An honest conversation about race and fashion: Pass the Mic to Henrietta Gallina & Robin Givhan

In the final of three parts, Fashion: No Filter passes the mic to our guest editor Henrietta Gallina as we explore the role of mainstream media in the current climate.  In light of the rallying cry for the fashion industry to put an end to ongoing systemic racism, Henrietta, Camille and Monica have been having some tough and candid conversations about the state of play and how they want to participate and show up in this moment. Their conclusion: Fashion: No Filter would share its platform in order to create meaningful dialogue and help foster understanding, learning and shared experiences in the most authentic way.  In today’s conversation, Henrietta speaks to trailblazing fashion critic Robin Givhan who is a journalist at The Washington Post. Her work won her the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2006 which is incidentally the first time the award was given to a fashion writer. The Pulitzer Committee cited Robin’s “witty, closely observed essays that transform fashion criticism into cultural criticism”.  Henrietta and Robin begin with a birdseye view on the state of the industry today and move on to cover a range of topics. Robin explains why she claims in a recent piece that the fashion system was broken long before the pandemic hit and why it needs a reboot. They also discuss the racial fallout, performative marketing and smoke and mirror optics of advertising and inclusivity, cancel culture vs accountability and the importance of equity and equal representation. Robin who exemplifies the “only one” allegory in many ways, also looks back on her prestigious career and trajectory. As in the previous episode, the interview is followed by reactions and takeaways from your hosts Monica and Camille accompanied by Henrietta followed by a quick recap of the genesis of the project. An honest conversation about race and fashion: Pass the Mic to Henrietta Gallina & Jordan Mitchell

In the second of three parts, Fashion: No Filter passes the mic to our guest editor Henrietta Gallina to discuss the role of PR in the current climate. In today’s conversation, Henrietta speaks to Jordan Mitchell, the Managing Director of talent and brand communications agency LMPR, based in London, who currently represents some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment. Jordan and Henrietta look at the role of PR within the fashion ecosystem, explore the morality behind this often murkier branch of the industry, (given PRs are typically paid to do what brands and clients need and gloss over the mistakes they make), and the need for change within this specific sphere. They also take a closer look at hard-to-spot but extremely prevalent racial micro-aggressions and their potential effects on a black person’s mental health. Like in the previous episode, the interview is followed by reactions and takeaways from your hosts Monica and Camille accompanied by Henrietta.  Want more? An honest conversation about race and fashion: Pass the Mic to Henrietta Gallina, Tamu McPherson & Danielle Prescod

In this first of three parts, Fashion: No Filter passes the mic to guest editor Henrietta Gallina, an advocate, creative director and co-host of the brilliantly candid podcast The Conversations, who shall be leading the discussion throughout the series. In today’s conversation, Henrietta leads a free-flowing chat with digital creator Tamu McPherson, and BET Style Director Danielle Prescod, both of whom also have strong social media followings and influence. The three speak candidly about their experiences as black female creatives in fashion — Tamu having started out as a freelance photographer, and going on to found her blog All the Pretty Birds, and Danielle as an editor at magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and In Style.  While both guests have been outspoken about racism in fashion since the murder of George Floyd, (and before,) this conversation takes many unexpected turns and brings forth new perspectives, interpretations and potential solutions to the industry’s systemic issues going forward. The interview is followed by reactions and takeaways from your hosts Monica, Camille accompanied by Henrietta.  Articles mentioned: https://www.alltheprettybirds.com/luxury-brands-should-work-with-black-content-creators/ Want more? Fashion sans filtre with Loic Prigent

In this episode of Fashion: No Filter, Monica and Camille sit down with French fashion documentarian Loic Prigent, who is known for his innovative insider documentaries, narrated in his famous humouristic tone which dissect the fashion world of today. Prigent's films feature fashion icons Jacquemus, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Jean Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Sonia Rykiel and Chanel -- there are lots more, but that makes for a very long sentence. It seems Prigent was always intended for the unique cross-section where fashion and broadcast journalism collide: his breadth knowledge of the industry and its history is profound, his witticisms are endlessly observant. He has essentially invented his own style of fashion reporting, holding up a colourful mirror to the industry itself, whilst allowing us all to take a step back and chuckle about its absurdities.  How did the young Loic Prigent growing up on the French Atlantic coast begin dreaming of Fashion Shows? And how, for that matter, did he begin getting invited to them, eventually gaining the trust of the most exclusive houses, to the extent that they invitingly open their doors to his camera crews (a rare feat) Tune in to find out how he strikes the balance, what it felt like to sit out a season on account of being quarantined, and to hear his take on some of Paris Fashion Week's most dramatic, silly and controversial happenings * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Defining Danish Style with Pernille Teisbaek

In this episode we travel to Copenhagen Fashion Week with Vestiaire Collective for a live audience with Denmark’s Queen… of style!  Over the past decade Pernille Teisbaek’s name has become synonymous with a specific kind of pared-back, sophisticated Scandinavian chic. But the elusive “Look de Pernille” (as her successful blog founded in 2012 was titled) is not limited to local fame — Pernille’s style has inspired an army of international fans — and copycats. Today her Instagram account (775k followers), a symphony of inspiration for fashion-forward minimalists, is one of the industry’s most admired, yet Pernille’s talents are by no means limited to posing. She still works regularly as a stylist, as co-founder of the influencer marketing and consultancy company Social Zoo and, meanwhile, as a full-time mom of two.  We catch up with Pernille for a candid conversation on work-life balance, how best to reduce once’s environmental fashion footprint, and that certain je ne sais quoi that defines that defines that elusive Danish elegance. Instagram accounts mentioned in this episode: @PernilleTeisbaek  @CecilieThorsmark @CPFW @VestiaireCollective and of course @FashionNoFilter @CamilleCharriere @MonicaAinleyDLV With thanks to this episode’s sponsor, Vestiaire Collective.  * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Alexandre de Betak on the future of the fashion show

Since it’s always fashion week somewhere, the time has come to talk about the fashion show.  If you’ve ever wondered how these unusual events come to life, this episode is for you. Perhaps you’ve stopped in your tracks (or feed scroll) at evidence of a particularly spectacular show or uniquely intricate set. At times these performance aspects can become even more memorable than the fashion itself. Well, chances are a man named Alexandre de Betak with a headphone backstage was calling the shots. De Betak's job is to travel the world year-round dreaming up the most extrordinary sets and parties, catwalks and choreographies. In fact, over the past 25 years, the “Fellini of Fashion” has orchestrated over 1,500 fashion sows from the helm of his international production company Bureau Betak. Not only does the producer come up with each universe to compliment his clients’ collections, he is also known for gaining access to some of the world’s most celebrated and protected landmarks in which to do so. This past summer there was the spectacular pink-carpeted Jacquemus show somewhere in a lavender filed in Provence (that could only be found by following an exact GPS location). Or a show by the same designer at Paris' Picasso Museum a few seasons back, an unprecedented feat that no doubt required a certain amount of arm-twisting among the Paris establishment. Ditto for the Dior mirror box de Betak built in Moscow’s Red Square, the one he constructed in the center of the Louvre, or in the garden of the Rodin Museum… locations most creatives can only dream of taking over. As your hosts sit down with de Betak to discuss his unique and largely self-invented career trajectory, they also ask the show maestro to speculate on where the very concept of the fashion show is going next, on why the bi-annual four-city circuit as we know it should really be rethought, and how to properly integrate sustainability if he can help it. Which, of course, he can.  Instagram accounts you may want to follow after listening to this episode include: @AlexdeBetak @BureauBetal @BureauFutur @Dior @YSL @Jacquemus @MuseePicasso  and of course, @MonicaAinleydlv @CamilleCharriere @FashionNoFilter. * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Joining the circular economy with Vestiaire Collective

As Vestiaire Collective celebrates its 10th anniversary, bolstered by news that the resell industry is now growing 1.5 times faster than the fast-fashion industry, Monica and Camille sit down with the founders of the luxury second-hand website to unpack the workings of the booming circular economy. Back when Vestiaire entered the market, second hand shopping was very much a hit-and-miss affair: only the more persistent vintage shoppers were likely to strike gold. But Vestiaire Collective was to change that by building an inspirational community-led platform were fashion lovers and savvy shoppers can find anything from Isabel Marant’s popular Dicker boots (Camille’s first purchase on the site) to Hermes and Chanel's most covetable handbags.  From their early days as entrepreneurs to working their way to the top of the eco-comm chain, Fanny Moisant and Sophie Hersan reveal some of the biggest challenges faced (like having to change your brand’s name) and explain why we should all be jumping on the circular economy bandwagon. They also talk FNF through vintage trends and how the resell industry is even influencing the first sale industry the days.  Please check out: https://www.vestiairecollective.com https://www.vestiairecollective.com/ And follow: @VestiaireCollective, @FannyMoisant and @SophieHersan Our various shoutouts during the intro included: A website to repair all your favourite bags and shoes:  https://the-restory.com https://the-restory.com/ Joan Didion’s packing list:  https://www.vogue.com/article/joan-didion-the-white-album-packing-list  Capsule wordrobe essentials:  Black suit: @AdmiseParis / @RaeyOfficial Boots: @Byfar // @ThisisAeyde // @Prada Jeans: @Goldsigndenim // @HelmutLang  Shirts: @Whitnothingunderneath // @PieceofWhite // @RalphLauren // @Cosstores  T-shirts: @CurrentElliot Turtlenecks: @francesdeLourdes Bodysuits: @Prism_london Jewellery: @Aligheri // @AnissaKemriche (call us biased !) Reconstructing sexy with Mugler's creative director, Casey Cadwallader

In this episode of Fashion: No Filter your hosts get a studio visit from Mugler’s brilliant new Creative Director Casey Cadwallader.  After a topical chat on whether politics merits a place in the fashion world (or perhaps, whether fashion has the right to take a political stance), Casey tells Monica and Camille about his recent actions — including diverse casting, dressing Cardi B, and creating that exceptionally constructed “naked-suit” for Bella Hadid — which of course speak louder than words. Casey also takes the girls on a trip down memory lane, explaining his journey from 12-year-old goldsmith in New Hampshire, to architect, to Creative Director of a major Parisian fashion house, before addressing the joys of body-conscious dressing, and why choosing to look sexy can indeed go hand-in-hand with modern feminism. Tune in for an inspiring young designer’s journey, a hilarious first-hand account of Beyonce’s sartorial needs, and, of course, if you want to know, the secrets to constructing derriere-hoisting hosiery.  Instagram accounts mentioned in this episode include: @Cadwallader @nicolasghesquiere @muglerofficial and of course @Camillecharriere @monicaainleydlv @fashionnofilter. * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Streetsyle is dead! Long live streetsyle

Monica and Camille, having been obliged to divide and conquer at the shows this season, send each other their impressions of SS20. The good, the bad and the ugly, it’s all there as they recount their favourite  bits. They then sit down with friend-of-the pod, Tommy Ton, to talk about his career shooting fashion’s best-dressed and his recent foray into dressing those very women, since he is now at the helm of ready-to-wear label Deveaux. The two Canadians bond over how to make it big in the industry when you grew up in the Great North, and the three tackle the burning questions on everyone’s lip at the moment: is streetstyle still for real? The debate covers street style’s current and kk standing fashion tribes(poke David Attenborough), how Tommy started out, and why he was in fact the ideal candidate to launch a RTW label for women.  ARTICLES INCLUDED IN OUR FASHION MONTH ROUND-UP J-LO breaks the internet (again) with that green dress  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTyBFcEgc-A The BOF499 scandal https://fashionista.com/2019/10/kerby-jean-raymond-bof-500-gala-controversy A catwalk crasher at the Chanel show https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/10/01/catwalk-prankster-crashes-chanel-paris-show-face-off-miffed/ Delfina Deltrez Tourbillon presentation  https://www.instagram.com/p/B3B8gyZIA_Z/?igshid=1576jh1e815v5 Scott Schuman’s pic of the VOGUETTES paying homage to real French style https://www.instagram.com/p/B3Em7KZljTh/?igshid=  Email fashionnofilter@gmail.com or reach us on Instagram @fashionnofilter, @MonicaAinleyDLV and @Camille Charriere * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Sustainability but make it fashion with Arizona Muse

Brexit getting you down? Fear not, it’s Fashion Week!  But wait.. lest you forget, fashion is the second most polluting industry on the planet. Bummer. Makes a week of shows, parties, and sartorial reportage slightly more difficult to enjoy. But fear not Fashion No Filterites. Your hosts are determined not to let the world coming to the end completely kill the magic, whilst addressing head-on the shiny pink elephant on the catwalk. Enter the world’s most fashionable activist: the brilliant and beautiful Arizona Muse. In this episode, Arizona, Monica and Camille discuss the practical ways in which we can all make a difference in our daily (and fashionable) lives… so we might continue to enjoy getting dressed in the morning without that niggling guilty voice in our heads. As Arizona puts it, the key is to educate yourself so as to cast the correct vote with your wallet. Clara Cornet on bringing back bricks and mortar in the digital age

In this episode, Monica and Camille head to Paris’ most famous shopping street to meet Clara Cornet, the creative and buying director for the new Galeries Lafayettes at 60 avenue des Champs Élysée. Clara cut her teeth as a buyer at Opening Ceremony in New York before taking over the new space that has been transformed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels to lure big-spending tourists and trendy Parisians back to the tree-lined avenue. She is responsible for the store’s unique, often exclusive selection of brands and products as well as its intensely modern visual identity and digital content.  Clara is well-known in the industry for her confient eye, her knack for spotting and nurturing young designers and her ability to always be ahead of the game in an industry forever in search of something new. For example, she was among the first to work with Jacquemus. Now longtime pals, Clara and Simon Porte (Jacquemus) have teamed up again to create Citron, the shop’s foodie destination, a restaurant and cafe boasting Southern French flavours and ingredients that has fast become one of the most Instagrammable destinations in the capital. Your hosts sit down with Clara to discuss how she climbed the fashion ladder to end up in such a coveted role by the age of thirty, what it really takes to be a great buyer, and the highs and lows of opening a physical experience-led concept store in the age of e-comm.  Email fashionnofilter@gmail.com or reach us on Instagram @fashionnofilter. * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Dressed for radio: a live conversation on female empowerment and the art of power with Tallulah Harlech

In this very first installation of our #dressedforradio live series, in partnership with Escada, your hosts sit down to tackle the gargantuan topic of female empowerment and the art of power dressing. Speaking to the very talented and wonderfully outspoken stylist and fashion consultant, Tallulah Harlech, they discuss everything to do with the transformative nature of clothes: can an outfit really change your mood or land you that dream job ? Is it sexist to dissect and comment on the outfits of our female politicians? Does one have to dress like one of the boys to be heard in the boardroom?  Plus, Tallulah explains what its really like growing up under the watch of the formidable Amanda Harlech, who was a true muse to John Galliano and the late Karl Lagerfeld, and has repeatedly been voted one of the best dressed women in the world, how sportswear is the answer to all your styling woes and why it’s so important to get away from this dated notion that as women, it is in any way denigrating to talk (or care) about what we wear. To finish: some practical tips on how to style a power suit and a Q&A from the audience.  Follow Tallulah on instagram: @Realtallulahharlech Email fashionnofilter@gmail.com or reach us on Instagram @fashionnofilter. Francisco Costa on 13 years at Calvin Klein and his brand new beauty venture

Fashion No: Filter takes you into the heart of the New York Fashion scene for the third and final episode from its New York Trilogy. This time, Monica and Camille make a visit to the home of Brazilian creative director Francisco Costa. Best known for his 13-year tenure as Women’s Creative Director of Calvin Klein, Costa twice won the coveted CFDA Designer of the Year Award during this time— the highest honour for a fashion designer in America.  Today, Costa is reflective on his journey from a childhood growing up in Brazil, inspired by his designer and community-organised mother, to Manhattan in the 90s, where he taught himself English before attending FIT and being hired to design for Oscar de La Renta and Gucci under Tom Ford.  Uniquely open, fun, and generous in spirit, Costa lets your hosts in on his true feelings about the state of big fashion business today, and takes them on a mental trip to the Amazon, where, after leaving Calvin Klein, he found his new source of inspiration.  His latest venture, Costa Brazil, is not only sustainable but sources its ingredients from the depths of the Amazon rainforest. And as Monica and Camille learn, Costa’s scents and luxurious oils, like all his creative endeavours (and storytelling!) transport you to another world…. Cate Holstein, founder of Khaite, on how to stand out when you design quiet clothes

In this week’s instalment of Fashion: No filter, your hosts Camille and Monica are still parked stateside for the resort shows and continue their exploration of the NY design scene. Enter Cate Holstein, founder of Khaite, one of the most talked about emerging brands in the industry today, that launched in the Fall of 2016 — and is incidentally up for the 2019 CFDAs fashion awards emerging designer of the year on June 3rd.  The girls sit down with Cate to talk to her about what made her want to launch a label of carefully curated basics — or as she likes to call them “cherished pieces” in the era of loud digital statements and an oversaturated market. They cover everything from her first stab at design for her namesake label (that closed shortly after the 2008 recession hit the US), to cutting her teeth as a designer on the high street at GAP and in the luxury market for Vera Wang, to what made her come full circle and back to designing her own thing, only this time focusing her aesthetic on a quiet collection of timeless classics — a spot that has been highly coveted since the departure of Phoebe Philo at @OldCéline. Secrets from celebrity stylist Kate Young (+ bonus MET Ball rap!)

Celebrities. They just know how to look fabulous for every occasion, right? Well, no. Turns out, there is a fashion mastermind behind most red carpet moments these days, and none is more revered than Kate Young. As go-to stylist for the stars, Kate has put (and kept) names like Margot Robbie, Selina Gomez, Sienna Miller and Rachel Weisz on the fashion map. Oscars? Cannes? MET Gala? Publicity tours? You name it, she’s orchestrated the look for it!  Fashion No Filter flew to New York on the eve of The MET Ball — fashion’s biggest red carpet extravaganza — to catch up with Kate and find out what her job really entails.  Tune in for an unfiltered discussion on the current climate in fashion, what its really like working for Anna Wintour (Kate started her career at Vogue US where she went from being Anna’s assistant to holding the Sittings Editor position for many years before turning her attention to full time celebrity styling), the scoop on how fashion icons, and their iconic looks are made — from fittings to fiascos — not to mention some pretty real chat about what it means to be a feminist today.  And, stay for a bonus review of The MET Gala’s weirdest and most wonderful looks in the form of a rap (!) by beat poet/fashion publicist Sophie Roche Conti.  Email fashionnofilter@gmail.com or reach us on Instagram @fashionnofilter, @camillecharriere, @monicaainley.  * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Alexandra van Houtte on founding fashion’s first search engine

Monica and Camille get a studio visit from friend-of-the-pod Alexandra van Houtte, founder and CEO of tag-walk.com http://tag-walk.com/, fashion’s first online search engine. At 29 Alexandra is already a key figure in the fashion tech landscape, having dreamt up the idea of a keyword search database for stylists and journalists in need of a reference centre for runway pieces, new designers and trends. Alexandra had the idea while working as a frustrated stylist at Paris fashion glossies, identifying a missing tool while planning shoots for editors late into the night.  When she launched Tagwalk three years ago from her sofa, investors turned her down and the press was slow to catch on to the concept. Today, Alexandra is on Vanity Fair’s list of the world’s 50 most influential French people. How did she ascend to fashion greatness in such a short period of time? Who are the mentors that kept her focused on the big picture? How did she learn to be a good boss? Tune in for all this and a couple good chuckles!  The accounts mentioned in today’s episode are as follows: @Alexandravanhoutte @Tagwalk @Sophiefontanel @wearmarcia @alighieri_jewellery @indg0 @nasa @somewhereiwouldliketolive @oldmagnet @parisnightkisses @parisiensinparis * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Lucy Yeomans on the enduring power of print

In this episode, Camille and Monica take you inside the gilded offices of Fashion’s e-commerce giant, Net-a-Porter, for an interview with the woman who has solidified Net as an editorial authority too.  After editing UK Harper’s Bazaar for 14 years, Lucy Yeomans has been editor-in-chief of Porter magazine since its launch in February 2014 — a time when most publications were moving from print to digital. After coming up with the idea of Porter with her friend Natalie Massenet, Lucy expertly spearheaded Net’s move against the tide, successfully founding a highly relevant fashion glossy that has exceeded all circulation expectations. Assembling an impressive masthead of fashion media heavyweights, she infused Porter with her unique perspective, creating a magazine that is one hundred percent on women's side. Your hosts catch up with Lucy on the state of the print world today, her impressive career path and get her wisdom how to responsibly helm a magazine for woman in the post me-too era.  For those who want to check out people and accounts discussed in this episode, here’s a little recap: Porter Magazine coverstars: @Gisele, @BellaHadid, @MargotRobbie Supermodel: @The_real_Iman  Photographers: @peterbeardart, @mirella_ricciardi, @Mario_Sorrenti Eco warriors: @Parley.TV  Stylist: @moppy_pilcher (Morgan Pilcher) Email fashionnofilter@gmail.com or reach us on Instagram @fashionnofilter. * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Vanessa Friedman on Accountability in the Fashion Industry

This week New York Times fashion director and chief fashion critic Vanessa Friedman talks to your hosts about her month-long probe into the sexual misconduct allegations against photographers Marion Testin and Bruce Weber.  In January this year, dozens of men stated that Mario Testino and Bruce Weber had secually exploited them on set. Next, similar allegations were levelled against Patrick Demarchelier. The domino effect commenced: within just a few months, a handful of fashion's most powerful photographers had been dethroned, denounced and accused of exploiting their immense power. Yet the backlash was muted, and a wider, mainstream ripple was basically nonexistent. The men weren't publicly slated in the way that various Hollywood figures had been, and most publications chose to quietly phase them out as opposed to issuing public statements. Monica and Camille talk to Vanessa Friedman about the importance of real accountability in the fashion industry and why there is still a way to go despite the #metoo awakening. They also ask her about what it takes to be an objective and fair arbitrator in the creative field, the importance of critical feedback for all and the new role social media has started to play in this field.  Articles mentioned: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/03/style/sexual-harassment-in-fashion.html Email: fashionnofilter@gmail.com or reach us on Instagram @fashionnofilter  * Seeacast.com/privacy https://acast.com/privacyfor privacy and opt-out information.

Why social media is ruining your life with Katherine Ormerod

In this week’s episode of Fashion: No Filter, your hosts catch up with their longtime friend, the journalist, consultant and influencer Katherine Ormerod to discuss her newly published book: Why Social Media is Ruining Your Life.  Already a critical success, Katherine’s books is a no-holds-barred, no-filter look at what social media is doing to us as a society, and how we can deconstruct the online fantasy to change our own attitudes about modern womanhood. It tackles head-on the pressure we feel daily through our time spent on social media. Thoroughly researched with a personal experience-led narrative, the book paints an alarming picture of the realities of modern life dominated by social media addiction. But it’s not all bad news; Katherine transforms our relationship with Instagram into a lesson in how to allow it to help, rather than hinder one’s career, relationships and general life.  Monica and Camille open up to Katherine about their own digital dilemmas, from how long they spend online, to finding work-Instagram balance and “comparititis”.
