Myths That Prevent Gender Parity in Leadership

Have you come face-to-face with any of the prevailing myths about women in the workplace? Last month I interviewed Analiza Wolf, the author of The Myths of Success: A Woman of Color's Guide to Leadership. Analiza’s book, and our conversation, focused on the myths we women, buy into that hinder our growth as leaders. Not too long ago, I was listening to an episode on The McKinsey Podcast, produced by McKinsey & Company. The episode was titled BUSTING MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE. Interesting. Not myths that we women hold about ourselves. Rather, the myths that are held about women in the workplace in general. Then recently I came across an article by Gallup titled THE PATH TO GENDER PARITY IN LEADERSHIP, published March 8, 2024. This article complimented and added to the information shared on The McKinsey Podcast. I found the topic of myths about women all so fascinating that I wanted to share it with you. Emilie Aries on Systems-Level Solutions to Pay Equity

I'm going to get a bit vulnerable here and be transparent that on the Women Taking the Lead podcast I have not given a lot of time to the topic of pay equity. Part of it is because I'm typically not working with women around the areas of negotiating salary. That may come up when a client of mine is being offered a promotion but typically, I'm not dealing with the issue of disparities in pay. And what my guest is going to really underscore for us today is pay equity is not something that comes about because women have good negotiating skills. I know, shocker. Because that's what we've been led to believe for a long time now. If only women would develop certain skills, there wouldn't be so much inequity. My guest Emily Aries is calling BS on that. MEET EMILIE ARIES: Emilie Aries is a speaker, podcaster, author, and the Founder & CEO of Bossed Up, an award-winning leadership development and career services company committed to closing the gender leadership gap. Aries has worked with leaders at Fortune 500 companies to support retention, diversity and inclusion, and human resource initiatives, and has been featured in media outlets including the Washington Post, CNN Money, Buzzfeed, and more. Her book, Bossed Up, serves as a practical roadmap for women who want to set themselves up for sustainable, long-term career success and step up as the boss of their lives. Dr Mary-Clare Race on How to Retain Talent

Hello and welcome to Women Taking the Lead. I’m going to start us off by reading a quote I read not too long ago of my guest today. “As leaders in an increasingly polarized society, it's crucial that we recognize the talent within our organizations. Incredible talents are often overlooked, underutilized, or placed in situations that are bound to fail. The consequence of this is stagnant teams and underperforming businesses because our people feel disconnected. However, it's not the people who are broken; it's our organizational systems that require fixing.” That is a bold statement made by Dr. Mary-Clare Race, the President of Talking Talent. MEET MARY-CLARE RACE Dr. Mary-Clare Race is recognized for her remarkable career spanning four continents. She has played a pivotal role in facilitating business improvement for globally renowned organizations, including Barclays, Goldman Sachs, GSK, Unilever, Coca-Cola, and Estee Lauder Companies, as well as governmental organizations including the British Government, Cabinet Office, and the UK National Health Service. A prominent figure in her field, Dr. Race's research contributions have been published in reputable journals such as Frontiers in Psychology, Mental Illness at Work, and People & Strategy. Analiza Quiroz Wolf on Beliefs That Block You

There are a lot of myths out there about what you need to do to be successful at work. You may already be at a point in your career where you’ve realized this and had to shift gears. And you may still feel like you are walking a tight rope of, for instance, needing to be more decisive but not too decisive because that can work against you as a woman. Or, advocating for yourself more but not too much because that also has consequences. On this episode of Women Taking the Lead I’m joined by Analiza Quiroz Wolf to talk about the strategies and practices that will actually lead you to success in the workplace. IN THIS EPISODE ANALIZA AND I DISCUSSED: ·         How her own story influenced the need to debunk the myths of success and the research and experiences that went into it. ·         How our strategies for success often come from those who want the best for us but those strategies don’t always translate into success at work. ·         The notion that you will be seen, acknowledged and rewarded by focusing on your responsibilities and working hard. ·         How growing your influence is about developing relationships with others and again doesn’t involve a lot of hard work. ·         Letting go of leadership stereotypes so your own strengths as a leader can emerge. Are You as Self-Aware as You Think You Are?

Would you describe yourself as being self-aware? Most people do. But according to research done by organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich and her team involving 5000 participants, it may be that only 10%-15% of the population is actually self-aware. Additionally, they found that when someone considers themselves to be highly experienced, that estimation may keep them from questioning their assumptions, seeking evidence that goes against their own position, or continuing to learn. This played out in more experienced managers overestimating their leadership effectiveness as compared to newer managers.   In the last episode we covered how to lead with emotional intelligence, and benefits of utilizing empathy in your leadership. In this episode we will expand on two of the five components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness and self-regulation. Additionally, you get a few suggestions on how to develop these abilities, so you feel more confident and creative in your role. RESOURCES LEADERSHIP COACHING https://calendly.com/d/djm-mnc-2km. How to Build Team Trust

Have you ever wondered why some teams do okay while others effortlessly tackle challenges? The secret lies in one word: TRUST. In fast-paced environments, team cohesion is more crucial. A cohesive team, built on trust, can leverage diverse skills, tools, and resources to conquer any obstacle. Building and maintaining trust is not a one-and-done exercise. Everything you do is either growing, maintaining, or diminishing the level of trust on your team. This episode explores the role of team trust and how it can transform your team dynamics. I'm covering the key benefits of team trust, the obstacles that destroy trust - or at the very least prevent it from growing, and how you can build trust on your team if trust is low. Overcoming Stereotypes About Female Leaders

Do you have a strong leadership style that has been mislabeled as harsh or uncaring? Every now and again, as I’m connecting with each of you on LinkedIn, I’ll ask if you have any topic suggestions for the podcast. I recently got a response that immediately piqued my interest. The response read, “One thing I struggle with as a leader is gender stereotypes and expectations on how a female leader needs to act. People assume female leaders need to always be nurturing and soft, and when they need to be direct or decisive people find that harsh. If you have a podcast that addresses this issue and how to overcome it, I would love to listen.” Me too! So here it is. RESOURCES LEADERSHIP COACHING https://calendly.com/d/djm-mnc-2km. Malia Monaco on How to Create Positive Experiences Through Change by Building Team Trust

Have you ever worked on a team going through a lot of change? I’m guessing you have many times and in many different scenarios. I’m also guessing your experience of that change had a lot to do with the level of trust that the team had for one another and the leaders of the team and/or organization. When there is a high level of trust the impacts of the change are softened. When there is low trust change can be traumatic. Clearly, we want to work in teams that have high trust but if that’s not the current condition, how do we get there? To answer that question I’ve asked Malia Monaco to join me for this episode.   IN THIS EPISODE MALIA AND I TALK ABOUT: ·         The work that Malia does for leaders and organizations through Positive Intelligence involving change management and trust building. ·         What it takes to build trust in teams and what becomes possible when trust grows. ·         Why it’s important to get to the root of the problem rather than tackling the symptoms, which is where many organizational initiatives go wrong. ·         How our belief system will shape what we see around us and determine whether we bring harsh judgment or blameless discernment to our reactions. ·         While insights are important, they only make up 20% of sustainable long-lasting change what makes up the other 80%. Tawn Williams on a Unique Approach to Corporate Wellness

Corporate wellness programs are very common now but how effective are they? Many people talk about what their company offer but when you dig in many of these programs are underutilized. The reasons, and they vary, include the programs don’t fit the demographics of the organization, there’s a lack of awareness of what the company offers, lack of accessibility to the programs. What Do You Need in Any Given Moment?

How are you at knowing exactly what you need in any given moment? This may sound silly but, really, how tuned in are you to what you really need, and not what you think you need or think you want. Many of us get swept away by the day and how we think we should be functioning. When the workday comes to a close, we’re a little dizzy thinking about what happened. On these days, if you’re honest with yourself, you probably also realize you put your needs – be they physical, mental or emotion needs – on the back burner to get through the day. This would be something you could easily recover from if it happened once in a blue moon. However, if busy days are your normal, and you don't regularly check in with yourself to determine what you need, this episode is perfect for you. How to Release the Grip Imposter Syndrome Has on You with Kim Meninger

Let’s talk about Imposter Syndrome. While Imposter Syndrome is a universal experience there are times when this experience is activated more than others. A common trigger for Imposter Syndrome is when we take on new and expanded roles. There’s excitement at first and then the potential for doubting yourself will creep in. Imposter Syndrome, and the reactions women often have to it - overpreparing or withdrawing, can hobble women just as they are given an opportunity to make a greater impact. In August I had an opportunity to speak on a panel for Aspen Tech’s Women’s Leadership Forum. That is where I met Kim Meninger. We instantly clicked and the added bonus is Kim specializes in Imposter Syndrome and even did a TED Talk on the subject. Dr. Brittney Ezell on Redefining Failure

Are you ready to redefine failure and discover how to tap into confidence? I’M CHATTING WITH Dr. Brittney Ezell, a former athlete and motivational speaker, WHO shares her unique perspective on failure, courage, and quitting. Here are the key takeaways from this thought-provoking discussion: 1. FAILURE IS NOT THE END. Brittney emphasizes that failure is not the opposite of success but an integral part of it. It's an event, not a quality of a person. Instead of fearing failure, we should embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow. 2. COURAGE IS A CHOICE. Courage isn't an inherent trait; it's a choice we make when faced with challenges. By acknowledging that courage can be summoned when needed, we can build our confidence over time. 3. CONFIDENCE IS ROOTED IN PAST SUCCESS. Confidence is not something we can instantly generate. It's a product of our past successes. Building confidence is like stacking small wins, which eventually lead to a strong belief in oneself. 4. THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORSHIP. Surrounding yourself with mentors who hold up a mirror to your potential can be transformational. They help you see your unique strengths and capabilities. 5. QUITTING VS. PIVOTING. Quitting is giving up on yourself; it's discarding your skills, experiences, and unique qualities. Pivoting, on the other hand, is about redirecting your path while retaining your core self. Dr. Brittney Ezell will be a keynote at The Maine Women's Conference on October 25 in Portland, Maine. This conversation is a little taste of what she is going to share at the conference and I encourage you to come to Maine, come to the conference and see Brittany in person. Hot Topic: Menopause and Your Workplace with Tamsen Fadal

How companies support their female employees that are going through perimenopause and menopause is starting to hit the headlines. Think about it. Most women go through the menopause transition between the ages of 45 and 60. This is when women are in their professional prime. It’s nearly impossible to be your best at work when you are dealing with hot flashes, fatigue and brain fog. This is especially true when there’s no support for what you are going through.
