Brian Yauger of Lemonhaze is known for providing first-class events for members of the cannabis industry for low or no cost. Each event focuses on a different segment in the industry with budtender parties, buyer meetings, and mixers, or events for executives and managers in order to bring people together to network and grow the industry. When the global pandemic forced them into an exclusively virtual event model, they began looking at what would be their first live events that they would be able to bring back as COVID begins to wind down. As vaccines began to be approved, they knew that golf tournaments would be the perfect events to come back with. Lemonhaze's executive golf tournaments offer a great day of fun and networking to all owners, executives, and managers of licensed dispensaries and brands in both adult-use and medical states. Here is how they guarantee you the perfect audience at our executive golf tournaments: *Foursomes will be composed of cannabis industry executives from the local area and nationwide. Lemonhaze has searched high and low to bring together the biggest list of who's-who in the cannabis industry. *After the tournament rub-elbows and have drinks with all of the players, sponsors, and other cannabis executives who were unable to make it on the green. *No matter the segment of the industry you focus on, we'll have decision-makers and valuable contacts there for you to meet. See you on the green! #Delta8 found its place in smoke or vape shops and convenience stores with many positioning it as a mildly psychoactive product for people without access to legal cannabis. As of June 2021, twelve states have completely banned delta-8 THC, including Washington state who's regulators said marijuana processors cannot convert hemp-derived CBD into delta-9 THC in the legal cannabis market, a move that is likely to be welcomed by MJ cultivators who feared the practice involving federally legal hemp would undermine their own businesses. The process combines CBD with a solvent, acid, and heat to cause the reaction that turns CBD into THC. And because the FDA has not yet provided any regulations, there is a lack of standardization in lab testing across the board. With state limits on hemp-derived delta-8 THC beginning to impact sales for product manufacturers and retailers, businesses are considering how they will make up the gap. Until federal agencies come to a final ruling and standardize regulations, laws will continue to change on a state and local level. #Cannabis #IPO The initial wave of cannabis SPACs have largely completed their qualifying transactions producing over $5B of M&A transaction value from their $1.8 billion of IPO proceeds. Viridian expects the second wave to be equally significant with approximately $5.9B of deals announced or projected. 9 SPAC mergers have been completed totaling $5.4B in merger value from $1.8B in IPO proceeds, 2 SPAC mergers are pending totaling $2.1B in merger value from only $270 M in IPO proceeds, and 7 SPACs are searching for a target after raising $1.2B from IPOs. Completing cannabis SPAC deals has been difficult, particularly for larger US listed SPACS who are limited to non-plant touching deals. This has led 5 SPACs that started out searching for cannabis targets, to complete a merger in a different industry. On top of that, cannabis SPACs have generally paid above market multiples for their acquisitions. A handful of California cannabis manufacturers and brands have begun selling their products directly to customers through their websites, effectively bypassing traditional brick-and-mortar retail shops and delivery companies that have long been the gatekeepers to marijuana consumers. Some retailers are unhappy about the direct-to-consumer development, however, and say they feel cheated. But insiders say they expect the practice will spread quickly to other states that also allow home delivery. The only question is when. Cannabis grown in California is some of the best in the world. Mexicans are demanding California grown cannabis that drug dealers in Mexico have been forced to source from the States, according to WaPo. They're labeling the cannabis "IMPORTADO" and charging a hefty markup. Seattle Bubbleworks got its start in 2016, when our founder saw a niche in the market. Joby had been working with a local cannabis processor and helping them market and distribute their flower and vape cartridges to market. He realized that his passion of producing quality products that addressed the standards of the medicinal marijuana community were at odds with the previous management. Although that processor was finding success, they were less concerned about the quality and more about the quantity produced. Joby found that unfair to the consumer, and began looking into a solvent-free method of creating cannabis concentrates. By revisiting the ancient art of hash-making through ice water separation, Joby chose to venture out on his own and gathered together a skilled crew of industry colleagues, each as passionate and skilled as the last, to set up his own “bubbleworks”. By working with ethical producers, and inspecting each batch, Seattle Bubbleworks is proud of the products they provide and will be expanding into other ventures as well. The cannabis edibles market is expected to surpass $10 billion in annual sales by 2025. It is one of the fastest growing product types, consistently capturing the third largest share- of-shelf of all cannabis product types. The maturing edibles category is starting to see some standardization. Large pack sizes increased in June while smaller sizes— like 5mg, 90mg, and 30mg—lost share of shelf. The demographics is different than other potential purchasers with US edibles purchaser being younger, higher educated, and slightly higher income. They are also more likely to have children and be a woman. The recent rise in inflation has been causing concern among economists and consumers alike. Some of us might be able to see the impacts of inflation at the grocery store, where our dollar buys us less over time, but what about in the cannabis space? If inflation was heavily impacting the cannabis industry, we would expect that the prices of individual products would increase over time. We do not see that happening. Short term, costs to build new facilities and equipment may rise as producers pass on higher commodity input costs, and higher energy costs could drive up indoor cultivation costs. But if we enter a long-term inflationary cycle, cannabis is well positioned because the continued federal illegality of cannabis has led to excessive costs that provide cost-cutting opportunities regardless of inflation While inflation has not been negatively impacting consumers in the cannabis industry, things may change. And since the cannabis industry has the tendency to move quickly, we will continue to monitor the space and keep track of pricing and inflation. At the dawn of legalization in Washington State in 2012, Nick and Shawn didn’t know how life was about to turn upside down. Colleagues at a gaming company, they came into the office and learned the business had been dissolved, suits arrived out of the elevator banks straight out of the matrix, and ushered everyone to the exits, file boxes in hand (except for Shawn who cleverly slipped his computer out the fire escape). Pondering their next move, Nick, born in Eastern Washington, and 5th-generation Lebanese tells Shawn: “Look, the business right now is hashish and flower joints.” Serendipitously, state cannabis licenses are still open for 30 days. Had their employer been sold one month later, or a few months earlier, the opportunity to start Sitka may not have been. As it worked out, the universe nudged a pair of friends to heed the call and take a leap into the unknown and embark on a new adventure. Increased cannabis use over the pandemic further normalized the plant, with recent reports showing 91% of Americans are in favor of at least medical cannabis. New recreational cannabis consumers are using marijuana more frequently than previously surveyed new users. 50% of new recreational cannabis users in Q4 2020 used cannabis 5+ days per week. The portion of female cannabis users steadily rose through 2020, reaching 51% in Q1 2021. Women cannabis consumers skew younger and are heavier cannabis users than men. The next step on the road to federal cannabis legalization in the US will likely be the SAFE Banking Act. The US cannabis market has been optimistic since the 2020 election. Currently, acquisitions are heating up in the US cannabis space. Companies across the supply chain in various states are purchasing other brands. China is already recognised as the world’s largest hemp producer (growing more than two-thirds of the planet’s output), though it exports nearly all of that while strictly maintaining prohibition of high-THC cannabis. Following years as the USA’s main source of hemp imports, China is now being required under a new trade deal to buy a lot more of the nonintoxicating cannabis crop from the U.S. China has domestically clamped down on CBD. In March, the country first proposed the notion of a ban, before its National Medical Products Administration banned cannabis compounds in cosmetics, including CBD oil and leaf. Products have been pulled from shelves in the clampdown, and the industry is starting to move elsewhere. The overall policy seems to tolerate cannabis for export, but in no measure for domestic consumers. For the time being, China’s restrictive measures stand in stark contrast to those in Europe (where a mature CBD market has developed), and where obstacles keep falling as regulations are simplified. While China seeks to limit the use of cannabis products in its home market, it may continue to ramp up production for foreign trade as with Europe. For so long as it chooses to, it will be missing a vast economic opportunity at home amid a frustrated market hungry for the benefits of CBD and other cannabis products. Canada’s legal cannabis industry saw only limited, short-term negative effect from the pandemic in 2020, including an increase in physical retail share of total sales— nearly 90%. Valuations of Canadian-focused operators are still trading at a premium on sales compared to U.S. operators, despite a smaller market and lower margins. BDSA forecasts total legal cannabis spending in Canada to reach nearly $6.4 billion in 2026, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16%. Arizonans legalized adult-use cannabis as part of the five-state green wave that occurred in the November 2020 election. Since then, the state has stood out from the pack by quickly implementing and launching its adult-use market in February 2021. Arizona became the 10th state with adult-use cannabis retail. The state is already home to one of the most developed medical cannabis markets in the country, as BDSA’s retail sales tracking shows that Arizona brought in over $1 billion in medical sales for 2020. While Arizona’s market will likely deal with issues that are common in new adult-use markets, such as undersupply and limited retail coverage, BDSA expects Arizona to see strong adult-use sales in 2021. Sales took off in short order, amassing $2.9 million over the first 10 days. In March, sales reached $120 million. However, state Department of Revenue officials said the figure was not entirely reliable due to jumbled tax collections and incorrect reporting from some stores. Still, prospects appear high for one of the nation's newest adult-use markets. With what seems to be a robust regulatory system in place, investors and entrepreneurs may find success if they can navigate the limited licensed, vertically integrated market- making the market ideal for investors and current operators. While cannabis cultivation required relatively trivial amounts of land and water, a tremendous amount of value is being produced for the burgeoning commodity. In the United States, a wholesale pound of quality smokable cannabis flower can fetch between $1,500 and $3,000 or more, while a pound of coffee or tobacco cost $1.78 and $2.05 per pound, respectively. An in-depth look at water usage in the regulated cannabis cultivation market reveals how it compares to the illicit market and traditional agricultural sectors. On a per-pound basis, cannabis might be better compared to more valuable, scarce cash crops. Mid-range cannabis in the United States, costing approximately $1,500/lb., is comparable to the price a pound of saffron fetched in Delhi, India, last year ($1,496), or the same amount of Italian white truffles ($1,581). Consequently, cannabis is not only one of the world’s most valuable cash crops, but the industry’s market value has potential to increase dramatically, with only incremental increases in production. Across the globe, nations which have legalized cannabis for either medical or adult use have found the plant to be an enticing source of additional revenue. At the same time, agricultural research and innovation should normalize cultivation practices and lead to greater resource efficiency. Mexico's Supreme Court voted that laws prohibiting the use of recreational marijuana were unconstitutional. The court ruling ordered the Mexican government to issue permits for personal marijuana use and the cultivation of small amounts of cannabis plants for any citizen 18 or older who applies. Multinational cannabis operator, Clever Leaves Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:CLVR) is poised to enter the Mexican market through a supply deal with CBD Life Holdings. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recently said federal marijuana laws may be outdated when he stated “a prohibition on interstate use or cultivation of marijuana may no longer be necessary or proper to support the federal government’s piecemeal approach. Federal policies of the past 16 years have greatly undermined its reasoning,” Thomas added. “The federal government’s current approach is a half-in, half-out regime that simultaneously tolerates and forbids local use of marijuana. Given all these developments, one can certainly understand why an ordinary person might think that the Federal Government has retreated from its once-absolute ban on marijuana,” he wrote. July 4th celebrations involve pairings of friends, food and festivities. Independence Day and cannabis go hand-in-hand with the top occasions for cannabis consumption being “daytime fun” and well as “celebrating special events.” 4th of July, 2021 is expected to bring in over $206,000,000 in legal cannabis sales across the United States. Last year’s 4th of July report anticipated an 87% increase in sales over the 4th of July weekend, with Americans expected to spend more on cannabis than bbq meats. Historically, consumers spend more than $371 million on chicken during the two weeks leading up to July 4th, equalling about $37 million per day. Akerna predicted cannabis sales to reach over $260 million in just three days, generating about $86 million per day. With the holiday falling on a Sunday this year, dispensaries should be evaluating staffing and preparing inventory ahead of the weekend to ensure they are ready to accommodate these increases in both traffic and sales. Last year, the cannabis industry experienced multiple unique sales accelerators, and those catalysts have carried into 2021. The total number of retail stores and dispensaries in the United States grew nearly 21% last year while nationwide growth maintained through 2021. Mature markets such as Colorado, Oregon and Washington state are averaging 26% year-over-year sales growth; at the same time, newer states such as Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan and Pennsylvania are averaging 136%. With 10 newly legalized markets expected to begin sales in 2021 or 2022, New Frontier Data projects total legal cannabis sales to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16%, to reach $43 billion by 2025. As of May 2021, capital raises in cannabis have more than tripled, reaching $6 billion, signaling increased confidence in projected aggressive cannabis market growth. U.S. marijuana multistate operators reported banner revenue growth in the first three months of this year, boosted by good execution and strong consumer demand in established and newer markets. In the past several months, there has been an increase in both capital raising and M&A as multistate operators seek to strengthen and expand their footprints in high-potential markets. Canadian Mergers & Acquisitions ground to a near standstill from the 2nd half of 2019 through 2020, while U.S. activity remained robust. The U.S. dominance was supported by large transactions like the Curaleaf & Select deal of $949 million in Q1:20 and $830 million Grass Roots deal in Q3:20. Activity in both countries has spiked upward this year. U.S. activity benefitted from an increase in acquisitions of public companies including Liberty Health, Helix TCS, and Bluma Wellness. Canadian activity included a $353 million Canopy Growth divestiture of its ownership in Canopy Rivers. Activity has accelerated in the second quarter with the recently completed $4.5B Tilray/Aphria megamerger in Canada and the $2.1B Trulieve/Harvest deal announced in the U.S. Although consolidation among Canadian LPs in pursuit of positive cash flow is likely to continue, the superior growth potential of the U.S. market is expected to keep U.S. targets at the forefront of M&A activity. Not all joint rolling machines are created equal! Some twist the tops, others fold them. Some offer different sizes, a tamper, or build in check-weigh system. Others have an accuracy of .01g and can work continuously as long as it's supplied with enough ground cannabis. One of them sucks! The convenience of pre-rolled ready-to-smoke joints is so irresistible to many cannabis consumers that pre-roll sales grew 59% last year, from $704 million in 2019 to $1.12 billion in 2020. The growth in pre-roll sales even outpaced the already explosive cannabis market, which grew by only 54.2% over the same period. According to a survey, the top pre-roll product has been "Hybrid - Single Strain" every year since Headset began tracking sales data. However, a segment to watch is pre-rolls infused with cannabis concentrates, which have risen from 12.7% of all pre-roll sales in 2018 to 31.9% of all pre-roll sales in 2021 so far. Another trend is that consumers are buying multi-pack products rather than single pre-rolls. Sales of multipack pre-rolls grew by 69.4% from February 2020 to February 2021, while single pre-roll sales only grew by 18.1% over the same time period, according to the survey. The total U.S. economic impact from marijuana sales in 2021 is expected to reach $92 billion – up more than 30% from last year – and upwards of $160 billion in 2025, according to analysis from the newly published #MJBizFactbook. For every $1 consumers and patients spend at retail locations, an additional $2.50 will be injected into the economy, much of it at the local level. That impact comes directly from the day-to-day needs of workers in the cannabis industry, including spending on life’s necessities such as housing, transportation, entertainment and more. Marijuana businesses, consumers and patients also pay hundreds of millions of dollars in state and local taxes that are used to fund state and local government activities, including schools and roads. In addition, real estate receives a boost from new retail, manufacturing and agricultural businesses moving into an area or established companies expanding, increasing broader demand for commercial properties. Cultivating and manufacturing marijuana can require large investments in equipment and technology that boost not only the local economy but also areas throughout the U.S. The largest market in the U.S., California’s marijuana industry is expected to pump close to $20 billion into the state’s economy in 2021 and will contribute a little more than $500 of economic impact per person. The marijuana markets in Alaska, Colorado and Oregon also will pump almost $1,500 per person into their respective states. The new bill introduced into the House of Representatives aims to stop treating people suffering from drug abuse disorders as criminals, but rather introduce them into the healthcare system. The measure not only aims to eliminate criminal penalties for drug use and possession but is geared towards shifting the perception around drug abuse, moving it from a law enforcement problem to a public health issue. It would also expunge records and provide avenues for resentencing, as well as provide reinvestment in alternative health-centered approaches for people suffering from substance abuse disorders. 71% of those interviewed said that “Federal drug policies are not working and we need to reform them.” 59% said they either fully or somewhat support the idea of decriminalizing small possession of all drugs. 55% support distribution of drugs in small quantities. 67% of those interviewed believed that drug war policies have never and still don't make communities safer and fail to address either drug addiction or crime.
