The Doctor's Farmacy with Mark Hyman, M.D.

Dr. Mark Hyman

About

We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food and health care policies that don’t support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food and politics. New episodes are released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. I hope you'll join me.

Doctors Reveal How They Heal Their Autoimmune Disease

They include type 1 diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, and dozens of others. While your body is designed to fight off harmful things like infections, toxins, allergens, or a stress response, with autoimmune issues the body directs a hostile attack on its own joints, brain, skin, and more. In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Cynthia Li and Dr. Terry Wahls about their personal stories of working through autoimmunity and how it led them to help others using Functional Medicine. They also dive into the underlying triggers of inflammation such as stress, hidden infections, food allergies or sensitivities, toxic exposure, genetic predisposition, nutrient deficiencies, and leaky gut. How Fasting Can Support Hormones, Muscle, And Heal The Body

There’s been a lot of recent discussion around fasting, and for good reason. But one thing that often slips through the cracks is the differences between men and women, and why women need to take a specific approach to fasting that honors their hormones. You may have heard the recent buzz around fasting and a controversial headline associating it with cardiovascular death (which was not peer-reviewed, by the way). So today, I’m resharing this popular episode with holistic health expert Dr. Mindy Pelz to shed light on what we really know about the safety of fasting, and the dos and don’ts, particularly for women. We discuss: __ __ Fasting can be an incredibly healing practice, but it’s got to be done the right way—especially for women! Why It is Essential to Prepare Your Bodies Before You Conceive a Baby

Typically, the focus on reproductive health falls on the woman, and it begins after conception has already occurred, with minimal emphasis on diet and nutrition beyond prenatal vitamins.  However, the pre-conception window is a foundational time for both partners to take charge of their hormonal, metabolic, and overall health to ensure the healthiest sperm and egg possible for a healthy pregnancy and, most importantly, a healthy baby.  In today's episode, we're discussing the essential steps both men and women can take to foster a nurturing environment for conception. We'll delve into lab tests and tools to support hormone and reproductive wellness, the challenges and insults of our modern-day lifestyles, and how we can use Functional Medicine to take a proactive approach by embracing diet, supplements, and exercise to prime couples for a successful pregnancy while safeguarding against developmental conditions like autism and ADHD that are doubling, or even tripling from one generation to the next.  Whether you're just starting to think about having kids or already on your pregnancy path, this conversation is for you.  In this episode I discuss:  __ __ THIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY RUPA HEALTH AND AG1. Is Hormone Replacement Therapy in Menopause Helpful or Harmful: Sifting Through the Science for a Personalized Approach to Relieve Suffering and Improve Your Healthspan

Recognizing menopause as a gradual, uniquely personal transition rather than an abrupt change is crucial. This insight can help empower women to take proactive, supportive measures early on, ensuring a smoother journey through this natural phase of life. Today, Dr. Cindy Geyer from the UltraWellness Center joins me as we unravel the Functional Medicine perspective and approach to menopause. Our conversation highlights the crucial role of lab testing in uncovering the root causes of symptoms, paving the way for tailored nutrition and lifestyle interventions. Moreover, we critically examine the limitations of traditional medical approaches and discuss the nuances of hormone replacement therapy, the different forms, and who may benefit the most from this treatment. Dr. Cindy Geyer received her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. The answer lies not only in our modern-day, high-paced, stressful environment but at the end of our forks.  In this episode of my Health Bites series, I discuss why our brains are so broken, the root causes driving neuroinflammation, and how this drives disconnection between our prefrontal cortex (the adult in the room) and amygdala (our reactive, child-like brain), causing our anxiety and emotions to take over. We’ll also discuss the research clearly showing how our toxic SAD is a key driver of our mental health crisis and how you can eat (and supplement) your way out of many mental health issues.  This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth and Happy Egg. The researchers put a vegan diet head-to-head with an omnivorous diet in twenty-two pairs of identical twins. The buzz around this study has been immense, sparking conversations everywhere—from social media to professional circles. Adding to the excitement, this research forms the basis of a new Netflix documentary called "You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment."  In this episode of my series, I discuss the many conflicts of interest, funding sources, and hidden agendas that were not fully disclosed but could have had a major hand in clouding the study's conclusions and real-world applications. We’ll also get into the Netflix docuseries itself—what they got right vs. what they got wrong, as well as the Functional Medicine approach to diet and how we can feed our bodies to create health while taking care of the planet in a healthy, sustainable, and ethical way.
