GBH Early Edition Friday May 28th, 2021

For the final time…good Friday morning from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Yes it’s true, after four years hosting Morning Edition on GBH Radio and hanging out with a group of crazy early risers for “The Best Ten Minutes in Radio”, Joe Mathieu is moving on in his broadcasting career and wrapping things up at GBH after today. We remember all the good times and wish Joe well as he moves on, and recognize the synergy of it happening as Covid-19 restrictions end this weekend in Massachusetts. Our audience at 4:50AM really began to grow with the insomnia that this pandemic brought, so closing out this show as restrictions end just seems fitting. Best of luck to Joe Mathieu and THANK YOU for everything. Early Edition will indeed be ending for now, but please stay tuned to GBH Radio for Morning Edition and what comes next.

GBH Early Edition Thursday May 27th, 2021

Good morning, and welcome to Thursday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Early Edition team. We’re waking up with a little rain, but a lot less than the Red Sox dealt with last night at Fenway… where a three hour rain delay is always fun. The Bruins know who they’ll face in the next round of the playoffs, and New Yorkers may want to be careful what they wish for. The Encore Casino is set to welcome full crowds back starting this weekend, but poker won’t be returning any time soon. And we say goodbye to a well-loved artist and author. Friday will indeed the final Early Edition with Joe Mathieu, please make sure you tune in and see him off with us. And thanks for waking up with GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Wednesday May 26th, 2021

Good morning and welcome to Wednesday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We hope you’re able to catch the “super blood moon” early this morning, but unfortunately the folks on the west coast will have the better viewing options. Many of our regular listeners are still trying to process yesterday’s announcement from Joe, but we’ve still got three mornings to spend together and we plan to make the most of them. Another tough night for the Celtics, and a former team member is lobbing bombs in anticipation of his return later this week. And get that AC up and running, 90 degree weather could return this afternoon. Thanks for waking up with Morning Edition and GBH News.

GBH Early Edition Tuesday May 25th, 2021

Good morning and welcome to Tuesday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We woke up with a beautiful moon out, and it slid nicely into a picturesque sunrise just after 5AM… these are the joys you too can experience when you wake up with Early Edition. We discuss today’s amazing forecast, a tough task for the Celtics tonight and whether or not masks will now have staying power in our pandemic changed society. Plus we wrap up today’s show with an important announcement you’ll want to hear concerning our ringer leader Joe and our Early Edition family. Thanks once again for waking up with GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Monday May 24th, 2021

Good Monday morning, thanks for starting your work week with Joe Mathieu and GBH’s Morning Edition. If you couldn’t stay up last night, you missed out on watching the Boston Bruins advance to round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs… and they did it with style in a 3 to 1 victory. The numbers are so good right now in MA for Covid that you can now walk in pretty much anywhere without an appointment, so now the pre-registration websites will close, and if you need it the state will come to you… yes covid-vaccine house calls are about to be a reality. As always, thank you for starting your day with GBH News and GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Friday May 21st, 2021

Good Friday morning and thank you for waking up with Joe Mathieu and GBH’s Morning Edition team. Get yourself ready for summer-like temperatures this weekend… fire up those grills, open up those pools and reserve a spot in the sun. So when was your last handshake? With many businesses and establishments (including houses of worship) set to open up to further, we ask how you are feeling about life getting back to “normal” as things open up to larger crowds and the pandemic winds down Plus we have a few suggestions for what to do this over the next few days. Have an amazing weekend and thank you for tuning in to GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Thursday May 20th, 2021

Good morning and welcome to Thursday, aka Little Friday, a term coined by Joe Mathieu and the GBH Early Edition team. Even with mask use about to be reduced dramatically, we’re happy for the allergy sufferers out there for the new found acceptance of face coverings, because apparently it’s been helping with seasonal allergies this Spring. We woke up to some good sports news after a late night for the Boston Bruins. The incentives being offered to individuals still hesitant to get the vaccine have been steadily increasing, and today free ice cream takes center stage… on this crew we’re hoping for soft-serve. Thanks for waking up with us on Early Edition, and thanks for tuning in to GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Wednesday May 19th, 2021

Good morning and welcome to Wednesday from Joe Mathieu and our now smaller GBH Morning Edition team. Team is a loose term these days as we are down to two full time co-hosts with Shelby moving on to bigger and better things. But fear not, before too long we will be adding new cast members because this is definitely more than just a two person operation. We have lobster on the brain this morning… we’re not sure why exactly, but details are within. We have the latest news to help you jump start your day, including Dunkin’ stepping up to entice seniors who have yet to be vaccinated. Thanks for waking up with GBH Radio and Early Edition, have a great day.

GBH Early Edition Tuesday May 18th, 2021

Good morning and welcome to Tuesday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We are welcoming back an Early Edition graduate this morning, but the happiness of that reunion is short lived, as today we announce the graduation of yet another Early Edition mainstay… Godspeed Shelby, you will absolutely be missed around these parts. We also discuss the big news about the end of Covid restrictions and our hesitancy around the lifting of restrictions. But we close out the day wishing Shelby well as she moves on to bigger and better things. Thanks for tuning in, and stay with Early Edition as we transition and soon will welcome in new teammates to our pre-5AM squad. Have a great Tuesday from GBH Radio and GBH News.

GBH Early Edition Monday May 17th, 2021

Good morning, thanks for waking up with Joe Mathieu and GBH’s Morning Edition. A few technical issues plagued our broadcast this morning, but the show must go on and we’ll get your Monday underway with the latest news you need to start fresh and get your week going. That of course includes the first day of school… in May… for many area high school students anyway. And mother nature will flip the switch from cool spring to hot this week as the temperatures will finally turn much hotter. Thanks for waking up with GBH and thanks for starting your work week with Morning Edition.

GBH Early Edition Friday May 14th, 2021

Good morning and thank you for starting your Friday with Joe Mathieu and GBH’s Early Edition. The entire Morning Edition crew is up and excited for the change in CDC policy that will soon allow those of us who have been vaccinated to walk around (in most cases) without a mask. However this easing of mask policy is entirely contingent on receiving your full vaccination regiment, and that leaves us a bit cautious about the honor system being implemented to enforce that. We discuss it all, catch you up on the latest news to head in to the weekend ahead. Thanks for waking up all week with Morning Edition and GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Thursday May 13th, 2021

Good morning and welcome to “Little Friday” as Joe Mathieu likes to call it… thanks for starting your day with GBH’s Morning Edition. The 2021 New England Patriots schedule was released late yesterday, and there are several notable games including the return of Tom Brady to Foxboro, in what promises to be a memorable reunion. Meanwhile the doors are officially open for children 12 and up to start receiving the Pfizer vaccine in Massachusetts, and that brings us one step closer to a summer where things around here are a lot closer to normal. Plus in honor of the recently approved “Vineyard Wind” project, we do a little reminiscing about windmills. Have a great Thursday, and thanks for tuning in to GBH.

GBH Early Edition Wednesday May 12th, 2021

Good morning welcome to the middle of the work week from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Pretty important news here in the Bay State yesterday as ZERO deaths from Covid-19 were reported for the first time since June of 2020. We have also reached 3 million fully vaccinated citizens and continue to lead the country in many of those statistics… way to go Massachusetts! The metrics look great here, and things look even better when you look back at the headlines from a year ago, when the phrase “the new normal” was just starting to take hold. Have yourself a great Wednesday and thank you for starting your day with GBH and Morning Edition.

Good Tuesday morning, thanks for starting your day with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Karen is out today, feeling the effects of her second vaccine shot, so Joe holds it down with the rest of the staff (including longtime team member Baby Yoda). We’ll catch you up on all the news you need to start your day, including who the Bruins will face in the playoffs, and a big opening out in Worcester today. Plus people 12 years old and up can now get their vaccine shots, as we take another step towards community immunity and the return to normalcy. Thanks for waking up with us and starting your day with GBH Radio.

Good morning, welcome to the work week from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We hope you treated the Mother’s in your lives well yesterday… at very least we hope Mom got a call from you, but hopefully a lot more than that. Some call this “Mother’s Monday”, so there’s still time to let Mom know you love her - hopefully she takes your call, unlike former Mayor Marty Walsh’s Mom. Karen is now fully vaccinated as of yesterday, but the post-dose fatigue crept in for her in real time this morning. And the area continues to re-open as vaccine numbers increase, we have details on the changes that begin today. Have a great Monday and week ahead, and thanks for starting it with GBH and Early Edition.

Plus all the news you need to start your day, and a look at what’s on tap for the weekend. Thanks for starting your mornings with GBH Radio and Morning Edition.

Good morning, welcome to Thursday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Radio Morning Edition team. We’ve got the news you need to start your day, including a Peloton recall, a change for vaccine patents and the noise problems facing Franklin Park. Get outdoors and enjoy today’s weather, it should be the pick of the week after a few days of rain. And thank you for waking up with GBH Radio and Morning Edition.

GBH Early Edition Wednesday May 5th, 2021

Good morning the midway point of the week has arrived, thanks for tuning in to Early Edition and GBH Radio. We’re caught in a wet cycle here for a few days, but your lawn and gardens definitely appreciate this Spring rain. As society begins to return to normal, we've seen some industries that have learned to adjust… in the case of one restaurant, giving each and every dining party their own private room is in the cards. Meanwhile some field reporting from our team yesterday showed us that the country is indeed returning to normal. Have a great Wednesday, and thanks for kicking it off with Joe Mathieu and GBH’s Morning Edition.

GBH Early Edition Tuesday May 4th, 2021

Good morning, welcome to Tuesday from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We start this morning with a lot of wet weather - leave yourself some extra time if you need to be somewhere this morning, because it is not pleasant on the roads. It is however the fourth of May, also known as Star Wars day, so “May the Fourth Be With You” if you’re so inclined. The large “Mass-Vax” centers in Massachusetts and around New England will soon close as we begin to reach vaccine saturation. And we didn’t actually need another good reason to go out to eat in this area, but we’ll tell you about one anyway. Have a great Tuesday, and thanks for starting it with GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Monday May 3rd, 2021

Good morning, welcome back to the work world from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. A couple more members of the program have received their second vaccine doses and are now just days away from being able to see friends and loved ones (who have also had their shots) with a few less restrictions. As vaccine saturation begins to take place and numbers begin to drop here in the Bay State and across the country, we want you to encourage everyone you know to get their shots as soon as possible. We catch you up on the latest from this past weekend and get you ready to face your Monday. Thanks for starting your week with GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Monday April 30th, 2021

Good Friday morning, thanks for starting the end of your week with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Much to the chagrin of some of our Facebook Live fans, we start with sports today as the Patriots selected the guy they coveted, Alabama Quarterback Mac Jones in the first round of the NFL Draft last night. Governor Baker detailed some of the aches and pains he felt after receiving his second dose of the Phizer vaccine, something a few of our Morning Edition team members may experience in the next couple of days. Lots of potential outdoor activities on tap for the weekend with the outdoor mask mandate expiring today, get out there and enjoy it (responsibly of course)… and thanks for making GBH part of your work week.

GBH Early Edition Thursday April 29th, 2021

Good morning, thanks for starting your Thursday with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. President Biden held his first address in front of a joint session of Congress last night and it began with a moment of historic significance. Vaccination locations across the state are starting to see lower demand, leading to some walk-in availability at many locations. Meanwhile our small crew of four is close to being fully vaccinated, and we can’t decide how we want to get together to celebrate. Have yourself a safe and productive Thursday, the weekend awaits… and thanks for waking up with GBH News.

GBH Early Edition Wednesday April 28th, 2021

Good morning, you made it to “hump day” and its all downhill from here… thanks for starting your Wednesday with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Governor Baker rolled out some new guidelines yesterday for the continued re-opening of Massachusetts, and come Friday, assuming you can properly social distance, you and yours can finally go without a mask outdoors. Good night for the local teams, two out of three anyway. Plus the rest of the news you need to start your day. Thanks for waking up with Early Edition, and GBH Radio.

GBH Early Edition Tuesday April 27th, 2021

Good Tuesday morning, thanks for starting your day with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. A rare moon took over the sky last night, we hope you got the chance to take it all in. After many predictions of a stock market crash if Joe Biden won the election, the reality is Biden’s first 100 days saw the largest period of growth for the indexes since Dwight D. Eisenhower held office. We’re expecting President Biden to issue new guidance concerning masks at some point today, and we wonder if Governor Baker will follow it up with some rules specific for Massachusetts. Have a great Tuesday, and thank you for starting your day with GBH Radio.

Good Monday morning, thanks for waking up with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition crew. If you’re up early with us, that probably means you didn’t stay up to catch the Academy Awards last night… but fear not Oscars fans, we’ve got you covered with a Monday morning recap. Plus the latest Covid numbers are in for Massachusetts, and it certainly seems like there is plenty of available vaccine appointments to go around. And this is in fact the longest Early Edition in our history this morning, as we managed to cross the 18 minute mark for the first time. Whether its the “best 10” or the “best 18”, we appreciate you waking up with GBH each morning.

Good morning, thanks for starting your Tuesday with GBH Radio’s Morning Edition. Good Monday morning and welcome back to work from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. For a second straight Patriot’s Day some Boston traditions are on hold… today would normally begin with a Revolutionary Reenactment on Lexington and Concord, and continue with the Boston Marathon, but alas those plans are once again postponed for the pandemic. At least the Red Sox marathon matinee will still begin at 11AM as scheduled… and who doesn’t love morning baseball? We recap the weekend and get you ready for your day… which is hopefully a holiday from work or school for you. Thanks for starting your week with GBH.
