Help Kids Grow Tall

Allowing children and teens to reach their full height potential is based on several critical factors, from heredity to adequate nutrition, hormonal balance, stress management, and sleep patterns. Upset is Optional. - by Karen Howard

Bob Duggan was a young priest who left the Vatican to live a life committed to teaching a new worldview of health. He worked to legalize acupuncture, founded a school and created Penn North, a non-profit addiction treatment facility in Baltimore, Maryland, where they continue to use his acupuncture program. A portion of the proceeds from this book will go to support this vibrant community center. His views on transforming our disease-based health care system to one embedded in wellness and true disease prevention were sought by business leaders, lawmakers and political campaigns. Bob’s last gift was to hone his work into a series of simple practices, each centered on understanding that how you feel in your body will impact your thoughts, actions and health. Bob taught me how to breathe and changed my life. The stories in this book illustrate how the practices can create peace in your body and in your world of work and family. Karen visits with Mark Alyn to talk about how you change your life. You can get a free copy of the book on Amazon tomorrow March 5th.

If You Can’t Sleep Try This

If you’re over 45, you’re probably not sleeping as well as you once did. You may have even grown accustomed to the brain fog that muddles your thinking. You’re not the only one feeling drowsy. The CDC says more than a third of American adults are sleep deprived on a regular basis. The answer may be combining tried-and-true sleep basics with new sleep technology. “Sleeping fewer than six hours on a regular basis is a health concern,” comments neurologist Dan Cohen, MD, who has dedicated his career to helping people sleep better. “Decades of research, involving millions of people, show that chronic sleep deprivation is associated with increased risks of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dementia.” OUR SLEEP CYCLES GET MESSED UP AS WE AGE Delta, or slow wave sleep stage, is associated with deep, restorative sleep. Delta sleep occurs mainly in the first half of the night, enabling you to sleep the rest of the night. “Delta sleep is more important than the other sleep stages of sleep regarding physical health. It is when the body secretes human growth hormone. Delta sleep enables the body and brain to recover from daytime activities, relieves stress and can have a dramatic impact on overall health,” explains Cohen. “It is also associated with performing better on memory tasks the next day.” Dr. Cohen joins Mark Alyn to talk about better sleep on this episode of Late Night Health.

God, Love & Yoga

I’ve owned and operated Yoga Sanctuary in some capacity in different locations for about fifteen years. It has been a blessed journey with people entering through the doors and all the eclectic places traveled to share the goodness of calming tactics. The participants have been eight to eighty plus. People that have connected with Yoga here at the Sanctuary and have moved away, quite often Zoom Yoga and stay in practice. The people that I’ve had the honor to work with, bring positivity and light to their life have been school children, counselors, nurses, executives, teachers, musicians, and many with other walks of life. It has been a pleasure to go into schools and share Yoga, meditation, calming and breathing methods. I feel that this has been my mission and purpose in life. Forgotten Populists - History Repeats Itself!

Hard-pressed farmers launched the original Populist movement, calling for a widening democracy to counter corporate monopoly and profiteering. Their resentment of the rich grew as the economy alternated between rapid growth and economic depression, producing both millionaires and destitute families. The Populist challenge to unbridled capitalism would finally force Republicans and especially Democrats to recognize the growing support for progressive change within their ranks. Fast-forward to modern times. Today’s pundits would have us believe that “populists” of the left—no less so than the right—are uniquely drawn to authoritarian politics. According to Babson,” The historical Populists are forgotten today as commentators tell us that Donald Trump, a self-proclaimed billionaire, is somehow also a ‘populist.’"It is because of the political climate of recent times that Babson began to explore how it was possible that politicians of completely different mindsets could somehow be connected to the idea of “populism.” From that exploration came his decision to write FORGOTTEN POPULISTS. “In 2016 I began to wonder how it was possible to describe two men as different as Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump as somehow sharing a link to ‘populism,’” Babson recalls, “one on the left, the other on the right. The more I read and the deeper I probed, the more absurd this claim turned out to be. The original Populists of the 1890s would have detested the likes of Trump, a right-wing billionaire from New York City. “‘Right-wing populism’ is an oxymoron,” says Babson. “The very term ‘populist’ was originated by groups that favored economic cooperatives, public ownership of railroads and utilities, low- cost federal loans for struggling farmers, postal savings banks, and an end to the gold standard. Charlatans who want to manipulate the voting public are demagogues, not Populists, and I wanted to write a history that makes that clear.” Author Steve Babson, Ph.D visits with Mark Alyn.

AI Reviews Award-Winning "The Cloud"

It is fitting that Robert Rivenbark’s award-winning speculative science fiction novel is the first book to ever be reviewed by AI avatars. In Robert’s world, the narrative revolves around a speculative view of our future and the place AI holds within it. His fascination with speculative fiction is deeply rooted in his concern about the future of humanity. His exploration of AI was natural extension of his interest in VR. AI Book reviews raise a number of interesting questions: · How are the AI avatars generated?· Are book liner notes used to provide a baseline for avatars?· How is the software prompted to generate the reviews? View the AI reviews at https://henryroipr.com/2023/05/10/the-cloud-by-robert-rivenbark-2/ “Some media pundits predict that AI will obsolete and annihilate humanity,” author Rivenbark stated. “In fact, the greater danger lies in an authoritarian regime pairing AI with virtual reality and subjecting humanity to a previously unimaginable state of mental, spiritual, and political slavery. As a species, we must choose whether to use AI as a beneficial tool that can create good things such as my AI avatar book review tour—or allow the greedy, corrupt, and power mad to enslave us with it. There’s reason for hope. As I dramatize in my novel , the human spirit always rises up against such oppression. That fight helps us evolve toward a more enlightened state of being. It’s the kiln in which our souls are forged,” Rivenbark continued. was published by Story Merchant Books, $12.99 softcover. Women's Health - With Dr. Dana Cohen .mp3

As women age, many health issues can be overlooked-- largely because they go undiscussed. Dr. Dana Cohen, a respected physician, author and authority in women's health is here to help us break the silence on the most important health challenges for women over the age of 40-- and she wants men to be an important part of normalizing these conversations for their partners. Talking Points: Dr. Dana Cohen, a nationally renowned internal and integrative medicine specialist whose multi-disciplinary approach has helped transform the lives of many women using a variety of conventional and complementary therapies will shine a spotlight on important, but often overlooked health issues that matter most to women aged 40+ and their partners who want to support them, but don’t know how: • Misconceptions in Menopause • "Menopause Starts in Your 50s": Some believe menopause begins in the late 50s, but it can actually start in the late 40s or earlier. Additionally, understanding when perimenopause ends and menopause officially begins can empower women to seek timely medical advice and support. • "All Women Experience Severe Symptoms": Menopause symptoms vary widely, and not all women experience severe hot flashes, mood swings, or night sweats. Lifestyle and nutrition choices can help reduce the severity of these symptoms. • "Menopause Means the End of Intimacy": Many people believe that menopause signals the end of a satisfying sex life. The truth is that it's a transition and not a stop sign for intimacy, and there are ways to maintain a healthy and comfortable sex life during this stage in life, which can be both informative and reassuring. • Hidden Viral and Cancer Risks • Safe Sex Practices Still Matter: While women may assume that the risk of STDs diminishes with age, the importance of safe sex practices and regular STD testing is crucial. Potential consequences of untreated STDs can lead to life-threatening diagnosis like cervical cancer. • Regular Screening Remains Essential: Many women may think that they no longer need cervical cancer screenings after a certain age, such as Pap smears and HPV tests, which are essential as cervical cancer is a lifelong risk. Early detection can lead to prevention and peace of mind. • HPV Doesn't Discriminate by Age: Contrary to popular belief, HPV (Human Papillomavirus) can affect women of all ages, including those aged 40 and above and vaccination alone may not protect you. Additionally, women should note that they can be infected by HPV early in life and not know it because high-risk HPV (the cancer causing kind) has no symptoms and can lie dormant until the immune system begins to decline. At that point, the immune system can no longer suppress the infection and it can resurface, manifesting as cervical cancer or one of the five other HPV-related cancers. It should not be assumed that someone's partner has been cheating and is the cause of a new HPV diagnosis. Boosting your immune system is vital to clearing infections and potentially preventing cervical cancer. Recent studies have highlighted a concerning increase in cervical cancer cases from human papillomavirus (HPV), prompting a call for proactive measures. Amid these findings, a breakthrough in the battle against HPV has emerged. Two studies published in the Frontiers in Oncology journal have showcased the potential of AHCC supplementation to bolster the immune system's ability to clear high-risk HPV infections more swiftly than conventional methods. AHCC has also been studied for its effectiveness with supporting a strong immune system during cold and flu season and against the COVID-19 virus, so for all my patients, I recommend AHCC as part of their daily supplement regimen for ongoing protections against multiple threats to the immune system. • Uncomfortable Bedroom Conversations • Vaginal Dryness and Discomfort: This is a common issue that can affect women as they age, however it's a natural part of aging and can be addressed with various treatments, such as moisturizers, lubricants, or non-invasive medical interventions. • No Being “In the Mood”: Many women experience changes in their sexual desire as they age, which can be concerning for both partners. Changes in libido are normal and can be influenced by various factors, including hormonal shifts and stress. However, there are ways to maintain intimacy to strengthen relationships. • Pelvic Weakness and Pain: Pelvic health concerns, such as discomfort or urinary incontinence during intimacy, can be embarrassing to discuss, but are essential for overall well-being. Certain exercises and new therapies can improve pelvic health and enhance comfort in the bedroom.

Vital Assistance To Disadvantaged Americans

Carolina Schneider, MS, RD, a registered dietitian known as “Carolina the Green RD” says the farm bill's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - formally known as food stamps - provides vital assistance to millions of disadvantaged Americans to ensure that all people have access to nutritious food, however there are some crucial nutrition gaps that demand attention from Congress that voters can elevate to advocate for an updated farm bill to improve SNAP and enhance the program's quality and nutritional offerings for all Americans. Carolina visits with Mark Alyn on this episode of late Night Health. Some points • Why We Need the Farm Bill: The farm bill is a matter of concern when it comes to nutrition because it plays a crucial role in shaping food and agricultural policies in the United States. The bill influences various aspects of our food system, including agricultural production, food access, nutrition programs, and public health. • The farm bill includes provisions for nutrition assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps millions of low-income individuals and families access nutritious food. Changes in funding, eligibility criteria, and program structure within the bill can have direct implications for the food security and well-being of vulnerable populations. • Many children and families are dependent on SNAP benefits so nutritional options should be a top priority. • The Farm Bill can promote or hinder the development of local and regional food systems. By supporting initiatives that increase access to fresh, locally sourced foods, the bill can contribute to healthier diets and stronger local economies.· Add Vitamin D Supplementation: Recent data published since the pandemic clearly highlights the critical role of vitamin D in addressing numerous health concerns. However, to meet therapeutic vitamin D levels of 40-60 ng/ml, SNAP falls short in providing solutions. Something as simple as adding vitamin D3 supplements to SNAP offers recipients a solution to address a range of health challenges faced by families, including preterm births, depression, respiratory infections, asthma, cancer, and chronic diseases like cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes. • Sun exposure can be impractical. Especially when we are told to wear sunscreen. • People of color face elevated risk due to melanin blocking vitamin D absorption, making them more susceptible to chronic diseases and COVID-19 complications. • Some individuals may have dietary restrictions or preferences that limit their intake of foods naturally rich in vitamin D, such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), egg yolks, and fortified dairy products (i.e. vegans). This can make it challenging to obtain sufficient vitamin D solely through food sources. • You can easily ask your elected officials of Congress to add vitamin D3 to the farm bill at: www.All4VitaminD.com http://www.all4vitamind.com/ • Shop at Local Independent Grocers and Natural Product Stores: Independent grocery stores and natural product stores can serve as community gathering spaces, fostering a sense of belonging and connection. They may host events on nutrition, provide more personalized advice on nutrition choices, and provide a gathering place for neighbors to interact with one another. • Independent grocers and natural product stores typically prioritize customer service and foster a more personalized shopping experience. They often develop relationships with customers, offering tailored recommendations, addressing specific dietary needs, and providing a more attentive and friendly atmosphere. • Independent grocers and natural product stores often prioritize sourcing products from local farmers, producers, and suppliers. By purchasing from independent grocers, you contribute to the support and sustainability of local food systems, reducing the reliance on long-distance transportation and supporting local agricultural businesses. • You can Google 'Natural Grocers Directory' or 'INFRA Store Directory' to find an independent grocer and natural product store near you.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY - THE DRIVE FOR CLEANER LOW EMMISSION ALTERNATIVES

When parents put a child on a school bus, the expectation is that the young person will arrive safe and ready to learn. Now, with significant funding available through the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program, there’s never been a better time to prioritize clean and more efficient modes of school transportation. The goal is to replace inefficient gas or diesel-powered buses with safer propane or electric alternatives. TUCKER PERKINS, President/CEO of PERC, the Propane Education & Research Council, ishares cleaner options for the nation’s school bus fleets, and a study that shows how low-emission buses are linked to improved test scores. We’ll also provide information about school districts using propane buses in your market, and a the unique BetterOurBuses.com http://betterourbuses.com/ program. More than 1.3 million students will ride a propane school bus this year. __ __

The Butterfly Cage

Rachel Zemach became Deaf at age ten, and has lived with one foot in both the Deaf and hearing worlds since then. After teaching Deaf students for ten years in a hearing, public school she became more solidified in her Deaf-with-a-capital-D identity. She loved thee job passionately but found it a shockingly, un-necessarily obstacle-laden environment for Deaf students and felt compelled to write a memoir describing it, with the goal of educating hearing people and enacting change. THE BUTTERFLY CAGE came out April 26, 2023 and has gotten strong reviews. As a Deaf person, she doesn’t listen to radio, and had never heard of this show. But when talking with Mark Alyn of Late Night Health she was struck by two things: the passion HE has, when it comes to health issues, and the quick understanding of a person with little knowledge of the Deaf perspective, once they are exposed to it. As an added bonus, Mark wears hearing aids. Reaching hard of hearing people, or “Inbetweeners,” as she calls them, is important to Zemach, because many are less connected to the Deaf community. They are struggling with similar issues to more fully Deaf people, but without access to the support, camaraderie or coping mechanisms Deaf people have and share with each other. Thus, they experience the problems of hearing “loss,” while missing out on its benefits. This is the essence of her book, and of the conversation that transpired here; the beauty and gifts of Deaf culture, even for “hard of hearing” people. It also touched on language deprivation, the innocent but harmful mind-set that leads hearing people (including administrators) to assume that speaking, listening devices, and “fitting in” are good goals for Deaf children in public schools, and how that mind-set causes major and often irreparable, life-time problems.

Gender Labels

What if no one—gay or straight or bi, trans or cis or nonbinary—was “born that way”? In award-winning psychoanalysts AVGI SAKETOPOULOU and ANN PELLEGRINI challenge the argument widely embraced by rights activists and members of the LGBTQ+ community that gender identity is innate and immutable. “There is nothing wrong with being gay, queer, gender nonconforming, or trans, nor is any of these an undesirable or pathological outcome,” Pellegrini stresses. “Genderqueer and sexually diverse individuals can and do live full, pleasurable, exciting lives—which is not to say that they are spared the miseries that befall everyone as part of the human condition. Indeed, trans people and queer people should get to have all the feels, including negative or bad feelings.” With a vision of expanding the narrowminded view and treatment of queer and trans people by analysts and society at large, Ann Pellegrini talks with Mark Alyn about gender identity.
