The United States Presidential Nominating System

The United States Constitution lays out a set procedure for the election of a president and how a winner is determined from various candidates.  However, it says absolutely nothing about how those candidates are determined in the first place.  Since the first presidential election, the process by which parties have chosen their candidates has changed multiple times and quite dramatically. Numbers Stations

If you ever stay up at night scanning through frequencies on shortwave radio, there is a good chance you might come across something very odd and kind of creepy.  You will find a station that is nothing but a disembodied voice reading off a seemingly random string of numbers. There is often an identifying sound or song which is played on a regular basis before another recital of numbers.  These stations have no call signs or other identifying information, and no one has ever publicly claimed responsibility for them.  Learn more about numbers stations, what they are, and how they work on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto

In the Pacific Theater in World War II, the leader of the combined Japanese fleet was Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.  Yamamoto was villanized as the arch-enemy of the American forces in the Pacific, and to be fair, he was their enemy.  But there is actually much more to the story. Yamamoto was the loudest voice against war with the United States and was one of the only officials in the Japanese leadership who spent time in the United States and understood it.  Learn more about Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, his rise and tragic end on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. The Battle of Tours

In the year 732, one of the most important battles in world history took place between the cities of Tours and Portier in France.  On one side was an unstoppable juggernaut that had amassed one of the largest empires in world history in less than a century.  On the other side was a vastly outnumbered force that lacked the primary weapon of the era, heavy cavalry.  The outcome of that battle can still be seen in the world today.  Learn more about the Batte of Tours and the battle that shaped Europe on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. Prohibition

On January 16, 1919, the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed. It banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol.  The path to the 18th Amendment was something that was almost a century in the making, and once it was passed, it was widely ignored both illegally and through numerous legal loopholes.  Finally, after being in place for almost 14 years, it was repealed with overwhelming popular support using a constitutional method that has never been used before or since. Learn more about prohibition, how it came about, and how it ended on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. What is the Deal With SpaceX’s Starship? (Redux)

In 1967, the very first Saturn V rocket was launched. It was the largest rocket ever built.  55 years later, it is still the largest rocket ever launched.
