Pavel Pisklakov — designer, typographer and educator. Born, lives and works in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Assistant Professor at the South Ural State University. Received a degree in Applied Maths, Pavel Pisklakov deeply engaged in the study of communication design. Specializes in posters, identity, and typography. His works were exhibited all over the world: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Czech Republic, Mexico, Montenegro, Liechtenstein, Iran, Ecuador, South Korea, China, Hungary, Poland, Peru, Estonia, Slovakia, Uruguay, Italy, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Bulgaria, Croatia, Taiwan, Indonesia, Macedonia, USA, Thailand, Spain, Austria, Germany, Finland, Bolivia, Iraq, Japan, Denmark, Serbia, etc. Received several national and international awards, among them: Winner of “50 Books | 50 Covers 2018” organized by AIGA and Design Observer, Honorary award at 11th International Triennale of Eco-Poster “4th block”, Excellence Award at 3rd Contemporary Ink Design Biennale on Beijing Design Week 2020 and Excellence Award at Ink Art & Pattern on Beijing Design Week 2019, several Silver Awards and Honorable mentions in Graphis Design Annuals and Graphis Poster Annuals. Over the years he teaches courses in computer science, computer graphics, typography, principles of art and design, statistics and methods of mathematical modeling. He has held lectures and workshops about newspaper, magazine and poster design, history of the poster and communication design for different audiences. Pavel’s students were winners and finalists of different poster competitions (Poster for Tomorrow, ISPC Skopje, etc.). Design education, integration of math methods and design, exploration of new technologies in media, typography is the field of his research. He speaks at different international design conferences, in particular, he was the only Russian speaker at the international conference on typography Face Forward (2015, Dublin, Ireland), World Design Congress during World Design Summit (2017, Montreal, Canada), 7th International Conference on Typography and Visual Communication (2019, Patras, Greece). He has also organized and hosted many design events in Chelyabinsk, among them such world-known exhibitions as TDC’s Best Typography, Tolerance Poster Show, annual Poster for Tomorrow exhibitions. He has been a member of the jury and preselection committees of Poster For Tomorrow, A’Design Award & Competition, Adobe Design Achievement Awards, Grand Prix Du Design, C-IDEA Design Award, etc. He served as vice dean of Faculty of Service and Tourism at South Ural State University (2008-2013) Member of ATypI, AIGA, Russia Designers Association, C-IDEA, CEIDA and RINCrea. Pontus Wärnestål (he/him) is an award-winning Service Designer and Human-Computer Interaction researcher, with 20 years of work experience in User Experience, Service Design, and Human-Centered AI. He is the author of 40+ scientific papers and books, including "Designing AI-Powered Services" (available at Studentlitteratur in Swedish and English). Pontus is passionate about teaching and an experienced public speaker and writes about design, value, and AI. As Head of AI Design & Innovation at Swedish AI agency eghed, Pontus fuses design strategy with AI, focusing on devising deep, human-centric solutions that not only make sense but make a difference. In addition, Pontus serves as Deputy Professor at Halmstad University. This dual role creates a unique synergy, marrying cutting-edge research and innovation with responsible and practical application and learning. Pawel Pokutycki (PL/NL) is an interaction designer, researcher and lecturer at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague and Design Academy Eindhoven, The Netherlands. In 2005 he initiated early activities of the RFID Lab, later called the AR+RFID Lab, an experimental interdisciplinary platform for research in the application of Augmented Reality (AR) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies in the field of art and design. He is a core member of the Alternative Learning Tank (ALT), a nomadic school and artistic organization that focuses on research, creation and implementation of didactical programs on progressive and radical fields of knowledge which are often neglected by educational institutions. His recent projects focus on exploring relationships between new media theory, political, social, cultural and environmental studies by concept development and prototyping for interactive media. He believes in a methodology of design based on his own, peculiar interpretation of the Black Box Theory presented at a TEDx event in 2012. Currently he is conducting multidisciplinary research on "Humane Technology for the Global South: Ethics of Interaction Design in the (post)Colonial Context”, besides Europe frequently lecturing and giving masterclasses in such countries as Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, India and China. In 2022 he received the Impact: Climate Award from ITAC (International Teaching Artists Collaborative) for educational work with youth on environmental issues based on experimental use of new digital technologies. He is also a board member of ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts), advisor for Digital Culture in the Creative Industries Fund NL (Stimuleringsfonds) and a nominator to the Prins Claus Award. Tony graduated from Middlesex University in 1984 gaining a first in graphic design. He began work in the studio of his tutor Peter Gill. Eventually this association formalised into the design consultancy Root 2 Design (https://www.root2design.com). The consultancy was involved in many large-scale initiatives such as devising the visual identity and implementation for the London Research Centre. Tony was both an associate of Root 2 Design but also worked in a freelance capacity with clients such as the Icebreaker music ensemble; Decca Records; Andrew Haig Associates and the Institute for the Study of Drug Dependency. Tony co-organised the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) lecture series between 2000-2003. The series culminated with a lecture by Rosmarie Tissi held at the Cochrane Theatre. He co-organised the accompanying 100+3 posters exhibition from Siegfried Odermatt’s collection. In 2017 Tony interviewed pre-eminent book designer Jost Hochuli in front of a sell-out audience. At this event he was awarded a Fellowship of the ISTD. He was the former managing editor of ISTD’s Typographic journal. He has been a board member and is currently on the education committee. In 2004 Tony co-curated Future Map for the University of the Arts London, which was part of the London Design Festival. In 2007 he was commissioned by innovative music ensemble Icebreaker to design the packaging of a commemorative CD for the composer Philip Glass. In 2012, Tony presented a paper at Cyprus University of Technologys first International Conference on Semiotics and Visual Communication. He was invited onto the organising and scientific committee for the 2020 conference. He was also featured in the film Visual Rhetoric, a collaborative project between London College of Communication and the London School of Economics (LSE). Tony has written numerous articles for publications such as Eye, Computer Arts and Typographic. In 2016 he was published in Taking a Line for a Walk (assignments in design education). Tony has taught in many capacities over the years. His tutors Andrew Haig and Peter Gill both maintained professional practice whilst undertaking visiting lecturer roles. This connection between design education and the associated profession was formed early on in his outlook as a result. Tony cites Geoff White as an influence on his approach to the teaching of fundamental principles of design. Tony was course leader for the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma Design for Visual Communication courses at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. In 2020 Tony decided to embark on a new phase, away from employment in formal higher education, to explore his own personal work and collaborations locally with independent educators at The Margate School. He is currently completing a book with Ian McLaren on the subject of post World War Two Modernist graphic design in Britain. The book encompasses: societal developments; important schools; influential organisations; profiles of key individuals; and a discussion relating to an ongoing attitudinal legacy. Alex is an internationally recognised creative education practitioner with an extensive career that stretches over twenty-five years. His work encompasses an extensive portfolio of international education development, creative project management, artist mentoring and educational policy-making. In the UK, Alex played a key role in steering influential campaigns such as ‘Youth Arts Transforms Lives – FACT,’ benefiting from input and direction from the late Sir Ken Robinson as chair. Nikolic is a Full Professor and Chair of the Graduate User Experience (UX) Design Program at the College For Creative Studies, Detroit, United States. He is an experimental designer, interactive media artist, and digital media expert with a PhD in Digital Media and an MBA. His research focuses on mixed-experiential reality, singularity, human-AI interaction, artificial intelligence emancipation, intelligent interfaces, robot creativity, AI aesthetics, and design for behavioral changes. He mixes immersive virtual worlds, artificial intelligence, and responsive environments to engage audiences in new interactive experiences and media perceptions. Before joining the College For Creative Studies, Dr. Nikolic was a Professor at the University of the Bahamas, ShanghaiTech University, Shantou University, Dean of Faculty of Digital Production at Educons University, Adjunct Professor at Bergen Academy of Art and Design, Chinese Academy of Art and Malaysia Multimedia University. He is a founder of AI.R Lab and served as principal investigator at Shanghai Tech University, a senior research fellow at IDM Lab and a researcher at Aalto University Finland. During his 20-year career in the interactive media creative industry, he was director of digital and digital creative director for creative agencies such as Grey Worldwide, J. Walter Thomson, Ogilvy Mather, and Ogilvy Group. I studied for five years in total at art school in the 1970s, Graphic Design and Illustration. At Maidstone College of Art my tutors included Greenaway Medal-winning Gerald Rose and, by contrast, Brian Eno. I worked solely as a freelance illustrator for 15-20 years, across most areas of the field while gradually takin on part-time teaching alongside my practice, eventually taking on Course Leader role for BA Illustration. I was always mystified as to why so little attention was given to childrens book illustration and decided to design and take through validation the worlds first MA Childrens Book Illustration programme, which grew rapidly to a cohort of 180 students from around the world. Lisa Winstanley is an Assistant Professor in the School of Art Design and Media. For the past decade she worked internationally as a design educator, however her academic career is also underpinned by over 20 years of commercial experience; working in the UK as a creative practitioner and design consultant. As a visual communicator, Lisa’s work has won many prestigious design awards including, 3 A’ Design Awards 2020, a Platinum Award at the annual Spark Design Awards 2020 and her branding work has been placed in the top 25 International Graphic Designs of both 2019 and 2020 in the Creative Quarterly journal best 100 Annual. Her work has been showcased in exhibitions internationally, in venues such as the Oculus in New York City, Barcelona, Zurich, Mexico and China. Lisa’s work is part of the permanent collections at MOOD - Museum of Outstanding Design. Italy and The Chicago Athenaeum Museum Collection. Lisa’s research reviews the intersections between ethical & collaborative design practices and pedagogies. She is interested in investigating multidisciplinary collaborations which allow designers to work together with society, to produce life-centric design solutions for society. Cal Swann attended art school in his hometown at Leicester College of Art in 1951. Specialising in typography under Tom Westley for the last three years, he gained the National Diploma in Design (Typography) and Full Tech C&G in Typographic Design in 1956. RAF National Service followed, and then quick career moves in print design, a couple of advertising agencies and eventually lecturing. Job chasing took him to London and elsewhere around UK. He produced his first book Techniques of Typography in 1969 while lecturing at Manchester College of Art and Design. An interest in linguistics was enhanced with an MA in Applied Linguistics, Lancaster in 1986, resulting in his second book Language and Typography in 1991, also with Lund Humphries. Cal was Head of Graphic Design at Saint Martin’s School of Art in Covent Garden from 1981-86 and his last position in UK was as Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Art and Design at Liverpool Polytechnic. He moved to Australia in 1989 as Head of Design at the University of South Australia where he was awarded a Professorship in Typographic Design. Cal was in 1996 appointed Professor of Design at Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia where he launched the first totally online Master of Design in 1998. Retiring from fulltime professoring in 2001, he was still active in design and teaching and developed and taught three typographic design units online for Virtu Design Institute until 2019. He is continuing writing and designing (and playing a little amateur jazz on vibraphone) and enjoying a relaxed retirement with his wife Sandra, about 50K south of Perth and next to the Bush, in Western Australia. Professor Ting Chawchen is a scholar who play a role in leading Chinese design education into the future in addressing the needs of both local and global community. His knowledge and understating come from his years of pedagogical experience in learning and working abroad, he generates international perspective to better interpret cultural differences and apply to his jobs in daily basis. He’s engagement in design practice focuses on solutions for aging, health and wellbeing in contemporary society achieved through interdisciplinary collaboration. He is the funding person of the successful global exchange initiative the Design Day Marathon initiated in 2016. This interdisciplinary design project brings together academics and students from learning institutes across the globe and has facilitated engagement in the development of innovative design solutions for significant social issues such as longevity, sustainable life and wellbeing. Prof Duri is a published author, translator, artist, and educator, having taught in Architecture, Interior Design, Health Sciences and the Built Environment and History and Theory of Art and Architecture for twenty years. Prof. Duri practiced architecture and interior design for a decate in New York City with specialization in the design and construction of health facilities and hospitals before being appointed overseas (UAE) to start up programs in Architectural Engineering and Interior Design (University of Sharjah and the New York Institute of Technology). His appointment at NYIT was as Associate Professor and Assistant Dean at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in Abu Dhabi, and Strategic Advisor for the Middle East, while also teaching conducting administrative duties, and pursuing his research interests. As of 2016, Duri is at the academic rank of Full Professor. Many of his articles were published in architecture and design journals through international conferences on architecture, humanities, and the arts. Professor Duri also provided editorial contributions to several newspapers and periodicals such as the New York Times, Herald Tribune, Architectural Digest, and the National in the UAE. As an artist, Professor Duri had his own art exhibitions and participated in others in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, New York City, and London, in addition to the acquisition of some of his paintings in the permanent collection of the Fischer Fine Arts Library at the University of Pennsylvania. Private collections acquiring his paintings include the Ruling Family of the United Arab Emirates. Prof. Duri has received several academic awards on consecutive years by the International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics (IIAS) in Germany and is Member of the Board of Directors. Presently, Professor Duri is the Dean of the College of Design at the American University in the Emirates in addition to his honorary appointment as Visiting Research Professor at the IIAS working on several research projects and works of art. Shalini Prasad is an educator, integrative designer, brand consultant, and graphic artist. She runs her own design practice under DeSha Consulting and teaches visual communication and typography at the College of Art and Design at Lesley University. In addition to her professional and academic roles, she is a classical trained dancer, and actor. After graduating as Industrial Designer Justus Theinert carried out a one year field inquiry on “Methodology and didactics in European design education”, visiting the leading design schools in Europe. Later he participated as Research Fellow in the project “Design quality of engineer-buildings” at the University Stuttgart, investigating the phenomenon of Gestalt-quality in engineer buildings. He then became an Assistant Professor at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart where he was in charge of the development and establishment of the “Master of European Design” program and project manager within the design network “Four Motors for Europe” (Baden-Wurttemberg, Catalunya, Lombardy, Rhône-Alpes). At the same time he became Senior Designer and Partner in the studio “Prof. Wulf Schneider & Partner” with focus on the development of office furniture, interior and transportation design. In 1996 he founded the “Studio for innovation-management and product development.” After several projects for Mercedes-Benz, he was offered the position of Senior Designer at corporate design studio of DaimlerChrysler AG, where he was responsible for three dimensional aspects of corporate design such as POS furniture, accessories as well as brand strategy. In 2001 Theinert was appointed Full Professor for Industrial Design and Design Theory at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences where he managed the faculty as Dean from 2007 to 2010. 2004 consultant for design promotion and design education development in Jordan in collaboration with Yarmouk University, Irbid and the German Research Foundation (DFG). Inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller he took ten years to educate himself in geometry and math seeing that it all goes back to the image we draw of the circle. The next thirty-two years he has been exploring folding circles with people interested. Without any degree, and no certification, he taught folding circles in and out of classrooms, from first grade through college level, working with teachers, presenting internationally a new approach to geometry and mathematics, a new way to do and think about what we do. During that time, he has written seven books and has published papers on folding circles. He calls this approach Wholemovement, folding the circle for information. It is comprehensive through the hand-on experience of folding the circle as unity and observing what is revealed. This is about the transforming changes of order and organization all in one place; nothing is added or taken away. Information is not constructed or put into the circle. Through a principled sequence of folding, observing, and reforming, the directives for the process are inherent to unity in the circle, it is whole. Folding the circle demonstrates spherical unity beyond all other shapes and forms. Eloïse Parrack was born in Bethesda, USA and graduated with an MA in Sequential Design in 2006 from the University of Brighton. Kenan Zekic is a design educator and multidisciplinary designer interested in social impact design. Until July 2021, he worked as a Full Professor at the International University of Sarajevo. Currently, he is starting a nonprofit organization INDI+E (Innovation, Design + Education), and works as an independent design consultant and creative director in a publishing house "Vrijeme". He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo, received his master's degree in the UK, and was a Fulbright scholar in the US. His academic and professional focus has been on design and technology relationships and practices in underdeveloped regions. As a book lover and designer, he has dedicated creative efforts to improving book readers' experience. From 2017-2020, he was a local leader of the IxDA Interaction Design Association Chapter in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2019 he was a Cumulus + awardee. His works and projects have been presented and exhibited in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Turkey, Serbia, South Korea, Iran, and the USA. Lia Vilahur Chiaraviglio is currently the Director of International at ERAM College, Girona, and a Graphic Designer. During her professional career she worked as: interior architect, industrial- graphic designer, and managing multidisciplinary teams. She co-founded and managed together with Eric Olivares the design studio, Inlightdesign SCP. As an artist, she works mainly with collage and acrylics and sometimes with watercolour and woodprints. She participates in international congress and teaches workshops for different design faculties in Latin America, Asia and Europe. Andrew Brewerton recently retired as Principal & Chief Executive of Plymouth College of Art and was founding Chair of Governors of Plymouth School of Creative Arts. He has served on numerous national bodies including the National Council of Arts Council England, the Creative Industry Federation’s UK Advisory Council, and was Vice-Chair of the Prime Minister’s Initiative (PMI2) for International Education. He is currently Chair of Trustees of Plymouth Arts Cinema and an Advisor to the Cultural Learning Alliance. He has lectured and published widely internationally and was Distinguished Professor of Shanghai Academy of Fine Art and an Advisory Board member of the Shanghai International Art City (SIAC) project. A book-length monograph on his contribution to Art & Design education in China, was published in Shanghai in 2011. A former Principal of Dartington College of Arts, and Dean of Art & Design at the University of Wolverhampton, his work since 1994 in acadæmia followed a decade in glass design and manufacturing, latterly as head of design and development at Dartington Crystal (UK). Eduardo Martres is Associate Professor of Practice in Industrial Design at Xi’an JiaotongLiverpool University, a joint venture between the University of Liverpool from the UK and the Xi’an Jiaotong University of China, located in the city of Suzhou (China). From 2012 to 2017, he has been the Chief Industrial Designer for Changhong Electric, based in Chengdu (China). In 2015 Eduardo was awarded the The People’s Republic of China Friendship Award, the highest recognition given by the Chinese government to foreign experts who have made major contributions to the economic and social development of China.
