About

This week we take a look back at the Hellraiser roundtable discussion where we compare the 1987 original Hellraiser and the 2022 remake, highlighting their respective storylines and themes. Hellraiser 1987 takes us on a twisted love story intertwined with supernatural elements, while Hellraiser 2022 immerses us in a dark and mysterious contemporary party. Both versions offer their own take on Pinhead and the Cenobites, capturing the essence of the Hellraiser story.

In the 1980s, Pinhead was a British dude with pins in his head. While his appearance was certainly unique, his character didn't strike fear into my heart. Maybe it was the voice that just sounded too masculine and normal. It lacked that eerie distortion that I expect from a horror character. Plus, let's be honest, I've known people who look like that guy in real life.

But fast forward to the modern day Pinhead, and it's a whole different story. The design is more horror chic, and it genuinely terrifies me. The new Pinhead looks alien, otherworldly. I appreciate that they moved away from the fully BDSM style and embraced a more androgynous aesthetic. In this new portrayal, Pinhead is genuinely creepy as fuck, and that's exactly what I want from this character. It's a refreshing take and a departure from the original, but in a good way.

Whether you're a long-time fan of Hellraiser or new to the franchise, our podcast offers a comprehensive exploration of the original and remake, Pinhead's character evolution, and the importance of trans representation in film and television. Join us as we navigate the dark and twisted world of Hellraiser and delve into the depths of its impact and legacy.
