Episode 241: "Meet Paul McCartney" (1980 Interview)

Hello 2Legs Faithful! This week we chose to analyse (in real time) another vintage Paul interview. As we have done in the past, (1986's Paul McCartney Special) etc. This time around we opted to view the rare 1980 Interview conducted by Tim Rice of all people which was recorded in May 1980 and later released that August. This was a promotional piece to promote McCartney II which had just been released. We like to focus on interviews pre-1989/90 when Paul's interviews became more formulaic with his answers. And certainly any interview pre-December 1980 are valuable. We find that to be the case with this one. And would a video interview about a new solo album in 1980 have happened without the events that happened in January of that year? We discuss all this and more. How do you feel about Paul's interviews over the years? Let us know in the comments! See ya next time  Andy & Tom

Episode 239: Interview: Daryl Easlea (Record Collector Magazine)

Hi all! For Episode 239 Andy and Tom invited Daryl Easlea who edited and assembled the special edition of Record Collector Magazine first published in the UK in December and arriving Stateside in January. Daryl is a lifelong collector on all things Beatles, Solo and McCartney and has been in the industry for the past 25 years. He assembled a great team of writers for this issue. There is a submission for every studio album, sections on live, classical, and Firemen albums. Retrospective essays, and one of the most thorough (UK) discographies we've ever seen. If you didn't snap this up, get it here! https://shop.recordcollectormag.com/product/RCMACCA/rc-special-paul-mccartney or 'Do It Now' as the man sings! Episode 238: "All The Best!"

Hi Everyone! Fresh and Rested from the FEST, Episode 238 finds Andy and Tom discussing the second compilation hits package from Paul, All The Best! from 1987 and it's UK vs US configurations and our earliest memories with it. We think it holds up rather well and a brilliant marketing and promotional campaign ensured the album sold well in the homeland (#2) while not doing as well in the US (#62). It was a pretty pivotal moment in Macca's career coming after some bad critical reviews with Give My Regards To Broad Street (84) and Press To Play (86). (Even tho we still love them). He was also pushing a new single at the time with 'Once Upon A Long Ago.' We discuss this and ponder other potential tracks that could've gone on it. Ta Ra, All The Best! :) Andy and Tom

Episode 236: "Paul & George Part II" (with Eoghan Lyng)

This week on 2Legs we were delighted to have back Mr. Eoghan Lyng (Author: George Harrison in the 1970s, U2onTrack) and contributor to publications Culture Sonar, Penny Black Music and Far Out Magazine for Part II of our "Deep Dive" on the Paul & George relationship. This installment centres on the years 1976 to 1981. While not a prolific period of trading barbs between the two but there are some nice quotes from the pair during this interval. We discuss among other topics, the 1978 Rutles Film All You Need Is Cash  and Paul's response to it, Ringo's wedding and working together in 1981 for 'All Those Years Ago'. Eoghan also recently interviewed Genesis Guitarist Steve Hackett. (Link Below) We definitely have enough "legs" for a part 3 as we progress through the 1980s. Thanks Eoghan for coming on our show again!  Andy & Tom Eoghan's Links: https://eoghanlyngwriter.wordpress.com/ https://eoghanlyngwriter.wordpress.com/ X http://eoghanlyng5074: Hackett Interview https://pennyblackmusic.co.uk/Home/Details?id=27994

Hi gang,  As we prepare for the 2024 Fest in a few weeks we did a quick fun one for E235. This week Andy and Tom rolled off a bunch of our favs. Some you probably would guess, some others. Not very ballad heavy you would think! We also discuss some recent and upcoming appearances on other people's channel's/shows and sneak some NFL Playoff talk. Stay warm (those of you east of the Mississippi!) And a big Thank You to Dylan Sevey for our new intro! Andy and Tom

First issued in December 2020, here we are again with another variant. 3 different "swirl" colours. Joining Tom and Andy for 232 is original 2Legs Co-Host David Gargalino and we discuss marketing strategies and why we would or would not decide to go for it. Did any of you go for it? Episode 231: Ken Dashow

We were honoured to have legendary DJ Ken Dashow (Q104.3 FM in New York) join us for Episode 231! If you are in or from the NYC area and a Beatles fan you will know this voice by heart! Ken has been on the air in NYC since 1982. He began his career in earnest starting out at WNEW 102.7 (Where Rock "Lived") and has been at Q104.3 (iHeartMedia) since 1997. He is the afternoon drive host during weekdays and on Sunday's hosts his own "Breakfast With The Beatles" programme. A Native New Yorker (like Andy), he has a career in radio that is second to none in terms of his staying power, his love for what he does and the message he continues to deliver every day to his listeners. He has interviewed Paul on two occasions and maintained a life long friendship with Denny Laine (which we cover in this episode) up until his passing last week. Ken has relationships and friendships with colleagues across the rock world, (including members of Wings) and notably Little Steven Van Zandt (Come on Stevie, prog ain't that bad!) as well as Paul's current touring band. Ken has also served as the MC at the Fest For Beatles Fans for a number of years now and can be found at the NY/NJ Fest every year on the Main Stage.  We discuss the recent Beatles news, stories of meeting Paul and Denny and his career overall. This will go down as one of our favourite episodes ever and we thank Ken for the time he gave us! Ken's link https://q1043.iheart.com/featured/ken-dashow/

Episode 230: ”Magical Mystery Tour” (with Steve Matteo)

Roll Up, Roll Up For Episode 230! Steve Matteo, author of the new book Act Naturally: The Beatles On Film joins us this week for a dive into the Paul-centric and driven project and the Beatles 3rd film, Magical Mystery Tour. Steve has published other works on the Beatles and is a regular Fest attendee as well. He will be at the NYC Fest in February. Steve chronicles his methods on research and we contexualise the MMT period (post-Epstein death etc). While it may not be as revered as Help! and certainly not A Hard Day's Night, Magical Mystery Tour is worthy of a viewing if only for the performance of 'I Am The Walrus'. Denny Laine (1944-2023)

Andy went live on our channel (Tom was tied up) when we learned that founding Wings member Denny Laine succumbed to cancer this past week.  Denny was a stronghold for Paul through the 1970s when Paul needed companionship the most. His contributions to Paul's music and his own will stand the test of time. Andy paid his respects and took comments/questions from our YouTube audience on 5th December 2023. RIP Denny.    'We've Already Said.... Goodbye.'   'No Words For My Love'

Episode 228: Recent Collaborations!

Well, as we did a rare thing and dropped a new show on the opening weekend of the month given the highly anticipated release of 'Now And Then' on 2nd November we dropped 227 that weekend and it has performed very well for us! One of our best! Thank you everyone! We took the week off as we flipped schedules and are back this week with a brand new show discussing Paul's recent Musical Collaborations. Paul has participated in 4 recent recordings. He appeared with Dolly Parton  (& Ringo) and others on her version of 'Let It Be' on her recent album Rockstar.  He appears on Jimmy Buffet's final LP "Equal Strain On All Parts" on a track called 'My Gummy Kicked In'. He wrote and plays on 'Feeling The Sunshine' a song he wrote for Ringo for his latest EP Rewind Forward and lastly contributes bass on a new Rolling Stones song titled 'Bite My Head Off' off their new LP Hackney Diamonds. We rank and give our thoughts on these performances and how they stack up against each other and also show a bit of our new Red/Blue/Now And Then Merch and discuss the upcoming appearances for Ken Womack's new book on Mal Evans. What do you think of Paul's contributions on these latest songs? Thanks as always for supporting us 2Legs faithful! Tom and Andy

Episode 226: Electric Arguments!

Finally! After a few years and many requests we finally take a deep dive into the 3rd Fireman album, 2008's Electric Arguments'. Arguably what could be considered another solo album like McCartney II or III, this album 15 years on has been lost a bit with the embarrassment of studio albums released between 2005 and now. Tom could not make this week's show, so joining Andy is original 2Legs Co-Founder David Gargalino. We talk Beatles/Now & Then and also dive into a little bit of prog rock with YES/King Crimson talk towards the end! Does this album still resonate for you? It does for us (maybe even more now). Let us know!

This week on the show Tom and Andy (with a big thank you to our friend Kyle Hand for the suggestion) come up with 3 documentaries we would like to see produced (Beatles Anthology style) on certain eras in Paul's career. How would the narrative be told etc. Fun little exercise. We like our choices. What eras would you choose?

Tom and Andy return for a new show for October! This week we have a quick chat about 'Helen Wheels' which celebrates it's 50th Anniversary this month. Our thoughts on the song as a standalone single, and it's "lost in the shuffle" status among so many other gigantic 70s hits. We also discuss the marketing decision for the US market to include it on Band On The Run from Capitol A&R man Al Coury. What say you? Should it be on the LP or not.  We'll take a tally and discuss on our next show! Come on UK fans!!! :)   Good to be back!

Episode 221: ”That Was Me” (Dr. Richard Driver)

Hello All! Another Guest Author Interview! This week Tom and Andy were joined by Dr. Richard Driver, Author of the new book That Was Me: Paul McCartney's Career and Legacy Of The Beatles. Richard's book analyses The Beatles' impact culturally in America, and then Paul's trajectory throughout the 60s. The majority of his book is all about Paul Solo (which we all love since so many books are not written that way). We contextualise some of the Beatles impact during the 60s during our discussion which was quite fun. ("Popular Than Jesus"/"Two Virgins"/Drugs etc). Paul and his workaholic lifestyle as a coping mechanism. And of course discussion on Paul/Wings and the like. All fun stuff. Richard is a 2nd generation fan who caught the Macca bug circa the Flaming Pie era. It was a very fun discussion and we really look forward to having Richard on again! It's been a minute but we're back with a new show! Just Tom and Andy this week after a very busy August (Fest, and 3 stellar author interviews) we kept this one light and simple. We're going to do a 3 part show where we pick 15 songs from each era of McCartney's career that we think equal Beatle level compositions. This month we focus on the 1970s. Future episodes will be 80s/90s and 00s/10s. Hope you are all well and thanks for sticking with us! We have plenty lined up for the rest of the year!

Episode 219: ”You Never Give Me Your Money” (Peter Doggett)

We were honoured to have the esteemed author and journalist Mr. Peter Doggett join us for Episode 219! Peter penned the superb book You Never Give Me Your Money: The Beatles After The Breakup (initially subtitled The Battle for the Beatles Soul which was stupidly rejected by the publisher) in 2009. It is the best piece of writing that focuses on the relationships all 4 Beatles had throughout the 70s, 80s and through the time of publishing. It is also the only book to keep the scope of research dialed into one focus: the lawsuits and the specific details of them. Percentages for each Beatle, contracts, Allen Klein - and the disovery of the "McCartney Override" all packed into this show! We thank Peter for his time and if you have not checked this out go get it now: You Never Give Me Your Money https://www.amazon.com/You-Never-Give-Your-Money/dp/0061774189 Peter's website https://www.peterdoggett.org and his most recent book: Growing Up: Sex and the 1960s"
