Whats the best way to get started as a brand new leader???? I know when I as a brand new leader I wanted to make a good first impression, make a huge impact, and not mess anything up, but I was nervous because I didnt know what I needed to do to make that happen. Can I just say, if youre stepping into a new role, I hope youre proud of yourself for even thinking about taking this on? Yes, it can be scary at first, but its also the greatest gift that you can give others. Working for a leader like you, someone who is eager to grow and get better for the benefit of the entire team, is a privilege in my book. But also knowing a few of the things I shared in todays episode can help you get a speed boost right out of the gate. Prior to jumping into online leadership and life coaching which I do now, I worked for the Los Angeles Police Department for 20 years. I was put into several positions where I didnt feel prepared or qualified to lead. Peoples lives would depend on me, and thats some crazy pressure to perform, especially when youre brand new. Now I know your situation might be different than mine, but I also want you to know that if I can get through that, you can do this too. Do you have an upcoming job or promotional interview, that you want to feel fully prepared for so you can crush it? If so, that is the purpose of todays episode. I answered the question "What do I need to know to make my next interview the best one Ive ever had?" Back when I was interviewing people as a supervisor/manager, I was taught this principle: "Past actions are predictors of the future." Once I understood what that meant (and how to communicate that during the interview) is when my promotions started to happen with LAPD. I had done 6 interviews without knowing what I shared in todays spisode, and did not get any of those jobs. After I made these few tweaks I talk about today, I had 4 consecutive interviews where I got the jobs I was going for, which allowed me to reach the rank of Sergeant II before retiring from LAPD early this year. Its not because Im "magical" at speaking, because obviously Im not.
