Eileen J. Donovan: A Lady Newspaperman's Dilemma. This is episode 515 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Today I am talking with Eileen J. Donovan. Although born in New York City, where she spent most of her life, she has lived in six states and has visited most of the others. She earned her MA in English at Northern Arizona University. In one way or another, she has been writing her entire life, whether it was imaginative stories for her friends, or advertising copy for industrial clients. She never felt her stories were “good enough” to be published. At the persistent urging of her late husband, she finally agreed to seriously edit and revise one of them and take the plunge. Although accepted for publication, the book never made it all the way to print. However, she had the courage to pursue her dream of becoming a published author. Years later, her persistence paid off. Her traditionally published debut historical novel, Promises, won the 2019 Marie M Irvine Award for Literary Excellence. Her historical fiction, A Lady Newspaperman's Dilemma presently with Woodhall Press and released in September 2022, won the 2021 When Words Count nationwide competition. She's also had short stories published in various anthologies. Her non-fiction essay appeared in the 2021 Chicken Soup for the Soul Blessing of Christmas. She lives in Manhattan, New York and is a member of Authors Guild, SCBWI, Women’s National Book Association, and The Historical Novel Society. Today we will be focused on writing and her recently released book - A Lady Newspaperman’s Dilemma … Awesome read! Awesome talk! But wait... The National College Attainment Network (NCAN) recently named Cook one of 15 College and Career Readiness Fellows across the United States and the sole Fellow from Florida. Richard Owens, The Managing Director of Programs at Tarrant To & Through Partnership (T3 Partnership), began his career in the classroom teaching fifth-grade math and science, and later joined Teach for America in a variety of roles. As a senior managing director for Teach for America he built a community of more than 600 equity-driven corps members and alumni. With a focus on the power of diversity, Richard increased team composition from 25 to 45 percent people of color with varied backgrounds and experiences. He also designed and led staff learning experiences focused on the integration of personal values, cultivated relationships with key stakeholders and fostered an organizational culture that contributed to a 20 percent increase in teacher satisfaction. Most recently, Richard served as a District Support Consultant at the Holdsworth Center. In this role, he supported two North Texas districts is assessing and revamping their district wide talent development systems and practices. Richard earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Georgia. He is a graduate of the Cobb County School District in Marietta, Georgia. Our Focus is… How can we make the college prep process equitable? With the average school counselor ratio in public high schools 400 students to 1 counselor, it is difficult for school counselors to devote attention to each student and their needs. Therefore, many families spend thousands of dollars hiring outside college prep counselors to assist their children. What about the families that can’t afford outside college prep? How can we create equity in the college application process? So much to learn! Cool conversation! But wait... The new intro and outro music was written and performed by Brian K. Buffington. Gisela Bengfort-Piatti frequently tells stories to her kids and grandkids about animals, empathy, making decisions, and unlimited possibilities. Camryn, one of her grandkids, inspired her to write down some of these family stories and true events from her past to the present. Dan E. Hendrickson Discusses His Novel - The Living Legend: A Last Enemy Prequel, Writing Techniques, and Influences on His Writing. This is episode 507 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Dan Hendrickson was born in Sheridan Wyoming in 1962 near the rustic Big Horn mountain range to Carl and Helen Hendrickson. He went to school in the Sheridan School District graduating from Sheridan High School in 1981. He was an avid participant in boxing, martial arts, wrestling, and track. His father owned a small eight lane bowling alley that he ran until Dan was 12 years old. Carl also had a master’s degree in English and loved to write poetry and plays. Dan picked up on his father’s love for the written word and enrolled in Casper Community College in 1982 majoring in journalism. Although he found that he had an aptitude for investigative reporting, he decided that his interests were in other areas. He went on to do much volunteer Christian ministry work throughout the United States most of his adult life and continues to pursue those endeavors to this day. During that time, he gained another degree in Practical Theology. Throughout his many ministry assignments, he also worked several secular jobs. Some of his work experience includes law enforcement, security, emergency medical technician, and firefighting. He also helped run a Martial Arts School where he was a senior instructor. Most notable of his work experience is his auto detailing endeavors. He and his wife, Cheryl, have owned three different auto detailing businesses throughout the country, the last of which they still run to this day. Today, we are focused on his latest novel - a prequel - The Living Legend: A Last Enemy Prequel A little bit about The Living Legend: A Last Enemy Prequel… Dan E. Hendrickson's new novel The Living Legend, shows a brilliance at creating tension and conflicts in the story. For those who enjoy action and adventure in a military setting, they will adore this book. Deception, politics, corruption, bravery, love, integrity, determination, and lots of action are the key elements on The Living Legend, the latest in The Last Enemy series from Dan E. Hendrickson. This is his follow-up book to penning Brandy: Ballad of a Pirate Princess, which was named last year by Online Book Club as its Historical Fiction Book of the Year. Set in the 1970s, on one side of the world, Tommy, a man seeking vengeance for his father’s murder; on the other side, Makena, a woman seeking to stop the slavery of her people. We’ll find out how their worlds collide in The Living Legend. “My books tend to have a military/law enforcement flavor because they deal with issues like modern day human trafficking, organized crime, high-sea drug smuggling, historical piracy, and slave trading,” says Hendrickson. “This one takes place when the Navy SEAL program was launched and the mission is to go after a Russian assassin.” This is an awesome read! Monte Schulz discusses his novel Metropolis, writing techniques, reading other writers, and influences on his writing. This is episode 505 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Monte Schulz received his M.A. in American Studies from University of California, Santa Barbara. He published his first novel, Down by the River, in 1990, and spent the next twelve years writing a novel about the Jazz Age. Monte is endlessly curious and well versed in world history and theology. He is fascinated by the style and use of innovative language, and can be caught engaging in provocative, philosophical conversations about big, far-reaching, imaginative, ideas and worldly perspectives. His father is the late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. He lives in Santa Barbara, CA. A little about Metropolis Regency College senior Julian Brehm’s uneventful student life is derailed when he falls for Nina Rinaldi, a beautiful young revolutionary engaged in political activism against the authoritarian regime that rules the country and wages a deceitful, distracting war. Julian’s love for — and moral alliance to — Nina eventually leads him into a vast undercity beneath the metropolis. Then, east by train and into the war zone itself, where mortal danger in that expanding cemetery of millions threatens Julian’s life; what he witnesses will alter how he perceives the Republic and ultimately his fate within it. Our focus today is on Monte, his writing, and his novel Metropolis… So much to learn... But wait... By the way, the new intro and outro music was written and performed by Brian K. Buffington. Danielle Nuhfer - The Path of the Mindful Teacher: How to Choose Calm Over Chaos and Serenity Over Stress, One Step at a Time. This is episode 499 of Teaching Learning Leading K12. Danielle Nuhfer is a teacher wellness coach (and a fellow teacher!) and she helps time-crunched teachers find time for self-care. She works with teachers who love what they do (most of the time) but don’t love how they feel (some of the time): teachers who want to find balance in all areas of their lives without leaving a profession that they love. Her specialty is supporting teachers in building their resilience by saying “NO” to what isn’t working and saying “YES” to the real and achievable possibility of balance both inside and outside of the classroom. This is done without focusing on what’s wrong and instead focusing on what is, building on your unique lived experience, school situation, and personal needs. She teaches you how to fill your own self-care and teacher wellness buckets through a variety of different tools and techniques through teacher wellness coaching while also holding space for the real conversations and considerations that arise when we begin integrating these tools into our lives. Teacher wellness coaching is about learning how to prioritize and nourish yourself first and {un}learning the messaging that says self-care is selfish. Danielle notes, “We are all at different stages of this teaching well journey, but together I know we can teach well together because #weareteachingwell.” Today our focus is on Danielle's book The Path of the Mindful Teacher: How to Choose Calm Over Chaos and Serenity Over Stress, One Step at a Time. Stephen Furlich shares his book Sex Talk: How Biological Sex Influences Gender Communication Differences Throughout Life's Stages. This is Episode 498 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Dr. Stephen Furlich is the author of a breakthrough book, Sex Talk: How Biological Sex Influences Gender Communication Differences Throughout Life’s Stages. He has taught and researched communication at the university level for over 20 years. He has taught a variety of communication courses with the main focus of better understanding oneself and others. Often, his research projects and the courses that he taught, complemented each other and led into innovative directions. Dr. Furlich has been an associate professor at Texas A & M University since 2018 and served as an assistant professor there for five years prior to that. He has presented at many conferences, including: DFW Metroplex Linguistics Conference, Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education Conference, E-Learning Conference, National Communication Association Conference, Southern States Communication Association Conference, International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines, and International Conference of the American Pragmatics Association. His communication paradigm is from a receiver’s perspective. This places the emphasis on the listener to better understand from the speaker’s perspectives and as a speaker emphasizing understanding from the listener’s perspectives. Both of these become more challenging as differences increase between the speaker and listener. Dr. Furlich has become fascinated with technological advancements in science that have enabled a better understanding of communication. Without these scientific advances, understanding communication is quite limited. This line of research has inspired him to write this book to bring together many different scientific studies to better understand the role of biology with gender communication differences. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education, a Master of Arts in Communication Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Texas Tech University. He resides in Commerce, Texas. Kieran O'Mahony - The Brain-Based Classroom: Accessing Every Child's Potential Through Educational Neuroscience. This is episode 497 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. After a long career in education, Dr. Kieran O’Mahony consistently found himself questioning the status quo. While in the faculty room we spoke in forward-looking platitudes and used phrases like “equality of educational opportunity, but he realized that neither “equality” nor “opportunity” were associated with the education they were doling out. He couldn’t help but wonder why our school systems were driving our children into bleak futures? So, he decided to spend his career seeking the solution to one of the biggest problems we face today: how can we give every student an equal opportunity to love learning? That question led Kieran to develop the cognitive learning model taught in The Brain-Based Classroom and the Brain-Based Solutions training programs. Now, you can develop the same understanding of the brain, and use the same techniques we used, to get incredible results for your child, classroom, or school system. Dr. Kieran O’Mahony is the Founding Principal of the Institute for Connecting Neuroscience with Teaching and Learning, USA, and author of the best-selling text The Brain-Based Classroom: Accessing Every Child’s Potential through Educational Neuroscience (Routledge, 2021). Model schools anchored to my brain-based pedagogic framework are thriving in India, across Africa, and here in America. She also did archaeological artwork for excavations from Lebanon. With seven published novels, Holmes is the creator of The Lord Hani Mysteries. The inspiration for her Bronze Age novels came with an assignment she gave to her students one day: Here are the only documents we have telling us about royal divorce in Ugarit in the 13th century. How much can we say about what happened? She notes: “It quickly became apparent that almost anything we might come up with was as much fiction as historiography!” She also penned The Empire At Twilight series, historical fiction set in the 13th century C.B. during the Hittite Empire. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, she attended The University of Texas in the honors program but dropped out midway to enter into the antiques business. Two years later, she entered the Discalced Carmelite convent in Texas. She left the convent 20 years later and returned to school to get her B.A. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. Holmes resides with her husband, three cats, and a dog. They split their time between Tampa, Florida and northern France, where she gardens, weaves, and plays the violin. They have an adult son. Today we are focused on her latest book Pilot Who Knows the Waters. Thanks for listening. But wait... Could you do me a favor? Nicole Asherah - A Life Cycle: A Guide to Healing and Rediscovering Yourself. This is episode 494 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Nicole Asherah is an artist whose main mediums are poetry, film photography, and oil painting but she has a habit of dabbling in whatever sparks her creative juices. Switching between mediums of expression, Nicole tries to connect readers to intimate moments, feelings, and relationships experienced throughout life. She wants to break your heart with the raw emotion that her pieces evoke. She hopes you find joy in that heartbreak as she always does! Nicole has unique background of being raised by a psychologist, backpacking around more than 15 countries by herself, attending Roehampton University’s Creative Writing Poetry MFA, volunteering with SURJ and other grassroots organizations that have all synthesized to give her broad understanding of peoples individual struggles and how to capture them in art. Nicole loves to hear feedback and reactions so please feel free to comment or contact her. Today we will focus on her book - A Life Cycle: A Guide to Healing and Rediscovering Yourself. A Life Cycle, Nicole Asherah’s debut book, follows the introspective process of transformation after emotional hardship through poetic language. Asherah serves as a guide through the sections of her book while also allowing the readers to see the words as their own. A Life Cycle is broken into sections after a traumatic event that represents the final tipping point. What follows is The Shattering: a deep dive into the suffering of fully losing one’s sense of self and safety, The Healing: a journey through processing layers of trauma to reach the root hurts of childhood, Light Shines Through: an exploration of reigniting hope and learning to find joy, and The Loving: a discovery of what love is and how the act of loving has much more to do with one’s self than the person receiving the love. This book transcends the genre of poetry because of its ability to universally help people process and name feelings that often elude words. This book is for anyone developing, hurting, healing, or becoming new versions of themselves. She knows this because that is exactly what she was doing when she wrote it: healing childhood trauma, processing a sexual assault, and learning how to experience joy. Great conversation! Irmgarde Brown talks about her novel: Sister Jane. This is episode 492 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Irmgarde Brown knows a good book when she sees one. For 28 years she had stacked shelves as a librarian. She also recognizes a good theatrical story, having written, produced, and acted in a one-woman play that toured for two years. Now she has broken into book publishing with a character-driven, plot-twisting novel that examines how society reacts to people who make major life changes and discover their true talents later in life. It also explores whether we really believe in miracles or if social media, the government, community, and the news media would distort whatever the truth really is. A little bit about her book Sister Jane… All her life, Jane believes she is small-town ordinary. . . until she isn't. Some people brand her a witch, while others believe she has a demon. Her family thinks she's ready for the nursing home, and a down-and-out news reporter assumes she's a fake. But nobody, including Jane, can figure out how she does it: heal the sick. All the sick. All the time. Is it a gift of God? The Church is divided. Then, everything erupts when the foreigners arrive along with members of the government and the scientists. Will Jane become a pawn or save herself? Great read! great talk! Thanks for listening. But wait... Could you do me a favor?
