"We need to return to common sense" - Nationals Leader David Littleproud

It's been an interesting week in politics - The entire Australian mainland is now governed by the Labor Party and South Australia has become the first jurisdiction in Australia to legislate an indigenous voice to parliament.  South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas declared it the most powerful show of respect towards Australia’s First Nations people. His government’s legislation passed the House of Assembly in a special sitting on Sunday and was immediately proclaimed by governor Frances Adamson in a rare public ceremony in front of a cheering crowd who gathered to watch the proceedings outside parliament house in Adelaide.  So far, The Nationals are the only major party to formally oppose the Voice, Luke chats with their leader David Littleproud to get his take on the situation in South Australia and the result in NSW.      See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are One Nation the dark horse of the NSW election?

There are suggestions One Nation could end up playing a decisive role in the upcoming NSW election.  They’re fielding a record 17 candidates in the lower house, and their strong ‘anti woke’ agenda and sensible climate policies are resonating with disenfranchised Liberal voters. Luke chats with NSW One Nation leader, Mark Latham, to discuss the issues the party is campaigning on, gauge his reaction to the violent scenes outside a church where he was speaking, and find out where One Nation’s critical preferences may flow.  See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has walked away from her plan to implement rent caps.  Shadow Treasurer, David Janetzki, says the move has exposed the chaos running through her government, which he believes is only exacerbating the housing crisis.  He tells Luke Grant that the state deserves more than just short sighted political fixes and random "thought bubbles", and that more houses need to be built.    See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What's behind the rental crisis?

The rental crisis has seen vacancy rates at historic lows all around the country.  Luke chats with executive research director at CoreLogic, Tim Lawless to get a better understanding of what we are doing wrong.  He says, “over the short to medium term the rental supply outlook is looking pretty glum". People seeking asylum in Australia in record numbers

Former Deputy Secretary of the Department of Immigration & author of 'Population Shock', Abul Rizvi, tells Luke that for the first time in our history, Asylum cases in Australia now exceed 100,000 people. He believes that despite the intense attention the media has paid to boat arrivals for the last decade, very few of these 100,000 asylum cases actually arrived by sea.  Rather, the bulk arrived during an intense period of labour trafficking of Malaysian and Chinese nationals from 2014-15 until the start of the pandemic by air. Violence against school principles happening at astonishing rates

Violent parents, suicidal students and teacher shortages are pushing stressed school principals to quit at record rates, a survey of nearly 2500 Australian school leaders reveals.   At least 44 percent of principals were victims of physical violence last year – the highest level since the Australian Catholic University began its annual Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey in 2011.    School leaders are now 11 times more at risk of experiencing physical violence at work, than the general population.    Luke chats with Australian Secondary Principals Association president Andrew Pierpoint to find out just how bad the situation is on the ground.  See omnystudio.com/listener https://omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
