Some years ago, Bill Parcells told me that regarding the types of players available to us in the NFL, “We are captives to what the colleges send us.” I have immense respect for Bill’s team-building and player-evaluation skills. Look through the list of Big Ten East Division champions and it’s easy to see why Penn State projected as the third-place team entering college football’s 2023 season. Have the season’s first few weeks revealed how No. 6 Ohio State at No. 9 Notre Dame will play out on Saturday night? Lets’ take an initial look as the college football world heads to South Bend. The first two weeks of college football have undoubtedly lived up to the hype, treating fans to a plethora of exhilarating games and jaw-dropping upsets. As we approach week 3, you might look at the weekend slate and consider it a down week. However, in the realm of college football’s unpredictability, there’s no such thing as a dull week. Here’s a list of matchups that should grab your attention this weekend. Heading into Week 3 of college football, the weekend slate doesn’t appear to be as appetizing as most this fall. There are no matchups pitting nationally-ranked teams and most of the perceived title contenders play teams they should beat by several touchdowns. But the unexpected is what make college football great and an upset or two on Saturday would certainly changed well-established narratives in the early going. Tennessee-Florida marks the SEC opener for both teams while Colorado’s home bout against Colorado State is what separates the Buffs from a 3-0 and enhanced national spotlight. Top-ranked Georgia is hoping not to get tripped up by South Carolina in Athens and Penn State’s be careful game at Illinois is worth keeping an eye on. I always hated losing the regular season opener because it puts tremendous pressure on winning in Week 2 to avoid starting the season 0-2. The NFL season is a roller coaster, and it’s never good to start 0-1 and see divisional foes get an early leg up in the standings, even if the logical view is there are 16 games left to catch up. Upsets usually fill Week 1, and there were plenty last week. Most notable were six playoff teams from last season who lost as favorites, four at home — the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers — and the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills, who lost on the road. The New York Giants were the seventh. They were a three-point underdog but were embarrassed at home, 40-0, by the Dallas Cowboys. Here’s my ranking of which teams should be worried most after their Week 1 defeat. I’ll eliminate the Chargers and Bills from this discussion since they had close losses. The Chargers lost by just two points, and the Bills almost won despite Josh Allen‘s four turnovers.
