I remember when my kids were little, they were constantly imitating me. Sometimes they were being cute, other times they were being sassy. I loved it either way. A father loves to see his actions, his heart and his values on display in his kids. The same is true of you and I. Our father loves to see us live as “imitators of God, in everything we do”. Intuition. Instinct. A sixth sense. A nose for what is happening that is unseen but real. A soldier says "something is not right" and they halt a platoon but in the moment they can't explain why and others don't sense what they sense. Today we might say our "spidey senses" are tingling. Military researchers call it "perceptual expertise" or the ability to recognize things in your environment reliably, automatically and quickly. Every heard the phrase "Get a whiff of that guy?" Curious way to describe picking up a "vibe" someone is throwing off. Why use our sense of smell as a metaphor to evaluate someone? It's because smells are not neutral - you judge them. Good or bad. You want more or less. You avoid or embrace them. Think fresh cut grass. Gas at the service station. Mama's sauce or apple pie. The Bible says that a Kingdom man is like an aroma that let's people know something is present that they can't see. God's man is "spreading everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of God." Starting a relationship does not pose the same challenge as staying rooted and connected in a relationship. In fact, getting into a relationship with anyone is the easy part but staying meaningfully engaged, interested, and growing in that relationship is where the biggest challenges reside. It all boils down to priorities - what we care most about will absorb our greatest focus and energies. The same thing is true about our relationship with God, his purposes, and his Kingdom - if it is a priority to stay connected to them then we will adopt a new lifestyle and attitude that insures we stay meaningfully and powerfully connected. A key and a door. Keys unlock doors. If you are given the right key you get to enter into and experience whatever is behind the door. When we hear the Parable of the Talents we typically think about money, skill, ability… What if I told you that before your wife was your wife, she was God's daughter. And God has given her to you to steward well. What happens when He comes back and wants to take a look at his investment? Will He see that your wife has become more like Christ because of you, or in spite of you? This week we're learning about stewarding our marriage well.
Dad, you’re a prophet. To be a prophet is to be God's mouthpiece. In your home, you are the primary mouthpiece of God. Like the prophets of old, your job is to speak on behalf of God. You bring God [His Word] to the people under your care. This week, we put on the mantle of prophet and we speak on behalf of God!
"So much of what is wrong in the world today is due to men who are confused. Two generations ago, men were confident in their masculinity and manhood. One generation ago, men began to compromise their masculinity and manhood. Today, men are confused about their masculinity and manhood. They have no path. We live in a time when no common definition or vision for manhood exists. Because of such, we see 5 types of men emerging… Four types of men take life, one type gives life. We want to be life-giving men.
What does it mean to be GOOD trouble? Before we can become GOOD trouble in any environment. We must ask ourselves and honestly answer; “What’s missing?” “What’s broken that I can fix?” “What’s evil that I can destroy?” “What’s good that I can persevere?” The person that possesses the greatest threat in your environment, in the spaces you occupy is YOU. Inside of every man is a warrior, a champion. But we must not only let him out, but also train him. What separates a man from being trouble and being GOOD trouble, is how he is equipped. In session 2 of “Be Good Trouble” Pastor Chris Harper discusses what it means to be GOOD trouble. And how these four questions can lead us to a pathway to develop an ethos of courage, to be God’s man.
We are living in a time when the leading feminist thought says the world needs a man like a fish need a bicycle…” At best our culture tells you you’re useless... more than not, it says you're a problem. My fear is that we believe the lie.
You and I, our peers, and our kids, have been marinated in a fully saturated consumer culture. How has that consumer culture impacted you? There’s a radical paradigm shift that God offers us that will dramatically change our relationships and lives. It’s based in God’s agape love and lifts others by investing in rather than consuming from others. Let’s ask ourselves if we can define and deliver love?“ Tip, love’s opposite is selfishness and love pays a price to do what’s best for another person. Jesus is the model and the power source for being the relationship investor God made us to be. His love needs to be received to be delivered and it includes counter-cultural concepts like choosing exclusivity and sacrificial serving. God’s paradigm creates marriage hope for the single and scared, and for the married and scarred. The same paradigm will revolutionize our fathering. To thrive as men we’re going to need Jesus’ way to beat life’s blitzes, like the secrecy and lying that detonate bombs when we get sex outside of God’s celebrated design. In the end, our best life as a man comes signing over the title deed so that we are owned and controlled by the best owner, our loving Heavenly Father.
Aren’t you glad social distancing and masking up has ended? But do you still feel a bit lonely, like you’re missing the camaraderie and brotherhood of deep friendship? That’s common among most men. It’s true for leaders, who often feel deep loneliness and isolation, even if they mistakenly think they have hundreds of friends. What if you positively knew that something you really like was really really good for you? Would you get excited and intentional about choosing it? Deep friendship was the way of Jesus. He was intentional, consistent and authentic. He had three closest friends and changed the world through twelve of his friends. What can we learn from the way Jesus invested in his friendships? Friendship Jesus-style contrasts starkly with the watered-down friendship practiced by society. Let’s look at how we can form and enjoy deep friendship, Level 5 Friendship. Can you find the right guys? Can you get over the hurdles of trust, time and fear of looking bad? There’s clear hope and help as you start huddling consistently. Let’s look at the power of processing our lives in a huddle of friends and in huddling with Father God as we meet Him in His word.
We’ve all over-promised and under-delivered. We’ve all felt inspired and convicted. We wanted to change. We were ready to aim high. But then, we’ve all been smacked in the face by reality and fallen back to wistfully thinking, “Ya, God. But, how?” You may be better at blaming than forgiving. Your pride may prevent you from apologizing or asking for help. You may be playing a constant comparison game, dogged by insecurity wondering “what are they thinking about me?” Does your fear of looking like a failure cause you to fail to be honest? You wonder, “Will I ever be able to kill my fear, pretending and lying?” God doesn’t frown at you. He says, “Yes, I can set you free to be the real you I intended.” Are you ready to be God-confident, instead of flailing to be self-confident? Let’s look at how Jesus lived as a son. He gives us the way and the how of being a real and good man - authentic and beneficial to others. He received as a son and transformed as a man. He’ll give us the way to live a life of being transformed and transforming relationships and situations for good.
Most of us have some father deficit or wound. None of us were perfectly fathered. Have you had doubts and false quests arise in your life? Do you get wound up trying to perform, to do well and control your life? Is there a better way? Envision having secure confidence knowing who you are and the very essence of what kind of man you want to be. Our Father God gave us both of these in His Son Jesus. Once you clear up your view of God, you can clarify your view of yourself and enjoy the healing freedom of being re-Fathered by God. Let’s look at the essence of a man and his traits in Jesus, the ultimate man. Good news! Jesus shows us the way to do what we cannot do. Let’s discover God’s intended minute-to-minute way to live - sonship. Jesus lived it and made it available to us - continually depending, connecting and receiving from the Father as well-loved sons.
You can’t achieve your manhood. Sorry, but that’s great news. Especially if you experience confusion and frustration like most guys. We’re told we have to earn our manhood. Society has dozens of misguided suggestions, from sexual conquest to a big bank account to six-pack abs. Even in churches, men seek self-assurance through spiritual performance. But all these efforts fail because we’re trying to win the approval of our peers, wives, fathers, kids or even God Himself. It frustrates and wears us out – leaving us isolated, burnt out, and confused. Would you like to feel secure as a man without competing or pretending? Jesus has a better way. It’s receiving, not achieving. Abba Father invites us to receive our way to live just as we receive His solution in Jesus Christ. Let’s explore the journey of manhood in the way of Jesus - receiving your identity as God’s son and following Jesus’ perfectly dependent way of being a man. Let’s experience how receiving transforms everything in your life – from finding your purpose to rediscovering deep friendship – and defines what it means to be a real, good man.
Following Jesus means taking risks in your relationship with God as well as in your relationships with people. When speaking to his men he also told them they would be taking risks in their relationship to His church. Specifically, that they would be connected to an evil defeating machine that advanced his agenda on earth! As both head and builder of His church, we are called to follow his example of building up and serving the Body of Christ. This dimension of our journey with Jesus will also involve a tension, a stretching of our faith, and a life giving connection to a community of believers.
