In Malawi, a high court is set to rule Tuesday on whether the Defense Force can withhold "sensitive national security" documents" from Vice President Saulus Chilima's defense team. Chilima's lawyer argues to do so would undermine his client's legal right to a fair trial. Former Attorney General Kalekale Kaphale tells VOA's Peter Clottey he wants written communications between President Lazarus Chakwera and the head of Malawi's Defense Force.

In Togo, civil society and religious groups are calling on President Faure Gnassingbe not to sign a new parliamentary measure into law. The controversial legislation amends the constitution to allow parliament to choose the next president. For more, VOA's Peter Clottey talks to human rights lawyer and former minister Jean Yaovi Degli.

Niger’s military recently said the presence of American troops in the West African country is illegal. US officials are meeting behind closed doors with Niger’s military rulers to try to work out a deal to keep some US troops there. Niger had been a key US ally in the region before the July coup. Sahel expert Michael Shurkin tells VOA's Carol Van Dam it’s easier for the junta to blame the US for economic woes and attacks by insurrectionists than to deal with those issues head-on.

A new UN report says the world wasted 19% of the food produced in 2022. The nations reporting for the index nearly doubled from 2021. Researchers found each person wastes about 174 pounds of food a year. Co-author Clementine O’Connor says it's a travesty when over 780 million people face chronic hunger, including many in Africa. She tells VOA's Carol Van Dam it’s complicated, but the problem can be solved through collaboration.

On Nightline Africa, the Pope calls for an immediate cease-fire and the release of all hostages in Gaza, the co-author of a new UN report says 19% of all food produced is wasted, and a high court weighs whether Malawi's Defense Force can block a high-ranking official's lawyers from seeing security documents for his court case. All this and more on Nightline Africa.

Early this week Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed a new partnership with Africa on Monday, unveiling a long-awaited plan aimed at boosting economic ties, creating an energy hub for Europe and curbing immigration. Reuters reports during the one-day summit attended by more than two dozen African leaders and European Union officials, Meloni outlined a series of initiatives, pledging an initial $5.95 billion, including state guarantees. Political analyst David Monda, a Professor of Political Science at City University of New York tells VOA’s Douglas Mpuga more about the significance of this summit.
