Welcome back to We Wonder: Lent. All during this season, we have been traveling with Jesus toward Jerusalem, and now we are at the end. Today is Holy Saturday: the last day of the Triduum, and the last day of Lent. It is a day of quiet, and a day of waiting. Jesus lies helpless in the grave, and together we watch to see if God will act, if we will see him again. So for one last day: can we make our minds quiet, and our hearts open? Can we grow in love and gratitude for all that God has done for us? Join me, as we listen to the words from Matthew’s gospel and sit in the quiet dark of Holy Saturday.

We aren’t yet halfway through, and the season is still stretched out in front of us as we make our way with Jesus along the road to Jerusalem, and to the cross. Still, little by little, we will keep walking with Jesus through Matthew’s gospel, as he makes his final journey with his friends. Along the road, we will listen to his words and imagine that we are there with him: that he is speaking directly to us. And we will pay attention, each day, to what we see, and hear, and feel. After all, every day is different; but we still need to meet and listen for God, in all that is happening to us. I wonder what we will notice, as we listen to the same words over and over, all week long? I wonder what we will have to say to God? I hope that you can listen every day this week, and let these words take deep root in your heart. I hope you can picture this season as a journey with Jesus, and come close to him as his time on earth grows short. This week’s reading is from the gospel of Matthew, chapter 18, verses 1 through 5, and 10 through 14. Jesus’s friends have begun to understand who Jesus is, a little: Peter has said out loud that Jesus is the Messiah, the man sent by God to save his people. But they are still learning how Jesus will save them, and what kind of Savior and King he will be. So as they travel along the road, the disciples ask Jesus a question. I wonder what answer they hope he will give?

I hope you can imagine yourself walking alongside Jesus on the path to Jerusalem as we make our way with him up to the cross. This week’s reading is Matthew 17:14-21. Jesus and his three closest friends have just come down from the mountaintop. Peter, James, and John saw Jesus flooded with glory, and they heard a voice from heaven tell them, “This is my Son, and I love him. Listen to him!” Now they have come back down to join the other nine disciples, and a large crowd that has come to them for help.
