From 1984-1995, broadcast superstar Kendall was a driving force of the metal revolution as he hosted this iconic program on over 250 stations. Metalshop was to rock radio what Headbanger’s Ball was to television. Now, he’s joined forces with KRFK Radio (a division of Keel’s RFK Media) to deliver new shows to a worldwide audience that celebrates and enjoys the music of the wild and the young. In this discussion Charlie covers the history of Metal Shop; how he got the idea, how it was pitched, and how Judas Priest played a big role in the show getting green-lit. The show became an institution for rock and metal fans and the genre grew exponentially in popularity throughout the 1980's. As with the music, the rock radio world went through a tidal wave of changes in the 1990's and Metal Shop was not spared. Charlie shares his thoughts on how the show ended, the state of radio in today's society, and his take on music podcasting and it's marketability going forward. Other topics covered include Charlie's early experience in radio at the age of 14, his work with NEWHD Media and it's charitable efforts for people with autism, and more. Stories involving Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Dee Snider, Artie Kornfeld, and Alice Cooper are also included. Throughout the episode you'll hear clips from the the heyday of Metal Shop to help take you back in time. For now though, you can check out the all new Metal Shop on KFRK Radio! The full Metal Shop broadcast schedule can also be found at charliekendall.com. You've got to check it out, it's everything you loved about the show brought into today! The Best & Worst of Warrant - Ep563

We're back this week to discuss a band that experienced highs, lows, and tragedy throughout their career as we pick The Best & Worst of Warrant. Warrant, formed in Hollywood in 1984, would go through changes in their early years that would lead to recruiting then-Plain Jane members Jani Lane and Steven Sweet into the band. A false start under Prince, a soundtrack appearance, and touring would result in the band getting signed to Columbia Records. 1989's 'Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich' would spawn several hit singles including 'Down Boys,' 'Big Talk,' and 'Heaven' with the latter hitting #2 on Billboard. The doors would blow wide open with the release of 1990's 'Cherry Pie,' a song that was a blessing and a curse to the band. Controversy would also follow the band on their first two albums with British guitarist Mike Slamer being rumored to handle all guitar parts in the studio. 1992 would see musical tides shifting amid the release of 'Dog Eat Dog,' a tougher album produced by Michael Wagener. Things would stranger and more experimental with the band's 1995 and 1996 releases, 'Ultraphobic' and 'Belly to Belly' respectively. The band would flame out and briefly reunite before shifting singers twice more. Lead singer Jani Lane would tragically pass away to alcohol poisoning in 2011. We cover the Jani Lane lane era of Warrant this week and discuss those albums as well as the new tracks on Greatest & Latest (1999) and Under the Influence (2001) while picking what we deem to be the best and worst track off each. There's a lot to cover on and off the stage with this band and we think you'll enjoy our discussion. Let us know what your Best & Worst of Warrant is in the comments! Label Wars (1980-1984) - Ep555

This week we look back to a time when the music industry was, mostly, run through a handful of record labels. With big money to be made, record companies such as Capitol, Epic, Columbia, and Atlantic wielded a lot of power. Buyouts were happening such as in the case of Polygram acquiring Casablanca Records which would result in a very in-flux KISS winding up on Mercury Records. Smaller labels, while limited financially, were successful at times due to scouting new talent and breaking it. This circumstance would lead labels such as Elektra, Metal Blade, and Megaforce to be on the ground floor of some legendary careers and genres. In this discussion, we discuss all of these record labels, many of the notable artists that inhabited their rosters, how they stacked up in the rock world, and much more. The era we're focusing on this time is 1980-1984.  Was the rule and oversight of the early 80's music industry a good thing? Is today's wide open musical climate a better thing for artists? Let us know what YOU think in the comments! We hope you enjoy Label Wars (1980-1984) and SHARE with a friend. Decibel Geek is a proud member of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Contact Us! The End of KISS(?) - Ep554

With this week marking the end of KISS as a touring entity, we thought we'd serve up a Torpedo Dudes 4 All! This is Decibel Geek's KISS-exclusive podcast and there's plenty to discuss!   KISS recently had to cancel shows in Ottawa, Toronto, and Knoxville due to Paul Stanley contracting the flu. The band got back on track for Indianapolis and is moving forward with the final dates. Between the Ottawa and Toronto cancellations a tragic car accident/explosion made news as a possible terror attack. How does this (potentially) relate to KISS? Listen to find out.   As the band prepares for this weekend's final shows at Madison Square Garden, we discuss our thoughts on the current lineup, how we got to our opinions, and the multiple KISS-themed doings in NYC this week. Activities discussed include the NYC KISS takeover and, of course, the shows themselves.   It was confirmed recently that no ex-members, including Bruce Kulick, will be guesting at the shows. Will there be any surprises or shakeups for these landmark shows? We give our predictions. Speaking of ex-members, Ace Frehley released the title track to his upcoming album '10,000 Volts' which is due next February. We give our reactions to the new single, our hopes for the album, and more.   We hope you enjoy Torpedo Dudes 4 All and consider joining us on Patreon as a DBG VIP! Brushes With Greatness - Ep548

We're back with a new edition of Brushes With Greatness! This time, our friend bassist Rik Fox (Steeler/Freakshow) joins us to share some of his run-ins with the famous/infamous. If you didn't already know, Rik was a part of the 1970's New York rock scene as well as the 80's Sunset Strip heyday. Additionally, time spent working in the film industry made it even more likely to have run-ins with well-known people on a regular basis. In this discussion, Rik Fox shares his brushes with greatness. From his days as a fan through his days in the industry, you'll get stories of interaction with David Lee Roth, Sam Kinison, Eric Carr, Ronnie James Dio, Pat Thrall, and many others. It's a fun conversation that we think you're gonna really dig. Rik is the new bassist in Freakshow; a band featuring Ronnie Borchert, Carlos Cavazo, and Stet Howland. The Best & Worst of Led Zeppelin Part 2 (1974-1982) - Ep544

We're back to discuss the second half of the Led Zeppelin discography as we pick our Best & Worst tracks from each album. Led Zeppelin's career from 1974-1982 was a period of great success, with the band releasing some of their most iconic albums, including Physical Graffiti, Presence, and In Through the Out Door. They also toured extensively during this time, playing to sold-out crowds around the world. However, the band's success was not without its challenges. In 1977, drummer John Bonham died suddenly, leaving the band devastated. They eventually regrouped and released one more album, Coda, in 1982, but they never fully recovered from Bonham's death. The band disbanded in 1980. In this episode we each pick what we think is the best song and worst song from each album during this period. Will we agree? Will we argue? You'll have to listen to find out! Let us know what YOUR best and worst songs are for each of these albums in the comments section! Alternate KISStory - Ep540

July may be over but KISSmas isn't as we time travel to another dimension with Alternate KISStory. Imagine, if you will, KISStory playing out differently. Imagine that certain albums were never released. Imagine the original band splitting up at a different time; and the subsequent solo efforts. Imagine certain replacement members never entering the picture and a reunion tour happening at a completely different time. Imagine a reunion album being released in a different era. It's interesting to think about and that's what we did. Thanks to a brilliant idea by Aaron Camaro and a fully-fleshed out alternate history, we present to you what might have taken place in a different dimension. Different, but still plausible. Additionally, Chris and Aaron will reveal their idea for a reunion album by KISS in a much different era. You'll get the album title and tracklist. Also, be sure to check the Decibel Geek social media pages for reveals of their album artwork! We'd love to hear your thoughts on Alternate KISStory, how you think it would have differed, and what YOUR picks would be for a reunion album from the era mentioned.
