The cloud cover on Monday will impact the strength of any storms. More clouds mean cooler temperatures and lower instability, leading to a scattered, weaker severe storm threat. More sun means more warmth and greater instability, adding to the potential for more severe thunderstorms. While the main storm threat moves out late Monday night, showers and some rumbles of thunder will linger into Tuesday. Breezy and cooler with highs in the upper 50s. Windy and chilly Wednesday. It looks sunny for the Cardinals home opener, but breezy and cool. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The State of Missouri took a big step toward taking control of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. The House of Representatives approved a “state control” bill in a landslide 109-36 vote. The debate was passionate and heated on the house floor prior to the vote on Thursday. “Don’t let anybody fool you,” said South County Republican State Rep. Brad Christ. “This is about supporting public safety and solving a public safety crisis in the St. Louis region that’s affecting the entire state. His bill, HB 1481, calls for a new state police board made up of the St. Louis Mayor and four members appointed by the Missouri Governor to operate the city’s police department, staffed with at least 1,313 officers. The department has fewer than 900 officers now, according to the St. Louis Police Officers Association. From the Civil War until 2013, a state-appointed board ran the department from the days of the Civil War until 2013. It was initially established to keep Union supporters in St. Louis from controlling the police department’s weapons arsenal. A severe hailstorm, with hailstones reaching the size of baseballs, wreaked havoc across parts of St. Charles County, causing significant damage to vehicles and homes. The storm struck the O’Fallon area on Thursday afternoon. At Clement Ford on West Terra Lane, just off I-70, the aftermath was particularly visible. The dealership suffered damage to approximately 450 vehicles, including both new and used cars. The hail shattered windshields and dented hoods, showcasing the storm’s intensity. Viewer-submitted videos captured the ferocity of the hail as it battered the region. The storm did not spare the county’s Emergency Operations Center, where the county and employees’ personal vehicles were also damaged. The director reported widespread damage to vehicles and homes throughout the county. St. Dominic High School in O’Fallon was among the hardest hit. Photos from the scene showed the ground covered in hail, with the senior class parking lot sustaining considerable damage. School officials had to cover broken skylights with tarps as the storm continued to rage. Despite the extensive property damage, there have been no reports of injuries. The community is now assessing the full extent of the damage as it begins the process of recovery and repair.
